STILLWATER, Okla. (April 16, 2023) Looking for the sweep, the West Virginia baseball team came up short, falling 11-6 to No. 18 Oklahoma State, Sunday afternoon at O’Brate Stadium. The Mountaineers drop to 25-11 overall and 5-4 in the Big 12 while the Cowboys improve to 24-13 and 8-7 in conference play.

Leading off for the first time this season, graduate student Tevin Tucker went 4-for-5 with a double and two runs scored. Freshman Ellis Garcia, redshirt-senior Caleb McNeely, and freshman Logan Sauve each contributed with two hits while sophomore Grant Hussey hit his eighth home run of the season.

The Mountaineers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first as McNeely had an RBI single before Garcia drove in two more with a double.

Oklahoma State tied the game in the second with a three-run home run before taking a 5-3 lead in the third with two solo home runs.

Freshman Maxx Yehl came out of the bullpen and delivered 2.1 scoreless innings to keep the game close before West Virginia tied it up with two runs in the seventh. Hussey led off the inning with a solo home run which was followed by walk to Garcia, a stolen base, and a single off the bat of freshman Zack Ramppen.

The Mountaineers took a short-lived lead in the eighth as graduate student Dayne Leonard had an RBI double, but in the home half, the Cowboys put up a six-spot to re-take the lead and pull away.

West Virginia will be back on the diamond for the Backyard Brawl, Wednesday at PNC Park. First pitch against the Panthers is set for 6 p.m.

They had this game too. Up 6-5 going in to the bottom of the 8th. But the wheels kind of fell off in the bottom half of the inning. A sweep would have been great, but taking 2 of 3 is almost as good.
