MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (October 11, 2017) – For the second consecutive season, the West Virginia University baseball team will play at PNC Park, the Pittsburgh Pirates announced today. The Mountaineers will face Penn State on Tuesday, April 10, 2018.
The matchup comes after WVU and PSU faced off in the first-ever collegiate game at the Major League ballpark last season, a 4-2 West Virginia win.
"We are very excited to return to PNC Park in 2018,” WVU coach Randy Mazey said. “Our game there last year was one of the most memorable moments of the season for our team, and we look forward to returning to PNC Park and making more memories. The opportunity to play in one of the finest Major League ballparks again is one the Mountaineers are looking forward to. I am really appreciative of the entire Pittsburgh Pirates organization, especially Bob Nutting and Frank Coonelly, for their continued support and commitment in making this amazing event possible for our team and WVU."
A game time and ticket information for the April 10 contest will be announced at a later date.
The 2018 season will mark the third consecutive year the Mountaineers will play at a Major League facility. In 2016, they faced the Arizona Diamondbacks in an exhibition contest at Salt River Fields, Arizona’s Spring Training ballpark.
Prior to 2017, West Virginia’s last visit to the home of the Pittsburgh Pirates came in 1998, a 9-8 win over rival Pitt at Three Rivers Stadium.
The 2017 win at PNC Park helped propel WVU to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1996. The Mountaineers used runs in four consecutive innings and a strong performance from the pitching staff to earn the win. A complete recap from the game is available here.
West Virginia’s complete 2018 schedule will be unveiled later this fall.
