Real talk, if he's going to mail it in the rest of the year and then transfer Pike needs to bench him for the remainder of the season like Kiss.

gives the same +\- as Duke but plays 20c the minutes. Put in Reiber for Mathis minutes that don’t go to Jacob Young

I noticed when he cut in the half court offense, it was jogging and not cutting to get open. I want to look to see if the other guys do the same. Bring the energy, Montez!

Lou just hates Mathis. Been on him since freshman year. Give it a rest dude.
BS I have been on him since freshman year. But every since the early season - he’s not defending, he’s the worst on the fast break. He’s not even shooting threes which he has been better at. In short he’s useless

I like everything about this thread. He always drives into traffic and never looks to pass. Constantly gets blocked and then lays on the ground looking for a foul while the other team runs a 5v4 the other way. I'd rather him shoot 3s at this point, at least early in the season he was making those. He really should be o

Honestly - if he'd learn to pass the ball; he'd be effective. He gets to the rim in traffic really well but he gets tunnel vision. One of the assistant coaches needs to sit with him one on one in film and just bludgeon him with the fact that he has to look for an open man when two defenders are in his face. Someone has to be open. I'd make it like A Clock Work Orange with him and brainwash him to pass.

Mathis is far from the problem 0 turnovers and 0-3 from the floor 1-2 from the line playing only 15 minutes with the bottom of the rotation mostly.

Was playing way better earlier in the year playing with young Harper Myles and Paul

Mathis is in a tough spot we need to give him a break. He gave us a lot of good games over the years and now has to take a back seat. That being said I have no problem with him going to the rim but needs to make a couple. I think mentally pulling him from the starting lineup has messed with him. Also as sojo said he is playing playing with better players would make him better.

I would rather Mathis go to the rim and get a layup or get fouled than Ron/Caleb/geo wuss out for a pull up and leave it short.

he is doing the same thing..driving straight in a line to the basket putting up a shot with 2 guys on him and falling to the floor sprawled, it is his patented move and its happening once or twice a game, cannot have any trust with him at this point. The 2nd one tonight was an obvious pass situation if not both of them

We have no idea where Mag is in development. I’m sure if he were ready he’d get playing time. JY should get an extra 8 minutes or so.

I’d like to see us run some full court pressure sets with the second team if we’re going to continue full on substitution patterns. That could be a way to get Mathis going and throw off the opponents offensive flow. He and JY would be solid on the trap and maybe that could kick start our transition game back into form for the tourney.

I can’t understand how anyone is advocating for him to see more PT right now in the halfcourt sets though. The issue is the opposite. If he can’t give 15 solid minutes, others have to absorb that time. We’re left with one sub for 4 positions (and as it is, Caleb is the only one who can fill in for RHJ at the 4 without a massive drop off unless the opponent has no size).

No I wouldn't because most of the times they never call a foul and when they do he CAN'T shoot foul shots so its like a turnover either way

Unofrtunately as I said during the game with no OOC schedule and the fact that he was hurt we just can't put Mag in there at this time. Maybe for a 2 minute spell but definitely no more than that

I was going to post the same as OP. Montez has had his shot since being benched and is not contributing - it is time to give his minutes to Mag or Palmquist.
