74/86/87/91/96/2011/2013/2016/2018/2021What years did Murphy win state championships? Total of 10?
If not for probation they would have had another in 92. They destroyed the eventual state champ Robbinsville. I’m sure this post will pull BK out of hiding
I figured surely this would do the trick. That usually gets a rapid response when it comes to the 92 season.
True but they also won a few by slim margins too. They lost the 94 title game 7-6 (North Edgecombe), the 2010 title game 22-21 (WRH), and the 2012 title game 20-15 (Plymouth). That’s a total of seven points. A break here and a bounce there and they could very easily have three more.
To me the 1970 and 1992 teams are the forgotten teams of Murphy football. In 1970 for some strange reason they didn't crown a state champion. They had a Western and an Eastern State Champion. That is why the media will say Murphy has 10 state titles instead of 11, but say that to someone on that 1970 team and you will get a very different response. The 1992 went 10-0 and yes beat the eventual state champion, Robbinsville, 41-0 in the mud bowl. I am biased because I was a senior on that team but I'm not sure many teams would go undefeated knowing they couldn't go to the playoffs. It was a special group of players that accomplished something many didn't think we would be motivated enough to do. Lucky for us the principal at that time and a former coach on the 1970 team, the late Bob Hendrix, provided us with some motivation. He came down on the firat day of practice and said if we went 10-0, the school would buy us shirts, rings and would hang our picture with the other state champions. And before anyone else chimes in and says the school bought us fake state championship rings, the school bought us Smoky Mountain Conference Championship rings because that was the only championship we had the opportunity to win that year. That ring has more meaning to me than my 1991 State Championship ring. It was stolen from my college apartment in 1995 and I had it replaced about 15 years later. The school did buy us shirts and they did hang our picture with the other state champions. However, the picture did not have any sort of plaque on it and when the gym was renovated the picture was eventually tucked away in a corner above a vending machine. I haven't been to the gym in several years but I think there was even some sort of monitor hanging near it that kind of blocks it. I am very interested to see what they plan to do with all of the trophies and pictures once consolidation happens and if they change the name of the school. I don't want all of that stuff to end up in the Cherokee County landfill.Where ther others such as 70 that was mentioned? I’m working on a couple different projects around SMC and want to include the early accomplishments as well.
It is sad as dominant as Murphy as been but ..they will end up like the Sylva Websters, Plymouth, West Montgomery, etc. They will be a forgotten memory. Cherokee County should devote an entire room of the new school to Murphy, Andrews and HDs sports accomplishments. Maybe have it beside the new gym so visitors could go in and out during games in the gymTo me the 1970 and 1992 teams are the forgotten teams of Murphy football. Serious ? What was the exact reason Murphy couldn’t play in the playoffs that year?To me the 1970 and 1992 teams are the forgotten teams of Murphy football.
