Do any of you live in the Virginia area near DC? If so will you suggest the best areas to live please. Thanks in advance.

My wife and I will arrive there in about a week. We looked around the area earlier this week. I am thinking the Centreville area. We will be staying in the McLean area on a short term basis. (We want to buy, not lease.) Thanks in advance for any information.

I'm confident you'd enjoy either the Washington Highlands/Bellevue or the Columbia Heights/Mount Pleasant areas. YWIA.

Agreed. Metro makes it so much easier to get around if you live close to a stop. Otherwise, 1-2 hours of traffic getting home everyday

To be fair to OP, he wont be stopping at every tattoo parlor to find who does the best tramp stamps.

Watch out for the swamp lands. Apparently Trump will be having them drained soon. Potential for some subsidence in the surrounding lands.

Moving again? I seem to remember you asking about Charleston or someplace a year or 2 ago.

I did...to Summerville SC near Charleston....duty calls....gotta go...

Sorry that you have to pull up again so soon. But like you say "duty calls", and sometimes it has to be done. If you don't mind me asking, what is your job? Just curious.

I could tell you but... nah, not that important but I work in IT, I've been blessed to have been able to make positive differences in several different situations and... That's all anyone could ask. I could get political but won't but now I am pretty excited again...and leave it at that.

I made the move. I am in temporary housing in McLean, I have made an offer on a house in Lorton. If they take it I'm good, more than I wanted to spend but for about 30k more I actually got a house built in this century. Some of the older homes are solid but they are so chopped up they waste so much space. Oh well, we shall see...

Are you working for the Russians hacking emails? You can tell us, it's a small community here.

I loved the work I did up there (Pentagon, DHS, etc) and also did IT work. Jobs were fantastic, but the traffic, highly pretentious/fake people, and exorbitant cost of living got very old after about 5 years. Use public transportation every chance you get, the parking situation up there is a not only a clusterfuck, but expensive.

If it's in your budget, Old Town Alexandria is a really cool place. They have every type of food cuisine in the area and the bars are way more laid back and not as many d-bags. From there, you can easily metro into DC, take a bus, or a water taxi.

Lived in DC for about 7 years. Don't miss that damn place for a minute (even though I get back there for business at least 4-5 times per year).

Where you live in DC will largely depend on your budget and where you plan to work. If you're able to swing $750k or higher (which is unfortunately not that exorbitant within the Beltway), then I would echo Old Town Alexandria as my favorite area in or around DC. Great restaurants, bars, and close to the King Street or Braddock Road Metros. If you want something with a bit more space, north Arlington is a decent area and close to Clarendon/Ballston corridor. Finally, McLean is a no-brainer if you can afford it.

Anything lower than $750k, you're likely looking at something outside the Beltway --- which means your commute (and overall quality of life) will suck horribly...number one reason why my family moved. And the weather. The weather is the worst.

Thanks,
I just bought a house in Lorton. It's a 30 to 45 minute commute using the VRE. I've been taking the Metro from McLean but what killed me is the wait I had to get to the metro and especially getting back. (Waiting on the shuttle service from the hotel has been rough and time consuming to say the least. I walked back last night from the metro station as my wait was going to be about 45 minutes. I'm about 2 to 2.5 miles away but DANG was it cold last night. around 15 degrees. I hoofed it. (Wouldn't want to do that much but I was cold and walking I knew would warm me up. I've been getting fat(er) since being here.) At the VRE I can park my car for free. I will be less than 2 miles away so I shouldn't have near the commute time. What I found out is sitting for 30 minutes is less stress than driving for 30 minutes but to each his own. It is definitely different.

Lorton is an ok area; glad you found a place. I lived on Belvoir while there. Hopefully the "Mixing Bowl" isn't so bad now.

"Mixing Bowl"?

It's where Interstates 95, 395 and 495 meet. It has consistently ranked as one of the top 10 traffic jams in the country for several years. If you can take Route 1 to DC then by all means avoid I-395.

Thanks, I'll be taking the VRE.
