I did say one of the worst and not the worst. At least that 99 team was 9-0 at one point, despite having a mediocre offense, and did beat teams like Arizona, Miami and OSU, and TA&M in a bowl game; that team actually may have overachieved up to the Minny game because it was limited offensively.

I think that we all know that if they hadn’t lost that Minny game, they most likely would’ve finished 12-0 and played for the NC.
That Ohio State team in 99 wasn’t very good though. They were 6-6 and finished the season unranked.

So when exactly IS the right time to part ways? After the portal closes? Before spring ball starts? Never?
Good question. With the new portal rules and signing day in December, it’s not an easy answer. I think it would be in PSU’s best interest to have a coach announcement by the end of the season or very shortly after, which eliminates any coach that has their team in the playoffs. If you the guy you want makes a deep run, you miss the signing day for the whole 2026 class, right? It seems kindof complicated to navigate which makes me think they aren’t getting someone who has their team in the playoff.

That’s true, but it appeared that after the Oregon game, he mentally checked out as well as the team. It just was time both for him and the program to move in different directions.

You could almost sense that this program was becoming stagnant under his continued leadership. I mean, the 2026 recruiting class was good but not special despite what we did last season, and he was losing a lot of recruiting battles to schools like ND. Also, while the 2027 recruiting class was really good on paper so far, we all know that that probably was going to change over the next fourteen months, and probably not for the better.
Stagnant? Absolutely. Coming off a near-Natty appearance and having one of the early 2027 elite recruiting classes lined up (as everyone adjusts to the NIL era), while we push forward with huge facility improvements ... stagnant.

The only legitimate criticism is the squad folding over the last 2 games. So, it's a decade plus of successful program resurrection v. 2 horrific games.

But they didn’t. They folded like this years team.

We still lost to the three best teams that we played last season. Why argue over semantics? I think that you know what I mean. If Franklin had stayed, he would be 1-11 against OSU and he was off to a great 0-2 start against Oregon. That’s what I mean about stagnant.

Yes, I know that OSU wasn’t good in 99, but it still was OSU; under Cooper they always had a lot of good players. In that season they had Bellisario at qb, who wasn’t at a typical OSU qb level.

I rember LaVar almost decapitating that QB. Ohio St was uncharacteristically bad that year. Arizona ended up faltering to 6-6 also and was unranked by week 5.

I think that the 97 team was better than the 99 team. That 99 team was fortunate in some respects to be 9-0 because they really weren’t dominant on offense. I mean, Kevin Thompson was the qb of that team. The Minny result always was right around the corner for that team. Despite that Minny game, they did have a 10 point lead against Michigan with about 7 minutes to go before Brady did his magic, so they didn’t completely fold like this year’s team did.

Well, giving up a 10 point lead at home when you still have a shot at the big picture seemed to be folding. The 97 team was the reverse. The defense was the liability. They got shellacked at home by Michigan then ended the season by getting absolutely dismantled by the Sparty run game. That game was painful. They couldn’t stop the run at all.

Not worried. New coaches bring their own players. Plus the portal will fill holes. Much less of a concern than this used to be. Kraft just needs to make the right hire.
