Oh the mythical (pollster) titles! Got to love them. I wonder if they had a bulletin board so people could post notes on which undefeated team deserved the mythical state title! Edgy Nation, old school style!

In states with more than one class, there is actually not A state champion, but multiple state champions. In Illinois, for example, there are 8 state champions in football each year. Not the same thing as an ACTUAL state champion like you used to have in basketball before it went to classes. Now that WAS indeed a state champion!! I guess the way it is done now for multiple sports is no surprise - everybody needs their participation ribbon!!!!

I'm with you on the participation trophies, but there are definitely talent/depth gaps when you get to schools with more kids in almost every sport. There needs to be class structures of some kind, and I think the IHSA has actually done a decent job of this in regards to most of the sports and activities.

Based on that criteria, do you consider FCS, D2 or D3 real National Championships? I would not consider winning a state championship at the 2A or 3A level equivalent to a participation ribbon.

Okay folks, from the IHSA website Records & History:

JCA 13 titles, 4 2nd
Mt. Carmel 12 titles, 5 2nd
Providence 10 titles, 3 2nd
ESL 8 titles, 3 2nd
Addison Driscoll 8 titles
WWS 7 titles, 4 2nd
Rochester 7 titles
Maine South 6 titles, 3 2nd
Montini 6 titles, 2 2nd

But what about the other end of the titles spectrum:
Zeigler-Royalton, 2 playoff appearances, 1 title...

Get real. Of the double-digit schools on that list, only Mt Carmel won its trophies against big-time programs (with the exception of Bloomington once).

JCA might have won a couple of games against large schools, as might have Proviidence, but MC won the most trophies against schools playing after the sun went down on Saturday.

Quite frankly, one of the few big-time schools JCA and PC played in the championship game was Mt Carmel, and those two teams received their trophies first that day.

Bring it on, boys. Count the hardware.

I really enjoy the guys who claim that "a trophy is a trophy." I appreciate your creativity.

MC with only two titles against largest class competition. Enough with the arrogance.

I’m okay with 8 champions every year. I wish more football players got to experience the joy of it. Getting the police escort to the stadium, hearing the crowd cheer outside the stadium and then seeing your family in the stands is truly an amazing experience. Take nothing away from those smaller schools. They too had the skill, luck and desire to be called State Champions!

Saw providence rough up MC in a semi at gately in 2014. Did that championship not count for PC because it was 7A? I assume it would have counted for MC though.

Like the other posters said, if the criteria is largest class titles then MC is not even in the top handful of schools. You can't have your cake and eat too.

MC63 - there are a lot of good things about you - your military service and love of high school football being a couple. You're also an insensitive, arrogant, out of touch jerk sometimes.

The irony is this... On one hand you love high school football and the kids who play the sport you love. You have admiration for quality programs and quality coaches. On the other hand, you show a complete irreverence to smaller school programs because it doesn't fit into your CCL Blue/MC worldview.

To bash Joliet Catholic for winning state championships in smaller classifications? Just Wow! I guess Mike Alstott and Tom Thayer are in some way inadequate because they went to 5A JCA istead of 7A/8A MC.

The more you talk, the more you expose yourself as a fool.

Proverbs 18:6-7
"The lips of fools bring them strife,
and their mouths invite a beating.

The mouths of fools are their undoing,
and their lips are a snare to their very lives."

Very interesting.

On one hand I understand MC63 on the other hand as others have pointed out, it's a pot meet kettle situation depending on what school you follow. NNFAN as a Naperville North fan in the 90's is probably not impressed with 5A championships the same way beating Roxana doesn't impress me.

At the same time I don't view smaller classes as lesser. Just don't use it as evidence that you're better than us.

Joliet Catholic's first 5 championships were in the second biggest class. In addition, the 99 team won the 4A championship. They defeated MC that year, who went on to win the 5A title. I guess that title should not count for MC.

You are something....why do you feel it necessary to knock teams that win a state championship. Every state championship is legitimate, 1A or 8A. To suggest otherwise is silly.

Angry, Angry man.....

MC63, I love how you love to stir up the pot! Again babbling about “value” of state titles. I’m sure Seff would love to have dinner with you, face to face, so that you can tell him how “cheap and undeserved” his 9 championships were. Maybe you can come to a PC alumni event and tell the players from those championship years how “cheap and undeserved” their titles were. Let me know when you have time on your calendar and I can make the arrangements. I’m sure the JCA contingent can arrange for the same.

I never called your championships "cheap and undeserving" nor can I recall using the expression "value" in their regards.

Please let me know exactly where I said either of those remarks.

You're making this nonsense up -- sorta like my school being a bad guy because you felt a need to forfeit.

I've never degraded any team for winning at those levels. My comments about winning lower level championships have been consistent .. it ain't the same as winning in the big time. To claim otherwise is disingenuous.

First, I do not need any patronizing remarks from someone such as yourself regarding my military service or anything else.

Secondly, I never degraded lower level championships. Never. I said that the number of such championships was not a criterion for comparison against programs at higher levels.

Third, I sure don't need somebody throwing bible phrases at me. Quotes from the bible have been used to justify slavery, as well as other horrors. All sorts of evil people quote the bible everyday. We hear frauds like the son of Billy Graham approving of sex abuse, Others are raising millions from poor people to buy private jets.
