Most egregious play/series yesterday?

I'm going with the run up the middle yesterday, especially when we got inside the 5 on our first drive. That had to be the most uninspired play-calling I've ever seen. It reminds me of when Spurrier called the fade 3 times in a row vs. Bama early in his tenure. It was done to prove a point... but that was Spurrier. What message was Shula sending? We have no other running play besides running up the middle with a small (and not our biggest) running back?

Beamer must be in the files and Shula knows it.

There were so many teeth-gnashing moments, it's hard to zero in on a particular one. Surely the first and goal series you mention comes to mind.

Another point at which I thought my head might explode was Seller's first down run in which he rather casually went out of bounds at the marker. It was was indeed upheld on replay review, but why be content with making it unnecessarily close when he pretty easily could have gained another yard or so? I know QBs need to protect themselves, but when you are that close to the first down marker, you need to show some fight.

When you think that Ok D is ranked No 1 in the country and that is what our OC came up with? Does Shula really want to be here?

And on 4th down too.

I almost see the repeated run up the middle from the standpoint of "sending a message" to your team. Wr had a new OL coach and we may have been trying to prove a point.

Bad idea though. Very bad idea.

The continual running up the middle, not taking the field goal, Sellers sauntering out of bounds at the marker and that horribly telegraphed fake punt.

There are plenty of calls to tick everyone off.

I'll beat the dead horse and continue to do so until it changes....

It was 2 plays. Sellers scrambling out of trouble, only to run backwards, CLEARLY HAVING TIME to throw it away, but stepping out of bounds without even trying to throw it away, and losing yardage.

I'm pretty sure you can't win football games going backwards. It really doesn't make me angry that he does it. What angers me is that he probably has all the potential in the world to become a really good QB at this level and the next level but at this stage of his progression - I'm afraid he's going to listen to the people telling him he's the #1 pick, & Heisman front runner, etc....etc....

And it's clear to me he ain't even close and needs another year, at least. That's my rub.

Not kicking the field goal from the 6 on 4th down. Take any random 1A coach in South Carolina & they'd say, "take the 3 points."
I think he was trying to prove a point and test his team, but his team couldn't cash the check he wrote that time. And that fake punt pass play was one of the most pitiful such plays of all time, and it was a too little too late situation anyway.

This points to his awareness on the field. He did this last year, until he lowered his head against A&M and got the 1st down.
The fact he continues to do it points to a bigger issue.

He might as well put the goggles back on since having peripheral vision doesn't make him any more aware of what's going on around him.

I'm not going to blame Sellers for his lack of development. Or the fact that he has no running game and when he drops back to pass, it's slow developing routes that he has not time to choose who's open.

Sellers was literal Superman against Clemson last year, masking most of the same offensive issues we're seeing right now.

It's simply not feasible for a QB to play like that every game. Not possible. He should not be faulted for that.

I agree with all of this. Even single-wing tailbacks didn't have to bear as much of the burden as Sellers does, and most of them had way better blocking because the single-wing was run first.

I'm not blaming Sellers one bit for how things are going. He had a modicum of support last year and has notably less this year. This team simply isn't as good across the board on either side of the ball and I don't see why some people cannot admit that.

The fake punt was telegraphed and was thrown right to the defensive player as if our punter was going to throw it whether the receiver was open or not. Which matched the play calling on the goal line where we were going to run it straight into the teeth of the LSU defense regardless how stacked the DL was. We are consistent with our thinking.

I remember one series in the first half where Sellers dropped back to pass on the first play and lost 20 yards to a sack on first down. Then i think we ran on second down and threw a short pass on third. We punted on fourth down and 20 and I just kept thinking how this offense goes one way most of the time: backwards

That just sounds like the typical offensive series for this season.

When he needs 3-5 seconds for the routes to develop and he only has 2.

No QB would be successful behind our current OL and playing behind it would send most to the portal.

Some posters here noted that our biggest success down the stretch last year came with Sellers scrambling like crazy, either running for big gains or buying time to find an open receiver. Illinois adjusted for that in the bowl game and those plays mostly haven't been there since.
