Because atlanta was our natural city that year. This year the MW is in Cleveland and the South in Houston.

In 2012, since the actual distance (mileage) between the South (atlanta) and Midwest (st louis) wasn't that big of a deal (382 vs 337) in the eyes of the committee, they said that the SOUTH was our "natural" region, so they preferred to put us there that year. They addressed that, as I recall.
They actually said they thought the distance in mileage was negligible and that the natural region for UK was the South.
It didn't surprise me, but seeing as how fans in western KY would have been much closer, and that we would've brought a TON of BBN there to St. Louis (really just the same as we did to Atlanta), and that Ky and Mo. shares a common border ... it was still weird to me. In the end, I just chalked it up as another way for them to screw around with us, as they had a semi-plausible line of BS they could shoot out there to justify doing what they did to UK.
Just know that whenever they can do something to screw around with UK, they will take every opportunity to do so. Especially when they can justify anything with a semi-plausible line of BS.
God how I hate the committee and the NCAA.
