The correct answer was Charles Laughton. You're welcome.

/end thread.
Yeah, but Laughton was a freak who was into coprophagy.

De Palma is definitely overrated. I would say Fincher is underrated. But the most underrated director BY FAR is Robert Altman.

MASH
Nashville
McCabe and Mrs. Miller
Popeye
Short Cuts
The Player
And countless others

Do you ever hear anybody talk about him? How many people actually have ever even heard of him? I'm 36. I bet 90% of the people I know don't even know who he is.

I hear a lot of people who know film talk about Altman. You have to have a criteria based a little bit more than on the popular zeitgeist or you're gonna have Micheal Bay topping lists.

My apologies, I didn't know the thread was Most Underrated Director among people who know about film. All of the responses point to such.

Geez.

Does Kevin Smith write the movies? As for "Directing".. there's nothing there that the lot of us couldn't do.

However, it's the writing that makes Kevin Smith movies great.

So not sure how to classify him..

Too many big names on this list to be underrated. But I have to go with John Carpenter. People think "Oh Horror movies.. he made Michael Myers, right?".. and that by itself says how underrated he is.

Most people don't even know about The Thing (@Willy4UK 's favorite movie, ask him about it), let alone who directed it.

Tusk was alright. Mall Rats. J&SBSB.

It's difficult to work with a word like underrated. We use it in basketball, because there are clear metrics. Movies and films are all opinion.

What about Jackie Chan? He does it all for his genre.

I think Del Toro also has some interesting movies like Pan's Labyrinth.

I'd probably add David Fincher. His acclaim to quality movie ratio is super low.. and that to me says "underrated". Dude has put out some of the greatest movies but his name never seems to carry well (at least as well as Tarantino, Spielberg, or Scorsese).

Cronenberg is maybe 1/10th as known as Carpenter and he's had some great sci-fi horror mvoies: The Fly, Video Drome, Scanners, History of Violence.. def underrated.

James Cameron. The man has created box office juggernauts in Titanic and Avatar. Terminator, Aliens 1-2 are some of the best Sci Fi/Actions movies ever made. Seems
Iike everything he touches has an epic, larger than life feel to it. Also has another run in him with Avatar 2-5.
You're 17 you know nothing about directors.

It's crazy that Avatar is the highest grossing film of all time worldwide, but try asking someone to name two characters off the top of their head or to quote a line of dialogue.
That CGI was amazing though. Same reason LOTR was popular and Star Wars early. Star Wars now just rules all freaking disney

You're right, I haven't seen every pre-70s movie and I don't know old directors (besides Alfred Hitchcock) but I do know a good movie when I see it. And James Cameron makes good films, but he's still viewed as this CGI specialist who doesn't write good plots. And my opinion is that he is more than that.
