This is probably an unpopular opinion but I think Angus Young is over rated. I love AC/DC and his sound is very distinguishable but most chord progressions are very basic and he uses mainly power chords for most songs.
I'm going with Creed Bratton.

I mean, you're playing on a top 5 hit... and no guitar solo?

Lame.

Good pic of Creed at 1:38.

Purely subjective. The more appropriate question is probably "what famous guitarists do you not like," thus being overrated to you personally. I would list Carlos Santana as overrated, but that's mainly because I don't like his sound/style. Same with Joe B., Satriani, Hendrix, The Edge, N. Young, and J. Garcia. For instance, Hendrix. I would never argue against his "greatness," but I'd MUCH rather listen to SRV play "Voodoo Child," "Little Wing," and "Third Stone From the Sun."

Sorry, quit reading these posts after just a few.

Slash? Absolutely not overrated.
Joe b? Mad skills, not overrated

Hendrix? Revolutionized music. Very sloppy player technically

Keith urban? Was a very prominent studio musician before making it. Not overrated. Not the best , but very tasteful

Agree, except on KU. Never heard anything he's done on the guitar since he's 'made it' that was all that impressive. I've heard he was a sought after studio guy but I just haven't seen anything personally that looks like he's much better than many, many other guitarists who aren't talked about as being really good. He's not a note *****, for sure, but hanging on one bent note while grimacing mightily is not exactly my idea of technical expertise. I've probably only had a very limited sample of his work so I could very well be mistaken about him.

The other takes above? 100% correct.

Not that I totally disagree with you about urban. I just know it’s pretty hard to be a Nashville session player. I certainly can’t stand to watch him. And don’t like his music. Was just saying I don’t think he’s necessarily overrated. Maybe he his. My take is also limited. There’s a video I saw of him doing a version of devil went down to Georgia, live, a long time ago. Lots of cheese, and kinda sloppy(May have been drunk ), but there’s some pretty cool picking in between lol

I like Jeff Beck and he is obviously a great guitar player. But he's valued most for his instrumental/fusion-like records in the 70's. At the same time, truly great jazz fusion guitarists like John McLaughlin are obscure (at least in rock circles) and, imo McLaughlin is far better. So, I think Beck is overrated.

I can go along with that, but love his playing, his music. Malcom as a rhythm player would make for great talking points in the underrated discussion. So good together, brothers. Separate parts played together going into the final "gonna get you" chorus of Shoot to Thrill some of the best, complimentary rhythm work in rock music history. Absolutely timeless sounds.
