Never been to Myrtle Beach but thinking about going for spring break. My only concern is the weather for the last week of March (will it be too cold). To the people that's been to Myrtle Beach what is your general take/opinion about the area? We usually go to Florida for spring break but the wife wanted to go somewhere different this year. Would love like to hear your recommendations on any good seafood restaurants. I love fried seafood but my wife like grill so any place that do both really well would be idea or any good restaurants including breakfast places that I should try.

Last time there I stumbled on a beach shop that was going out of business. Got a shirt and noodle for the whole family.

As w/ most popular vacation spots, there are good and bad. Do your research, read reviews, etc. MB is more commercialized than it used to be so either gravitate towards the north side or head down towards Pawley's Island if you want something less intense. If you play golf, then there are a boatload of nice tracks.

It's Pigeon Forge at the beach. If you like that sort of thing, then you'll be happy. If you want something more relaxing and boring there are better options.
For relaxing and boring the best place we have been to was Mexico Beach in Florida. It's on the panhandle and not commercialized with high rise condos and hotels. The only downside is you have to drive 30 minutes to Panama City to eat. I haven't been there in a few years but heard Hurricane Michael in 2018 pretty much wiped the whole town out.

That's true. You can only eat at "Killer Seafood" a finite amount of time.

This. You can pretty much go anywhere in the world for the cost of going to pigeon forge or Myrtle Beach. If that's your thing, that's fine. But just an fyi

I like Myrtle Beach, but I would prefer to go about anywhere else on Spring Break. JMO. It was great last time we went on Fall Break, though.

The main part of MB was pretty terrible last year. We took the kids for the first time and it was my wife and my first time since we were children. It was shocking to us how run down that place is. North Myrtle looked quite a bit better.

OP, if you go to MB, you have a 1 in 10 chance of being a crime victim. So, you should just stay in your hotel room for your own safety.

The way you all describe MB it seems like it's a 💩 hole. Maybe I should go to the Bahamas instead.

You're trying to choose between MB and the Bahamas? I hope this is sarcasm.

But seriously, MB is fine.......it's just chock full of people, shopping, shows, restaurants, etc, etc, etc. Some people love the tons of traffic and attractions.......some people don't.

Myrtle Beach, aka the Redneck Riviera.
I'm only 3 hours from North Myrtle. Been there probably a dozen times on spring or fall golf trips, last year I took my 2 teenage boys there in August, and been a few other times too.
Are you talking early, mid, or late March? It can be warm, or a bit chilly, just depends. Water would still be cold, but kids may be ok w/ it but not for long periods.
Lots of golf courses, restraunts, shopping, and putt-putt.
As for seafood, you can find it there of course, and being close to NC (Calabash), Calabash style (fried) is prevalent, but you can find grilled too. When we went last summer, we went ocean fishing w/ a guide for 4 hours, then took our catch to local restraunt where they cooked it for us and gave us sides and drinks for $10/each.

The drive is also worth noting. Isle of Palms, Folly, Hilton Head, etc. All are shorter and much easier drives. The problem with MB's drive is that you have to get off on little 2 lane roads that everyone in their uncle are trying to drive as well. It really bogs down the drive time.

I live in Nashville was going to fly. Southwest had direct flights and attractive rates.

I would like to go to the Bahamas but the cost is outside of our budget at this time. I'm planning on visiting Bahamas in 2024 but that will be with me and the wife.

It's worth it.

I grew up in Middle Tennessee.......I think most people from that area go to Panama City Beach since it's the quickest drive from there. MB is quite a bit like PCB in that it's a crowded strip with tons of putt-putt and shopping......though MB is more grown up and commercialized with Pigeon Forge shows and attractions.

MB is a dump. Its called the redneck riviera by most. Charleston is beautiful, isle of palms, Hilton Head, Edisto, all good for vacation.....Myrtle is a chit hole unless youre there for a bachelor party or you're 19.

And check out the average temps in March. Its cold, way too cold to get in any pool or ocean.

Fly into Wilmington and do topsail, Carolina, Kure, or Emerald Isle.

So much better and lot less crowded.
I would suggest obx but new bern would be closest airport
Very true. But I wasn't wanting to say it, so less crowded. The NC OBX are the best beach place in the East Coast to vacation.
Sunset Beach is great if you have little kids, because the water depth stays flat for a good bit.
Whereas Kure Beach has a quick dropoff near the shoreline.
Carolina Beach is closest to restraunts since right by Wilmington.
But I may like Topsail and North Topsail the best.
Once you get north of Hatteras the water gets cooler.

I imagine flights to New Bern, Wilmington, Myrtle Beach are all not cheap. I'd fly into here (Raleigh, RDU a lot cheaper flight) where the OBX is only a 2-4 hour drive.

Hilton Head is the best if you want to avoid insane traffic and a calmer atmosphere. Pricey though. Charleston is awesome but all of the transplants that have migrated there are quickly ruining it. Myrtle Beach has its place being affordable and having more of that “fun park” atmosphere to it but you have to time it right. Savannah is a really cool place to visit.

I would recommend North Myrtle or South of Myrtle (Surfside/Garden City/Murrells Inlet).

I wouldn't stay in Myrtle itself. JMHO.

We never do any of the attractions there, so cannot comment. Golf is great, beaches clean, etc. No complaints from me, we've been able to find some great restaurants too.

Been to MB dozens of times. Have yet to find a really good restaurant except in Charleston and South. We've gotten rave reviews for many restaurants in the MB area and all of them were mediocre. Best meals we've had were from chains, tbh.

Tons of good golf courses. Beaches are really nice although crowded at times. NMB and Charleston and South of there are best bets to miss the crowds and find good food.

How's the second Ave pier holding up Doc? I've caught some serious Spanish mackerel off that pier along with plenty of belt fish or ribbon fish. Thanks (At one time the hurricane damaged it.) We were there after that but they hadn't fixed it.

Still not fixed, we were there during the Sept hurricane and saw part of the Cherry Grove pier go floating by. Rode out the storm from a 3rd floor ocean front condo.

Brought a whole new meaning to walking on the water

Myrtle used to be the Redneck Riviera but now it’s the Thug capital. Shootouts between gangs in the middle of the strip. I guess it’s a good meeting spot along the east coast for drug trafficking.

A few years ago a friend of mine got a really good offer from the MBPD and he took it. I told him at the time, you have a good gig here, and MB has gotten a rep as a terrible place for crime.

He stayed one year and came back. Said it was just horrible and not worth the extra money. (Not to mention the higher cost of living)

Ya it will be freezing.

I know you mentioned the Bahamas are out of your price range. Did you consider all inclusive? Unless it's a large spring break week, can't imagine much price difference in the two and you would save money on the meals
What all inclusive Bahamas have you done? Would like to try it sometime. We usually do Dominican Republic and really like it but would like to try something different next time.

I've only done Cancun and Dr. Always went riu. Food was mediocre but everything else really good especially for the price.

I have looked at prices for the Bahamas and they are comparable

Places I have looked at in Dominican have doubled or tripled in price from earlier this year to now or sometime next year from what I have seen. I hope at some point they come back down but I’m afraid like everything else that has gone up due to X, businesses will not drop prices when X goes back down.
