There have no doubt been some amazing filmmakers to grace the silver screen with their unique visions - Alfred Hitchcock, Martin Scorsese, Roman Polanski, Stanley Kubrick, and Steven Spielberg all jump out at me as masters of their craft and amazing directors (well, Spielberg can be amazing when he's not trying to create a blockbuster film). On that same note actors like Charleton Heston, Elizabeth Taylor, Clint Eastwood, Dustin Hoffman, Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, and Daniel Day-Lewis all jump out at me as masters of their craft of acting.
Unfortunately, Hollywood is prone to putting labels of "genius" or "legendary" or "remarkable" on directors and actors that have a peculiar habit of sticking even when their careers do a complete 180.
So, who do you feel is the most overrated director and actor of all-time? Someone who praise is heaped upon year in and year out, yet, when their body of work is analyzed, really hasn't produced anything worthy of such praise.
For me, the director has to be Woody Allen. Yes the man has had films considered a classic like 'Annie Hall' (which is totally thanks to the terrific acting by Diane Keaton and not Allen imo), but he is consistently praised as a revolutionary filmmaker when, in reality, most of his films are rehashes of the same tired plots. I mean, how many times can one man direct a movie about a neurotic New Yorker?
I just can't wrap my mind around why he is considered such a monumental filmmaker. His movies are boring, and redundant and generally forgettable (although I did enjoy 'Radio Days', but probably only because it was outside the box for him), yet every time he releases a new film it's automatically considered a work of art, even if it's a steaming pile of crap.
The actor I would nominate in this thread as most overrated HAS to be Jennifer Lawrence. Is she a decent actress? Sure. Is she good enough to already have a best actress Oscar under her belt and three other acting nominations at the age of 26? Hell no! Her acting is usually wooden and generally uninspired, yet she is the darling of Hollywood for some reason. I especially don't know how she was nominated for 'American Hustle'? She was particularly awful in that film and had one of the worst fake Nu-Yawk accents I've ever heard. Now she's been nominated for 'Joy' which is another basic and lackluster performance imo. I think they're just going to nominate her every time she does a movie not called 'Hunger Games' from now on.
