I read an article by someone who worked media relations at State. She discussed how good the Russians are at manipulating the press, and controlling the message. She admitted how her team were beaten by them often. She said that she knew that Putin was setting expectations for the meeting with Trump by not bringing up the Ukraine, and that Trump's camp failed at even attempting to control the expectations of the meeting in the press. This allowed Putin to "drag his feet" and not be forced to address any meaningful issues outside of Syria (which was obviously going to be discussed). And that by stating to the press that there is ambiguity on the Russian meddling issue, Trump allowed an opening that Putin could state after the meeting that Trump accepts the Russian position that they did not attempt to interfere in the election....ultimately closing the door on the question from Putin's perspective. The US threw away a substantial chip in the geopolitical poker game....willingly.
