Most crushing loss to the Cheats?

After our games with UNC this year, I realized how dramatic some of our wins against them have been. We have really crushed their souls on a number of occasions in the last 20 years or so. You have Seth's big game in The 2nd half comeback. Rivers dagger to the heart. Duhons coast to coast layup after their huge comeback. Tyus willing us to victory and if course Tre's improbable toughness.

Maybe I put a mental block on our losses, but it seems like their wins over us have been way more run-of-the-mill. What would you say is the most difficult loss we have had to Carolina in a comparable time frame? Is it REALLY that much better to be a Duke fan?

The two in 2009 hurt a lot. I think from 07-09 they were so damn good, and so much better than us, it was infuriating. That was right around the time I first really got into duke basketball and they were dark times. But 2009 especially was bad. So much so, that a decade a later, I still remember being in French class in high school, and these two unc fans talking behind me. "Remember when beating Duke actually meant something?" Rough times man. Thank God for 2010.

I remember in the late 90's where Antawn Jamison seemed to get 50 rebounds a game against us. Before Brand arrived. The dark times.

It seems like lately we win the close ones. When they beat us it's usually a beating, or at least feels like one. We have won the last 3 or 4 I believe.

In no particular order...
Their comeback to beat us in the regular season finale in CH in '05
Their win on Sr Day in '06
Their win and Zion's injury in '19

Well, I guess that's chronological order, really. lol

The 2005 game was tough. Lee Melchioni hits a corner three to put us up nine with three minutes to go. We just collapsed after that.

And yes, J.J. and Shelden’s senior day. Unfortunately, that was kind of an omen of things to come for the next few years.

In the really close games the last decade or so, it seems as though we’ve gotten the best of them. But, the losses still hurt all the same.

Now I am going back to the OFC era, but you younger folks its gotta be the '74 loss in their old Carmichael Auditorium. We blew the 8 point lead in 17 seconds in regulation, and lost in OT.

We were AWFUL that year, and an upset would have been HUGE. Still a gutpunch to think about.I must say however the way we won over there this year was REDEMPTION!! A perfectly executed trick shot + basket to tie at end of regulation, and yet another wild comeback at end of OT was vindication I had waited on for 47 years!!!

The J.J. and Shelden senior night loss was bad. J.J. played at a surreal level his senior year--not that Shelden was too shabby, joining J.J. as a first-team all-American--and despite our weaknesses I though we were close to a Final Four lock.

But for some reason, I completely lost confidence in the possibility of that team winning a national championship after that loss. I'm not sure I can explain why exactly, other than just a feeling.

Actually, I had a similar feeling about last year's team. Two-headed monster teams worry me. But I guess the difference for me last year was I had more confidence in Zion's ability to lead us to the Final Four than J.J., mostly because Zion was such a hyper-efficient scorer. And J.J., as spectacular as he was, would have an off-shooting game here and there and I felt like that would likely bite us in the tourney at some point. Before that Carolina loss, I thought "some point" would be in the Final Four. After the Carolina loss I was sure "some point" would be before the Final Four.

'05 was bad too. That meltdown was brutal.

Amen Jim. I remember Paul Fox trying to launch that 3/4 court length pass over Bobby Jones in Cameron. Gut wrenching! OFC

I wish Bobby Jones had played at Duke. If he had played 15 years later Coach K would have at him in a Duke uniform. You guys know how I feel about unc and I always have expecially the Bobby Jones years because they owned us. I have to tell it like it is. It was hard not to like Bobby Jones. OFC

The double overtime loss at Cameron in '95 was horrible. I always felt if the team had won that game, they might of broke even that season.

I wasn't around for the 74 game (born in 79) but I went back and watched some highlights of the game in Carmichael. Good Lord I would have lost my mind. That was terrible to watch forty something years later.

Also went back and watched some Bobby Jones highlights. Definitely seemed like a winner. Good athlete.
