That will be like Caswell County (Barlett Yancey) and Person County (Person) ... wonder how many other counties will have just one public high school.
How many private /charter schools are in Montgomery?

There are quite a few counties with just one school. I did a quick count and came up with 29. I did not count Lee County High, Orange County High or Rockingham County High, as they are not the sole high schools in their county.

I likely missed a few. Some can hide. Like Smoky Mountain High being the only Jackson County High School.

There is no charter or private high school in Montgomery County. Will be just one high school

Combining East Montgomery and West Montgomery's #s will bring about 3A #s. So, why the heck can't the NCHSAA put them in a 3A league? Just move a few teams to the Rocky River 2A, like Salisbury and South Rowan. And, didn't Monroe and Parkwood want to drop to 2A?

And Uwharrie Charter doesn’t have football yet. So not so much as far as football is concerned

That’s what I was thinking.

Monroe and Parkwood were both denied in their attempt to move down to 2A

Man that’s a great idea. after first 10 days of school, use the ADM’s and 25% it all four classes for all sports

You would want to include the non football playing schools in the 25%?

As far as I can tell, the following counties have one traditional public high school: Alexander, Alleghany, Anson, Ashe, Avery, Bertie, Camden, Caswell, Chowan, Clay, Currituck, Davie, Gates, Graham, Greene, Hertford, Hoke, Jackson, Jones, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Montgomery (coming soon), Northampton, Pamlico, Perquimans, Person, Polk, Richmond, Scotland, Swain (Cherokee is in there but not through the county school system), Tyrrell, Vance (as of this year), Warren, Washington (as of this year), Watauga, Yancey

If I counted correctly, that's 38 out of 100....and this does not include charter schools....also worth mentioning that Hyde is not on this list as it has Mattamuskeet and Ocracoke....but if you combine those two together, it would still easily be a very small 1A.....for what it's worth though, Ocracoke is so small they are not even able to field a girls basketball team this year....Mattamuskeet was the smallest football playing school in the state this year since Creswell & Plymouth consolidated into Washington Co. HS

Should we assume they will be in the Rocky River Conference? In a related story, are we expecting CATA to have varsity football next year?

Montgomery Central has the potential to have a very good football program if they can get all the community to get behind the team I've read these blogs for years and West and East Montgomery fans have really give each other a hard time but I believe they will all get behind there program you have to have passionate fans to win ,good luck to the new Montgomery Central high school..

Can someone tell me what the playoff rules are going to be for the new school? Heard that the NCHSAA is making some special rules for them since they are in a 2A league with 3A numbers.

I would suggest that, if they play in a 2A conference, have at least a .500 record, and finish in the top three, they should then be placed accordingly in the 3A playoffs. Frankly, they should have done the same with North Davidson.
But I recognize that this is the NCHSAA. That would make too much sense.

Why not treat Montgomery Central the way Murphy was in the 1991 alignment period? One of the two years you are playoff eligible. Pick it. Actually, I do not feel that is fair. If they finish in the top three in their conference place them as the very last third place finisher in the 3A playoffs. That will knock a 3A team out of the playoffs but when 64 qualify I do not have much sympathy for that 65th squad.

There are several schools over the years that have had 3A numbers playing in 2A conferences West Stanly was one for years till the last realignment Piedmont am Parkwood had 3A numbers playing 2A a couple years ago they put all the Cabarrus County schools in one 3A conference an 4 of them had 4A numbers the Rocky River conference will be good for Montgomery Central as Montgomery Central will be good for the Rocky River it’s a good fit travel times aren’t bad as Montgomery County touches Stanly an anson county’s an Mt Pleasant (Cabarrus) is only 6 miles out side of Stanly an Forest Hills an Cata (Union) are only 16 miles south of stanly an 15 miles west of Anson I think Montgomery Central has the potential to be very good in all sports an will make the Rocky River a stronger conference with Mt Pleasant, Forest Hills, Anson, West Stanly, an Montgomery Central

Montgomery Central will be 2A for the next two school years. They will be a 3A school in the next alignment.

West Stanly was 945 in 2007 and continued to drop. Less than 890 2011 and on. Had smaller enrollment than Cuthbertson, Piedmont, Forest Hills, and about the same as Monroe most of the years.

The enrollments are not based on the current school year but what the ADM was when the alignment process numbers were used to determine the new classifications.

Good point btango. But North Davidson was 3A size when the current realignment went into effect, and Montgomery Central didn’t exist. As in most decisions, the NCHSAA just makes it up as they go.

My comment on the ADMs that are used was in reply to the Weststanly1 post. There are always going to be schools that gain or lose ADM with no change of lines or schools opened.

There is a process they use for mid alignment placement and new schools opening during the alignment. MC being allowed to play sports before the school is open is not a new thing. There is a precendence with the first one comes to mind is Polk County in the late 1980's or early 1990's.

School systems provideda forecasted number for their schools when a change of districts is planned that would change ADMs. North Davidson and Ledford numbers that were provided would have placed them in 2A but they did not play out. I am not sure of the particulars but the numbers used were from Davidson County. The school systems play a lot in the determination of ADM with Early College being an example. Saw it happen in reverse with Mount Pleasant and Central Cabarrus.

I strongly believe that the NCHSAA should go to realignment every two years instead of every four. Most states I know of already do this. It would help eliminate a lot of the disparity in enrollments.

I would like two years, also. Surprisingly, a lot of schools do not like it. If they subdivide all team sports it is not as big an issue although there will still be the schools that shrunk or grow their enrollment out of the classification.

Oh please, no subdivisions in the other team sports.

I believe the need to realign conferences would be problematic if it were done every two years. The issues I’ve seen are mostly when new schools are built, and the ripple effects of that.

I am 100% against it!!!! With that said, it is drawing support from the schools. Look for this to go before the board at the May meetings.

If they subdivide, I will no longer attend the state championships in non football sports unless I have someone participating that I am connected to. I have been to the basketball title games nearly every year for 28 years.

So it's getting support from the schools. Ugh. If implemented, it would further water down the playoffs. They should just go to five classifications and no subdividing, including football.

The NCHSAA does not want it but they will implement it if the schools / sports have the numbers.

I wish there was a poll of every football coach regarding subdividing. Guarantee you they would vote overwhelmingly to keep subdividing.

About four years ago the NCHSAA admin offered options for the classifications and explained some of the positives and negatives. When five classifications was discussed the first question asked, “will football still subdivide.” Believe me, if they go to give classifications there will be a major push by the schools / coaches for ten champions.

That would be a bummer.
