Mitch Made a Selfish Hire

Was talking to a buddy about this and something interesting came up out of that conversation.

Mitch Made a Selfish Hire.

He was so anti-Cal and wanted him gone because he couldn't control him. He clearly never wanted Cal here, it was Mike Pratt who made that move and push from what I remember.

He made a hire that would fit who Mitch is and a yes man to Mitch. He wanted an anti-Cal, he did not want an alpha coach. Thus why he never went after Oats or Pearl. However, he did supposedly go after Hurley at the time, but he turned us down.

Another reason why he went for Scott Drew. (Other than they are friends).

Also at the time we did need someone who loved the Program and needed to rally the fan based again. Pope's press conference did just that. Simply, because Pope is one of us, does not mean he can automatically become a great coach or change the way he coaches.

It seemed like Pope was a safe hire and he did not want to deal with another Cal type personality. I think Mitch hired Pope because of that, in some reason to rally the fanbase at the time.

If Mitch cared about the basketball program, he would have done anything he could to get the best coach available at the time. Even if he had an "alpha" personality like Cal. If Dan Hurley said no. Go after Nate Oats. Make him say no. Go after Billy Donovan. Go after Bruce Pearl. Go after someone who has PROVEN they can reach at least a final four. This is Kentucky Basketball. You go after the best of the best. Mitch did NOT want that. If he did, his actions would have done that. Instead, he made the hire for himself, not the program.

Scott Drew was a balance of both, had the yes man personality that Mitch wanted and also won a title. Would he be good here? Perhaps. My vibe was he would be Tubby 2.0 that can recruit better.

Just thoughts.

I think this is a valid point. In the Cal/Mitch relationship, Cal was the boss. And Mitch likely had no role in the basketball program at all. In the current situation, of the two, Pope is probably the yes man. After all, he understands the assignment.

How many threads do we need about this? Your points are valid.
A few more lol.

I do hope all of this is just reactionary for the time (right now) and we all eat crow, because we all want KY to win. Just creating different avenues for the conversation.

It was about striking out on his golden boy Scott Drew (lol) and needing to get someone hired ASAP before the story broke about the rapist swim coach he had hired. Period.

Mitch is a disease to UK athletics and has done irreperable damage to the basketball program.

I think so too. However, one can understand the assignment, but doesn't mean you can perform the assignment.

it shows a lack of seriousness on uk's part all the way up.

a legitimate coach (Sampson, Oats, Hurley) would immediately see Mitch as the clown he is, and treat him with zero respect (like Cal did).

as a result you end up with coach mark pope, who Mitch can keep under his thumb, but he is a coach that top-tier players could not possibly respect.

Barney does not like the run of the mill fan. He’s a total beta who wants to bring all of our programs to his level. Meanwhile under his watch there was a coach who allegedly raped a player and allegedly Barney was notified he had a sex predator for a swim coach. The man still has a job after that. Big time things wrong at UK.

That's why I was never on the "Fire Cal" wagon. It was never that I was happy with Cal over his past few years, I just never trusted Mitch to make the correct hire. I don't know if there was any truth to it, but I heard that Shaka Smart was also considered.

I believe your post is spot on, but I’ll add something that I also believed played a major factor, and this is not to give Brainfart a partial excuse by any means, but I also believe that he knew time would be of the essence for the new coach to field a competitive team, since the portal was already up and going, which unfortunately took Donovan out of contention, so he took a career gamble on Pope, and here we are now.

Had it been the previous era, and not the NIL/ portal era, I don’t think Pope would have ever been seriously considered. Just my opinion…

If it wasn't for Mitch... we coulda had Bruce Pearl.

He is PERFECT for UK.
I think last year at the time was to go after, Dan Hurley (we did), Bruce Pearl, Nate Oats. You do everything you can to land 1 of those 3. All have final four experience.
