Most Overrated Filmmaker/actor

There have no doubt been some amazing filmmakers to grace the silver screen with their unique visions - Alfred Hitchcock, Martin Scorsese, Roman Polanski, Stanley Kubrick, and Steven Spielberg all jump out at me as masters of their craft and amazing directors (well, Spielberg can be amazing when he's not trying to create a blockbuster film). On that same note actors like Charleton Heston, Elizabeth Taylor, Clint Eastwood, Dustin Hoffman, Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, and Daniel Day-Lewis all jump out at me as masters of their craft of acting.

Unfortunately, Hollywood is prone to putting labels of "genius" or "legendary" or "remarkable" on directors and actors that have a peculiar habit of sticking even when their careers do a complete 180.

So, who do you feel is the most overrated director and actor of all-time? Someone who praise is heaped upon year in and year out, yet, when their body of work is analyzed, really hasn't produced anything worthy of such praise.

For me, the director has to be Woody Allen. Yes the man has had films considered a classic like 'Annie Hall' (which is totally thanks to the terrific acting by Diane Keaton and not Allen imo), but he is consistently praised as a revolutionary filmmaker when, in reality, most of his films are rehashes of the same tired plots. I mean, how many times can one man direct a movie about a neurotic New Yorker?

I just can't wrap my mind around why he is considered such a monumental filmmaker. His movies are boring, and redundant and generally forgettable (although I did enjoy 'Radio Days', but probably only because it was outside the box for him), yet every time he releases a new film it's automatically considered a work of art, even if it's a steaming pile of crap.

The actor I would nominate in this thread as most overrated HAS to be Jennifer Lawrence. Is she a decent actress? Sure. Is she good enough to already have a best actress Oscar under her belt and three other acting nominations at the age of 26? Hell no! Her acting is usually wooden and generally uninspired, yet she is the darling of Hollywood for some reason. I especially don't know how she was nominated for 'American Hustle'? She was particularly awful in that film and had one of the worst fake Nu-Yawk accents I've ever heard. Now she's been nominated for 'Joy' which is another basic and lackluster performance imo. I think they're just going to nominate her every time she does a movie not called 'Hunger Games' from now on.

Good call on Spike Lee. He can take a workable premise and just craft a turd of a film from it.

I'll add Sandra Bullock as a crappy actress.

^ same thing that Pacino did after Scent of a Woman. Everything was hoo-ahh guy. Even Heat (which is still an awesome movie) was Pacino being Pacino. It worked well in that movie.

I think Jennifer Lawrence is pretty terrific, but she should not have been nominated for "American Hustle." Amy Adams was better, imho. I'll throw out Tim Burton and Wes Anderson as two I think are generally overrated. Brad Pitt (not sure what he's rated, but I think he's just okay).

Tim Burton for sure. But is he even rated? I mean he's not been relevant for years. I disagree with Wes Anderson. Either you like Wes's style or you hate it. I like it, but I can only take it in small doses.

Ben Affleck- just doesn't sell it and has made so many horrible movies (Gigli, Paycheck, etc.).

Sean Penn- he plays the same angry guy in about half of his roles. That isn't acting, its just who he is.

M. Knight Shyamalan- two good movies (The Sixth Sense & Unbreakable) with a big twist ending in 1999-2000. Tried to repeat the same formula and failed miserably many times over the next 16 years.

Disagree with Denzel. Although, he tends to play roles in a similar denzel way, it works. One of my favorites is Man on Fire. He really acts the hell out of that role in that movie.

Spielberg. Post ROTLA he became so formulaic that it was nauseating. Followed closely by Lucas.

Actor, Bruce Willis. Luckiest dude that ever lived. I have never understood why him and his face wince ever became famous.

Spike Lee also did 25th hour, which was brilliant. I haven't seen the vast majority of his wrok, but from what I have I wouldn't consider him overrated.

I am amazing at how people can allow their political leanings to color their view of pretty much everything. All the Sean Penn votes are ridiculous as he is a wonderful actor and filmmaker. I am surprised the right hasn't trotted out Matt Damon to beat up on yet in this thread.

I just don't like the movies he's been in
The biggest percentage of Hollywood is liberal. I didn't think John Wayne was much of an actor either, and he was pretty conservative.

How can anyone not like "Falcon and the Snowman" or his zany turn as a lawyer in "Carlito's Way" just to name a couple?

Actually it's the same time he banged his current wife before she was his wife without his previous wife while she was his wife knowing because she was her daughter at the time. Or something like that.

Not a big fan of Allen. He's hard to like but he has made a handful of decent pictures. Are we saying overrated by the general public, critics, cinnephiles, a combination? Legimate cinephiles and historians aren't going to rate Allen very high. Sight and sound didn't have a single picture of his in their top 100.

These arguments always remind me of the epic rap battle between Steven Spielberg and Alfred Hitchcock on youtube.

Robert Altman? Come on now. His long takes are incredible. Peter Jackson yes. If he is even rated at all.

There was a sequel in the works but it fell through. I thought the ending was pretty brilliant in that film.

Most overrated filmmaker- Terrence Malick. He makes nothing but garbage and gets praised for it. He's the Tree of Life director. I think Tarantino has went to hell and peaked a long time ago.

As for actors, oh man, there's so many to list but a few off the to of my head.

-Julia Roberts-Plays every character the EXACT SAME WAY. Nothing ever changes.
-Sean Penn- a pretentious douche with two Oscars despite over-acting. Never should have got the Oscar over Rourke in 2009 for The Wrestler.

-George Clooney- Smug and pretentious in the majority of his films. I like a couple but he's always very similar in the majority of his movies.

DiCaprio. Haven't see all of them. But I thought his frazzled act in the departed was comical. Didn't see a charming grifter in Wolf of Wall Street. Boring in Inception. Not believable in Gangs of New York. Too boy band for titanic and The quick and the dead. Not a bad actor. He was great in Aviator and Django. And he's great at picking scripts. I like those other movies above, but because of everyone else.

Michael Bay. And I know he's not considered a great director and it's a cliche answer. But there are people who will try and argue he makes good popcorn movies, and I disagree with that too. Bad Boys is not dumb fun, it's just dumb. Armageddon fellates Bruce Willis too much. Those transformer movies are unwatchable. Pain and Gain was unfunny. I can't imagine how bad those Benghazi and Mutant Turtle movies are.

I think we are again confusing "overrated" with "I don't like". Tarentino and Tim Burton are not overrated as they are excellent filmamkers with a style all their own, I don't like Burton and I do like Tarentino, but neither are overrated. There are very few actors who have a great deal of range. Leonardo Dicaprio has probably the most range of anyone I have ever seen, again, you may not like what he does in a film, but he has a huge range. I am being sexist as I had to stop and make myself think of a woman, but Meryl Streep is amazing as well. Others are picked to basically play themselves, which is fine as long as that fits. We all know who they are: Russell Crow, Juia Roberts, Denzel Washington, Pacino, etc.

Dont forget Flight. Probably my favorite performance from him other than Training Day.

Tarantino is awful. Just absolutely atrocious. The only thing that saves him is that gratuitous violence is apparently "art" these days.

Reservoir Dogs is the only great movie hes made. The only other movie Ive liked from him, Django, was entertaining, but nothing even close to some cinematic achievement. I have no idea why hes so highly regarded.

Denzel peaked with Carbon Copy, downhill ever since.

Pacino's overrated, imo. Bill Shatner thinks AP over acts.

Pacino and Deniro are not the same actors they were in the seventies and eighties. Pacino in the Godfathers, Serpico, A Dog Day Afternoon, was an incredible nuanced actor. Same for Deniro's earlier work. Both of those guys studied with best.
