I see Pope gracefully stepping away after this year before we can fire him. Something isn't right. Can't lure any big time recruit or portal prospect (unless they need a place to rehab) despite allegedly having tons of NIL deals to throw at them. Falling behind in way too many nationally televised games. Overpaid players throwing hissy fits and rolling their eyes. He sounds completely defeated, like a coach that knows his players don't respect him. I hate to say it, but there's only one constant (we'll, two if you count our awful athletic director).

ATP I'm struggling to see how we win any of the marquee non-conference games. And when we roll into Fayetteville and get the brakes beat off of us by a mid Razorbacks team, that will be the point of no return.

I so wanted this to turn out different, but I'm now resigned to the fact that it just isn't going to.
Well then you’re gonna be disappointed because barring a calamity he’s gonna get 3 seasons here lol

Yes and the story isn’t over. For all we know, there was a meeting today that put out the drama fires and they watch film and figure out something that improves the defense. Really, we all hope.

Yeah there was absolutely no effort at all. That was the disheartening part. I can't remember many games over the years where the guys just laid down from the start.

I hate to say it but that falls squarely on the coach. If there are guys causing issues/tuning him out then Pope needs to sit them or let them leave. Allowing that will spread to the guys who are trying and make Pope look like a cuck.
I agree it's on Pope.

He does these constant revolving door substitutions. So even when they get sat, they go back in 5 minutes later. I think he is going to have to make guys sit an entire game or more to get the message.

But yeah, if we're in year 2 and guys won't play hard for him, he's got major problems.

Matt Jones said that on radio last night. I agree. Tried to fix defense and now we don’t have enough offense AND the defense stinks
I'm with you here. I think the defense CAN be really good.

I think last year's guys were physically limited. These guys have been limited by effort.

But man, the offense fell off a cliff from last year to this year.

That’s my point. How is a coach supposed to fix that? You keep making this about you. This is about players who clearly have nothing invested in the Cats.

In your zeal to make yourself feel better I guess you have to blame something. Trashing a coach seems to be the simple way out. They can always get another one. No blood no foul right?
How are coaches at other programs able to manage this stuff? Why is it different for Kentucky? Perhaps, dare I say, it may indeed be the coach?

Yes but if Pope sits down some guys or let's one go it sure doesn't do much for their reputation and professional chances. Getting labeled as a cancer doesn't help your draft status or getting signed overseas.

Just ask Sanders about his NFL draft night experience. The NBA only has 2 rounds so Pope has leverage that he can use to affect their future at the next level.
Sander's coach didn't submarine him. He did that to himself. Sure didn't seem to hurt Sharpe. You might remember this guy. Dennis Rodman.

I can assure you of this, a coach that intentionally blackballs a player has seen the end of any recruiting he will ever do.

Brother, it’s like every post I have you reply with something inflammatory to it. By this point, there’s no secret. We all know who I am as a poster. I’m an analytical guy who is very critical about in-game stuff. I have a very specific view about what wins in CBB. You don’t have to read the posts if you know you’re gonna just effectively tell me to shut up or control my speech. I have just as much a right to be here as you
Inflammatory? I just complemented you on your comedy.

I would never try to control or limit your speech. I might point how ineffective your approach has been over the last couple of decades.

If a guy is being disruptive or being a cancer then sitting him or removing him from the team isn't submarining a player. Its actually doing what's best for the team and program.

A coach doesn't have to say anything to outside sources. Disciplining a player for just cause brings enough attention.

Yes Sanders dad didn't torpedo him lol. That's quite a metric there.

Yes, I agree but that is quite different than the post I was addressing. A coach may very well choose to address player issues in the context of the team. This is a far cry from threatening to brand a player a troublemaker such that it affects his marketability. Also, the player can just grin and shrug. Take his million and switch teams the next year for more money.

Pope has a big stick he can use to his benefit and he should use it. If everything is about $ now then that is what will get their attention.

Obviously only for legit reasons but great coaches use all their leverage.

How does that even enter the discussion? This is NIL we’re talking about here. They are not paid to play basketball. How is a coach supposed to challenge a player with that?

You might have a better argument with revenue sharing. I don’t think we’ve seen that in practice yet. Even that I am skeptical as that was born in the courts. Compensation is more likely to be tied to practice attendance than production on the court.

Im not talking about that. Im saying benching guys for legitimate poor conduct and effort has a direct impact to them getting to the next level . Players understand that.

Im pretty sure they would also have a conduct clause in any agreement. If guys are being detrimental to the team through poor behavior they need to be dealt with accordingly . Im not buying into any of the rumors until their confirmed but something is going on behind the scenes.

Players cannot be allowed to hold a coach hostage . You dont think Pitino would sit them down or tell them to transfer.

Again, I’m not disagreeing but just who do you think that contact is with? It sure as heck is not with the university.

Pitinos words would be hollow now. They are going to transfer regardless. Portal…….

NIL and the Portal really complicate this.

I've only walked out of a UK game at halftime or just after twice in my life and I'm 47 years old:

1 - When Zion/RJ/Reddish embarrassed UK in Indy. Left at halftime, down 20, I think. It was pitiful.
2 - The game against Sparty the other night. It was hopeless after the first media timeout of the 2H. We left.

Hard to do that after spending money on tickets, but it was an opportunity to go grab a meal and walk around the city I used to live in and love. Kentucky basketball didn't deserve my time or attention that night.

I'm very, very concerned. Mark Pope looks utterly clueless as to what to do with this roster. Clueless.

Understandable frustration. Still plenty of time to fix it, it’s early.

I am not buying it. Pope defending Garrison because of offensive efficiency numbers tells me he isn’t the guy. Short term or long term.

I’m old , slow, and short. However I can give more effort for 75% discount. I probably shoot the three better though. Lol
