This one is bound to piss each other off. But not much to discuss when it comes to Gamecock Sports.

so, what movie(s) do you think is overrated & WHY?

I don’t watch the Oscars or Emmys or any of that, but I have tried to watch a few of the films that won those awards this time, the DiCaprio/penn film, the film starring the guy that played the east Dillon qb in the Friday night lights tv series, etc. I didn’t make it through any of them. Sorry to veer from subject.

Most of the movies that win the awards are garbage. It’s just the artsy fartsy award people pumping up themselves or deciding it’s someone’s time to win one. Not always the case, but often the case. The criteria they have for a film to be nominated these days is insane. It rules out about 90% of the movies made.

Off the top of my head, the Indiana Jones movies, with the exception of The Last Crusade, are all overrated in my opinion.

Raiders of the Lost Ark is good, but not great. The Temple of Doom is a bad movie…it’s just a sequel. The Last Crusade is actually awesome and one of the best movies of the decade. The last 2 movies of the franchise were completely unwatchable…cash grabs.

I’ll still enjoy a couple of them from time to time, but always amazes me how highly they are regarded, usually due to Raiders of the Lost Ark. Again, that movie can’t touch The Last Crusade.

Well, if by "overrated" you're talking about critically-acclaimed and award winning movies that the vast majority of movie-going public doesn't care for, then that's a very long list. You can basically throw a dart at a list of Oscar winners and have a pretty good chance at landing on one that fits this category.

But when I think of overrated movies, I think of ones that seem to have achieved legendary iconic status and are loved by millions but just didn't do anything for me. I have to put the original National Lampoon's Vacation in this category. I feel bad because I really want to like it (I love Christmas Vacation), but the last time I watched it, I laughed very little.

I don't think a minority determines that for everyone else. I agree with your first definition, since it's not just one person's opinion. I feel movies like Gladiator are overrated.

You also have to consider huge box office hits. IMO, most heavy CGI movies are overrated.

A lot of the movies made today, are made to accomodate the short attention spans of younger people.
A movie like "Shawshank Redemption" would be a bust.

And some of these series being shown on the various streaming networks, are quite excellent and better than regular movies.

It's kinda funny, there are a ton of movies out there I can watch over and over again. Usually the critically-acclaimed movies I tend to be one and done. Guess I think they are all over rated. First one of those that come to mind is Forrest Gump so I'll go with that.

Short attention spans, yes, but also made for a non-English-speaking worldwide release. Nuances of dialogue and plot don't always translate well, but city-destroying monsters and giant explosions span all languages.

Some of them are just fun to watch, regardless of how cheesy they are. "Running Man" with Arnold is one. Netflix cycles all kinds of classics every month. I can watch some of the Scorsese movies over and over. So many great scenes. It helps that I can fast-forward to my next favorite scene.

"Casino Royale"...riveting. Try again.

That was a spectacular reboot of the franchise. However, the last one was total garbage... for many reasons. I own every Bond movie... except that one and I'll never add it to the collection. What an embarrassing way to close the curtain on Craig's Bond run.

The Godfather.
In fairness, any movie commonly referred to as the best movie ever made is going to attract the "overrated" label from lots of folks who think it doesnt meet that highest-of-highest standards.

"SPECTRE" wasn't much better. Total waste of Christoph Waltz"s talents. 😬

I will say this, the first time I watched it I hated it after about 30 minutes and turned it off. Didn’t try to watch it again until about 15 years later and I loved it. You have to get through the first couple of “days” when it starts to just speed up and it’s great!

Watch it annually now. But I can totally relate to someone hating it initially. I’d say give it another shot.

Out of Africa. Fell asleep in the theater. I'm gonna catch hell for this, but Caddyshack. It's not that I don't like it, there are several timeless one-liners, I just didn't think it was that good as a whole.
