Rocco is one of the more decisive QB's we've had in years IMHO.

I'm not worried about Hansen, however, I really like the series where Peoples was running in between the tackles with authority. They never really came back to him inside though.

After years of begging for Wideouts these 3 are fine.

OL will get better. Goodman is a pup still and all good OL's need cohesion so they need time.

Head scratcher will clock on the score though. Thank God they score or ths board would be Franklin BS on steroids.

I was disappointed on the other side of the ball.

No real sustained pressure from DE's. If you want to be with the big boys in college football, it starts with DE's that are terrors.
DT's were disappointing. Temple playing with 3 new OLineman and they pushed us around at times. No sustained "push" on pass rush.
LB's will be fine, DB will be fine, couple missed tackles but it is early.

Biggest takeaway for me is defensive is average at best.

Glanville can't just cut a break and he would have been, most likely, the disruptive type DE that all good defenses have.
That’s two season ending injuries in as many seasons; I’m sorry but you can’t count on him and it’s probably time to move on from him. In this era of play for pay, if you’re never available to play, then it’s time to cut the cord.

DL and OL were two pre-season areas of concern. Hansen is a dependable, but unspectacular, RB. He runs like a FB so it will be rare for him to get more than 3-4 yds per carry.

This team has some definite weaknesses....8-4 is my expectation.

Needed a game like this. Becht got hot after a couple of shaky red zone trips. Penn State punted once. Obviously have things to clean up. DT's need more disruption. DE's need more pressure. LB's need better gap fills. On the whole, the defense game plan seemed pretty vanilla. Maybe, more happening than this untrained eye could see. Seemed more reactive than proactive. Offensively, took a while to establish an identity. Right now, pass first, may be the strength. Would like to see more "road grading" from the offensive line.

I'm not comparing this to last year. Last year, should have been a title contender. This team is projected anywhere between 8-4 and 10-2. Hoping to see continued progression.

I feel better today than most Oregon fans. OK State should have just iced it. Oklahoma looked terrible today. I know Michigan has a quality defense, but Mateer was awful.

That is the new standard for this program. The mushy middle and trips to the Pinstripe Bowl. Campbell will have teams and players that resemble closely the Paterno era but in this era of college football that will not lead to any relevance nationally. Thank you Pat Kraft.

Oregon, the preseason #2 team in the country, just lost to Oklahoma State, a team that had lost 12 games in a row, and some PSU fans are fretting over a game in which they easily could’ve won by 30 or more points on the road if two or three additional plays had been executed better. As far as sleepy noon non-con performances go, this was better than most after the first quarter.

This PSU team probably isn’t a NC caliber team, but it appears to be a pretty deep team at most positions. I’ve liked what I’ve seen overall with the passing game, and hopefully the running game will get better.

I know that a lot of newbies on this board weren’t even alive in 1994, but that PSU team, which IMO should claim a NC and had one of the best offenses in the history of college football, played Temple at Franklin Field and relatively struggled in the first half, and this PSU team isn’t as good as that PSU team and Temple might be a fairly competitive team this season with a coach who has a track record of winning.

I was disappointed that Martin didn’t get a carry. Hansen is solid and he runs hard but he’ll never be a threat to break a long run and he has average hands. Defense wasn’t flying around like they were week 1 and tackling wasn’t nearly as good.

We’ll be fine though. We’re ranked #16 and that’s probably where we deserve to be. Rocco is an upgrade at QB and our receivers are as good as they’ve been in a while. This is a 9-3 type team that could knock off a good team if our offense gets hot.

I agree with you about the defense not playing fast like they did last week. However, and I know about the competition, they’ve only given up nine points in two games.

I don’t think the OL got pushed around like some say. I think the RB just doesn’t quite hit the hole as quickly as needed. The DL was ok, held the LOS fine on 90+% of plays, just got little pressure outside of about 6 plays. Take away the two long runs by the quarterback and the stats look very good. I’m assuming that on those plays, Rojas was not spying or whoever’s assignment that was, they bit on the fake.

Agree about the DL. That will not win B1G games. Other concern for me is no credible outside rushing threat from Hansen and Peoples was only run outside one time. Why did Martin and Wallace get no PT today in the backfield? Was there any mention on the radio?

Wallace did get some carries and Martin definitely was in uniform. Those two should get the bulk of the carries next week if things go right.

Martin had his helmet on and was lurking around the coaches most of the game looking like he wanted in. Maybe he’s fumbled in practice or is in the doghouse for some reason. I just think he has the most potential of the RBs. He’s as big as Hansen and is more explosive. I like Wallace but he’s clearly the #4 from my perspective.

That is true. Temple has played us tough since the 70's I think we might have had a 2 pt win in '78. Wayne Harding was not a bad coach.
Also in the '94 game I think Kijana had his hand in a cast.

I’m sorry that I hurt your feelings by saying that a player who can’t stay healthy no longer should be a priority player and definitely not allocated any precious NIL money. This isn’t even a decade ago; you only have so much NIL money to spend, and I certainly wouldn’t spend any more on it on a player who now will have played one game in the last two seasons; that’s called Real Football as in Realpolitik. It probably will be a moot issue anyway because I’d be shocked if he ever plays another down of football at PSU.

The reality is that Hansen is not rb1 or rb2. He cannot make low level defenders miss. He will be smothered by conference defenses. Campbell needs to come to terms with the fact that the strength of this offense is the passing game.
Went to the game and it was likely 2/3 PSU fans. It was fun despite the lackluster performance.

Our run game is suspect. They'll have to improve a lot to be successful against Wisconsin, Michigan, and Washington.

DTs are average at best and now we've lost Granville at DE. This will likely be a problem against top opponents.

Bacon & Ebel were impressive vs Marshall but neither showed much today vs Temple.

Yes to your comment on Martin. I was at the game and don't know why Martin DNP. On Becht, that play in the red zone where he clearly crossed the LOS and then passed, he knows he should have just run out of bounds and the ball would have been on the two yard line. Where is the outside running game?
Surprised Barker missed that early FG.
Team seemed lethargic in the first half.

I attended that game. The stadium personnel were so unorganized we missed the whole 1st quarter before we got into the stadium. As I remember we were behind. But we came back with a vengeance. I remember a long td passes from Collins to Scott. Kajana Carter injured his hand in that game. That 1994 team offense was fun to watch for sure.

Random musings...

-Didn't need that backdoor TD at the end.
-Disappointed that Q didn't see any time out there. I'm not impressed with Hansen's vision. It's like he follows the play script to a T and doesn't look to bounce anywhere. Had 2 plays where a simple scoot to the right would have netted a bigger play.
-Very clunky start reminded me of too many noon games of the past decade. Still a little PTSD from that.
-Sowell's gotta be better at contested targets. Should've had a TD in the 2nd quarter.
-Defense seemed like they weren't concerned with Temple's RB's but didn't have a decent eye on the QB running.
-No turnovers for the 2nd straight week. That never hurts.
-Keeler's a pretty decent coach. Down 20-3 with 11:00 left at his own 40 and he's punting it away? Essentially gave up on the game with that and PSU went right down and scored to erase any doubt. If I'm a Hooters fan, that decision would be very disappointing.
-Really like Becht's poise and patience. Seemed a bit rattled on the redzone possessions (playcalling a bit suspect IMO) and the OL didn't give him much help.
-Yes they scored but the time management on the 2:00 drive at end of first half bugged me. Still had two timeouts left and if Brahmer doesn't score, they were looking at FG at best. Moot point, of course, but maybe some more of previous life's PTSD.

Overall, it's a game that many say is a coach's dream -- you get out of there with a win and you're 2-0 but there's so many things you can improve on and nobody can sit on their laurels after the impressive opening last week. On to Buffalo, which should be a glorified scrimmage after the Bulls got whacked by FIU tonight.

I agree. But it won't be because a kid made of glass stepped on a pebble and tore his acl yet again. It will be because we have a few too many holes in the team: Not good enough on both sides of scrimmage, no running back threat, and unable to contain running QBs.
