Dont forget Flight. Probably my favorite performance from him other than Training Day.

Reservoir Dogs is the only great movie hes made. The only other movie Ive liked from him, Django, was entertaining, but nothing even close to some cinematic achievement. I have no idea why hes so highly regarded.
Tarantino isn't highly regarded. At least not in the same way Hitchcock, Kubrick, Ozu, Welles, Ford, Bergman, Renoir, etc are regarded. He has his fan boys, but you're not going to see him on any major director list. At least not near the top. That said he was still a breath of fresh air in the nineties. He's great with dialogue and is probably a better writer than he is a director. Pulp Fiction was a cinematic achievmment in that it upset a lot of the traditionalist in cinema. Even the script to that film was different in how it was structured (chapters with an index). I can see why some people don't get him or get the hype. I'm not a fan and wouldn't even put him in my top twenty directors, but he's made an imprint. Tarantino might be overrated by fan boys and novice moviegoers, but cinematically he's probably rated about where he should be rated.

People confuse Tarantino the writer (great) with Tarantino the director (mediocre). My favorite QT script by far was "True Romance" where his full prowess as a writer was on stellar display. Thankfully he sold it and thus somebody else got to do the directing (Tony Scott).

A lot of people consider the confrontation between Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper in True Romance to be the finest 10 minutes in film history and I agree.

Not much after Kill Bill that I care for.

Wish he wouldn't have put Christian Slater in that role. Awful.

Pacino and Deniro are not the same actors they were in the seventies and eighties. Pacino in the Godfathers, Serpico, A Dog Day Afternoon, was an incredible nuanced actor. Same for Deniro's earlier work. Both of those guys studied with best.

And then after "Heat," they just said "eff it" and stopped trying.

Tarantino apparently hated True Romance so much that he wanted his name taken off of it because it was changed so much.

I say "good." True Romance is in my top 10 favorites of all-time. I actually used to live down the street from The Safarri Inn. Great cast.

Spielberg. Post ROTLA he became so formulaic that it was nauseating. Followed closely by Lucas.

Actor, Bruce Willis. Luckiest dude that ever lived. I have never understood why him and his face wince ever became famous.
Lol so saving private Ryan was formulaic and nauseating? Yeah ok.

Al never read a script he couldn't scream the lines for... overrated.

Denzel, is one of the best ever. I never feel like he is acting when I watch a movie he is in.

As for directors, don't really pay that much attention to them. But I have never been a fan of Woody Allen.

Uh, Pulp Fiction ring a bell with you? Thought some of the scenes in Inglorious Basterds were amazing as well, although the ending was so over the top was silly.

Sort of agree with George Clooney, has done some good work, but would not say he is an all time great by no means. Al Pacino someone in the thread says he has played basically the same role about 20 times now, agree he is not all that either.

Can't think of too many overrated directors, but actors/actresses?

Go to Hollywood and throw a rock.

No, but I've seen I Am Sam.
Carlito's Way is a must-see. I've always felt it was almost a low key alternate sequel to Scarface. A mellow and aged Tony Montana fresh out of the joint and just looking for a soft place to land but guys like him don't land soft. The ending I think is just superb and Sean Penn is fantastic as the nutty lawyer and Al Pacino is amazing as Carlito. Great narration. The knocks on Al in this thread are just stupid. He is as fine an actor as their ever will be.

I just don't like the movies he's been in
The biggest percentage of Hollywood is liberal. I didn't think John Wayne was much of an actor either, and he was pretty conservative.
Exactly, does not matter who you pick for the most of them are liberal. Sean Penn sucks. Woody Allen sucks. But, my nod for the worst is Michael Moore.

Politics in almost every thread. F*ck sake.

How about John Wayne? Played basically the same character in every movie and became Mr. Patriot despite dodging the draft.

See how easy it is?

(Director) Wes Anderson - Unwatchable dreck for the most part. Even though I love Bill Murray and Rushmore had its moments.
(Actor) Johnny Depp

Agree about WIllis (everything except 'Die Hard' which is a classic and he was great in), but saying that Spielberg was formulaic in everything post 1981 is absurd. Films like 'E.T.' (which went against the grain and cast the alien as a good guy), 'The Color Purple', 'Empire of the Sun', 'Schindlers List', 'Jurassic Park', 'Amistad', 'Saving Private Ryan', 'Minority Report', 'Catch Me if you Can', 'Munich', The Adventures of Tintin', 'Lincoln', and 'Bridge of Spies' all prove that statement to be false.

-Sean Penn- a pretentious douche with two Oscars despite over-acting. Never should have got the Oscar over Rourke in 2009 for The Wrestler.

Agree 100%! Mickey Rourke was incredible as Randy "The Ram" Robinson! It was such a sad movie because it was very true to life for a lot of retired or semi-retired pro wrestlers having fallen on hard times. I have met a bunch of them in my lifetime after their careers were over and most of them were just like that.

That being said, Penn deserved his Oscar for 'Mystic River'. That was a great performance, and his performance as Harvey Milk in 'Milk' was great as well, but Rourke's was better imo.
