Did you guys watch that game? Best B1G game of the year by far. The stare down, the comeback. It had it all. What an amazing noon game.

MSU had some critical turnovers late.

In the last 3 minutes Iowa overcame a couple of bad calls plus another technical on Fran.

One of the greatest comebacks you’ll ever see.

They did not handle Iowa’s end of game full court pressure well at all.

Sparty went small when Rebraca for Iowa fouled out and it completely changed the defense for them. Once Iowa went completely small with just wings and guards, game went from a B1G up and down contest, to AAU/Jersey Shore summer league. You can't abandon the paint defense and allow all of those paint points and put backs. Sparty is really missing the typical wing defensive players they usually have at least 2 of on their roster and Iowa went bonkers.

Left with 9 point SParty lead about 80 seconds left, lol.

The stare down was a BS move imo.

I thought it was humorous. And it’s ok to have some characters in the game. It always has and there’s no reason we need every coach to be the same.

Fran is a damn good coach. Their out of bounds stuff is great and they constantly get shots for their shooters in big moments.

Iowa will always be a bad matchup for Rutgers.because of the 3 point shooters and the uptempo offense.Yes, their defense stinks but the offense can generate points at a fast pace which demoralizes opponents.Michigan State played their best offensive game of the season and still loss.

59 points by both teams in 2nd half

Anyone still think concentrating on defense wins you games

Im looking at scores all over the country in 80s and 90s fror winning teams
Well yes. For example, in this game, either team could have won by giving up fewer than 59 points in the 2nd half.

The offense/defense debate might be the dumbest thing in the history of sports. Giving up fewer or scoring more.. it has exactly the same effect.

Whats our scoring average
Higher than our points allowed average..

If our scoring average went up, or our points allowed average went down, the effect on winning is the same. 60-45 is a win, 100-85 is a win, 110-111 is a loss

Obviously there is more low hanging fruit for improvement on the offense

Yes, Schiano still thinks that defense wins. The mental gymnastics going on between his ears is Comaneci-caliber.

People arguing about offense or defense, how about we just get a good offense AND a good defense?

You hit the nail on the head. This silly argument reminds me of the team culture vs. talent argument I saw here not long ago. It's pretty obvious the best teams year to year have all of the above, and with his culture of hard work, defense, rebounding and plain old grinding in place, all Pike needs to do is up the overall talent level, and we'll be one of those top teams on a year to year basis. We're well on our way, despite the recent setbacks.

If Pike’s teams work so hard, why do we lose? Barely even trying imo

You don’t lose three out of four by “working hard”

Izzo kicking himself for not fouling last three. The way that Iowa got hot after the first two I know it’s against conventional wisdom to stop the clock but maybe foul last two?

Should have been a T. I was absolutely stunned it wasn't.
I believe coach Chaney at Temple did similar. Never got called for it

It would be tough to call a T on it

Coaches always look disgusted with the officials during a game , then it becomes a matter of if it was too long a stare

Another egregious coaching error not executing a foul correctly up 3

I don’t see the coaching error.
When is MSU supposed to foul here?
Iowa got the shot off with around 5 to 6 seconds left? The defender had a blunder with his coverage, but this isn’t a coaching error.
Iowa knew MSU might foul so they go into their offense fast.

Hack on the dribble handoff
Two things, one the defender screwed up and didn’t fight over the screen… so that’s not a coaching blunder.
Two, that foul would come with about 6 seconds left. We’ve seen what happens when you foul to soon

The defender did go over the screen

You can also foul to prevent a good look and disrupt the play. It's not only about fouling at the perfect time in terms of time left on the clock. It's a different situation here vs just fouling when someone is dribbling up the court

Houser probably needed to step up there

The off ball defender went under the screen when he clearly should have switched and defended the shooter receiving the pass. That’s the defender I’m referring to.
The point is you’re saying foul to disrupt a good look, but Iowa got the shot off early. Fouling with 6 or 7 seconds is too early. We all know this because we’ve seen what happens when you foul too early and miss free throws. You can’t ignore the clock in this

When you say the defender went under the screen that terminology is always used for the on ball defender. The off ball defender isn't being screened so he can't go under or over the screen

But yes Hauser needs to hedge or just switch there. You could potentially blame that on coaching. If I'm Izzo I want Hauser stepping up on that and forcing a pass to McCaffery but we don’t know what they are coached to do there
