I know we all are saying Nance is gone after this season, but couldn’t he technically come back due to the COVID year?

Not saying he should or he would, but doesn’t he have that option if he wants it? This may have been discussed, but if so, I missed it.

Yes. The only player on the roster who has exhausted his eligibility is Williams. Everyone else could potentially come back next season.

I think he comes back if they get traction and are seeing upside next year

Gone to where? He’s not getting drafted.

Now you’re just trolling. Gone to play in Europe obviously. Or perhaps the G-League. He’ll no doubt get a chance to show his stuff in the NBA Summer league.
Yup, or even the portal. If we finish on one of our patented losing streaks to end the season maybe he takes his NU degree, thanks the coaches and transfers to a team that's a lock to make the tourney just to have that experience. There is not a player of his calibre who hasn't thought about what it would be like to play in March Madness.

Nance will probably be marginally out of draft boards. And, therefore, good chance he returns to give himself a chance of showing some more improvement and make the 2023 draft. Will that be at NU? No idea. Transferring has to be into a team that makes sense to showcase one's ability. Marcus Carr was just marginally out of draft consideration. Transferred to Texas and probably overestimated his own ability to stand out. Having a poor season.

Do we know if Pete is set to graduate on time?
Same question regarding Ryan Young...

I think that matters a lot.

Matt Nicholson wants to know.

Carr is an interesting example. He played "fine" (10 pts, 4 assists) last night in Texas's big win over #8 Kansas. Texas is going to play in March and looks like a Sweet 16 team. By contrast, Minnesota is a dumpster fire this year and will finish last or second to last in the BIG. Yeah, he would have put points with them, but does playing at Texas in national games and on the biggest stages increase draft stock? I honestly don't know. I would assume there has to be a little bit of out of sight out mind with scouts/NBA teams and the Gophers are not even remotely close to being relevant.

Those are all valid points.

I believe Carr thought he would still be putting up big numbers at Texas. Not as high as at MN, but for sure better than what we are seeing. Or, if he was going to go from 19.4 to 11 ppg, his field goal percentage would improve. It didn't.

Of course the choice was not Texas or staying at MN. There were plenty of other options. Dude was, without a doubt, one of the 3 top transfers available.

Come on man, take it easy on the Gophers! We still have to play them twice!

Fwiw, they are 2-9 in the Big Ten, but their remaining schedule is
2 vs NU, 2 vs PSU, at NEB, at MD, host INDY, host WIS, at OSU.

We are not certain to do better than a split.

FWIW the Gophers faithful are quite happy with what is happening this season. They were supposed to be doormats and have been surprisingly feisty. While having no bench whatsoever. This after retaining a grand total of one scholarship player.

Ben Johnson has done a nice job with that team. They had some good wins in the nonconference and I watched them handle Michigan At Ann Arbor. Lack of a bench is a killer though when you are playing two tough games every week. I hope CCC's liberal use of the bench will pay big dividends in these late season games.

Yeah, the ratings have them grouped with Maryland, Penn State, Rutgers. Well below NU, but so far we're only 2-2 against that group.

Would he have been a 2nd round pick if he had stayed in the draft? He definitely could have played in Europe or the G-League.

If you asked Carr about the transfer I bet he would say all the right things and that he's happy to be winning and playing on ESPN in big games (did you see the atmospehere for Chris Beard's return when Texas played Texas Tech? it was insane), living in Austin is great etc. BUT I'm sure deep down he's concerned that he may have hurt his draft stock. If he plays a part in a deep tourney run, then he'll be back on track. He's the type of guy who can get hot in March.

You're only saying that because we're Northwestern. That team that clobbered Nebraska in Lincoln should roll the Gophers. I get where you coming from though, I've also been burned countless times by NU, but we genuinely seem more talented than Minny and Nebraska and we're playing well. We should sweep those games.

I heard while seeing a bit of a TX game the commentator saying Carr told me he went to Austin to win games. While that's the official, out to the world, version, I believe it's more likely the reality is closer to what you pointed out. He must be questioning his choice.

I believe he declared for the draft and, like some many do, after hearing feedback, heard there was a good change his name was not going to be called, and decided to return. Returning is, IMO, for a borderline guy, a superior option over playing in the G League or overseas. The road to the NBA is much harder when not drafted.

Is there a doubt that they're not on track to graduate?
I'm just asking because it is Ryan Young's 4th year of college, as well as Pete Nance's 4th year.

If I'm Young and I have the credits to graduate, am I automatically staying to play basketball? Even if I want a graduate degree, do I automatically decide to stay at NU?

Nance is somewhat different, because he has a much better chance to make basketball his career for awhile.

I suppose Greer is in the same boat as Young.

Those are all good questions. I think much of this will depend on how we finish the season. Do we go 6-2 and win a game in the BTT? If so, then maybe they feel like they have unfinished business and want to make one last run at the tourney. If we go on another swoon and limp to the finish line, Greer and Young may want to move on with their lives instead of "pounding the rock" for another year and Nance may want to showcase his talents on a bigger stage (he would have tons of suitors).

Yeah - your comment made it pop into my head that Nance would probably start on Illinois and Purdue, at the 4, his natural position.

If he can start for those teams, he can start almost anywhere.

Still no guarantee he is NBA material.

Talked to a scout I know from the Knicks tonight and he said Nance was not on the NBA's radar. He also said Kofi and Indiana's center have limited value because their game doesn't have any range. NBA is dominated by teams that can pour in the threes.

Won’t shock me to see Kofi back at Illinois again next year. He can develop a little more and probably make more in NIL than playing somewhere overseas

the days of being a lottery pick just because you are 7’ are definitely gone

If everybody who can come back does come back, I think next season could actually be pretty special.
I think Nance would do well to come back for this reason. All they have to do is be mature enough to flip the close games that they lost this year to get into the tourney. Plus, physically I think he just coming into himself. He is a late bloomer if ever there was one.

Right, he isn’t anything close to a lottery pick. Great college player, dominates, but he isn’t making it up and down the court 6 times in the NBA before he is gassed.

I had not seen J-D play before. He is explosive but is a card carrying member of the Bricklayers Union
