Back at the Chicago Street Course this weekend. Hopefully weather won't be an issue like the past two seasons. Suarez will be looking for a new ride in 2006. Let go at the end of the year at Trackhouse. They would be smart to bring Conor Zilisch, already in the organization part-time.

They should be racing at Daytona under the lights on July 4th weekend. Not this Chicago street course crap.
Absolutely. Bring back the Firecracker 400. Throwback paint schemes at Darlington better fit the nostalgia in the Southern 500 on Labor Day rather than in the spring.

Not a surprising outcome. I figured once Pitbull left Trackhouse Racing that Suarez's days would be numbered. 2 wins and 2 playoff appearances in 9 seasons. He drove for SHR during their peak, in the #19 at Gibbs replacing Carl Edwards, and currently with Trackhouse. They are no HMS, but teams like Spire Motorsports and Trackhouse Racing are respectable organizations.

The street races need to stop and this is from a guy that loves Road Course racing. The track is too narrow and there is almost no room to pass. With the lanes being so tight and the barriers in place the track will look like a pinball machine at times. Expect a caution fest today

And Thunderstorms are expected between 3-5. Maybe that will at least create some strategy regarding which tires to use.

Chicago Street Course sucks but it’s not nearly as bad as the Detroit Grand Prix course.

Spot on. This pile up collecting all of the cars after Hocevar tagged the wall is a prime example. I never got behind the street course. This is one event if NASCAR can't finish in time before darkness sets in, they cut the race short while the city has to prepare to go back to its regular setting.

I wasn't familiar with The Detroit Grand Prix so I went to YouTube and saw that it's an Indy Car Race. I have nothing against Indy I just probably haven't watched a race since Tony Stewart and Robby Gordon were in open wheel.

Lots of opinions on the Detroit Grand Prix in the comments though.

However, YouTube did lead me to a short clip of Santino Ferrucci and I got dragged into the Rabbit Hole watching that clown.

It’s a trash track. Almost no passing zones and the track is very narrow.

Man i really wanted to hate the race but I found myself watching it from start to finish for the most part. I recorded it and started about an hour and a half late so I could breeze through the commercials and boring parts. There was some decent racing but it was all behind the leader and not for the lead. I hadn't really followed the Bowman/Bubba beef but that reared it's ugly head late in the race.

SVG is just a machine on Road Courses. Sonoma is a much different race. I'm not rooting against him but I think we will have a different winner there next week.

SVG is unstoppable on the street courses. On traditional road courses he hasn’t shined as bright.

Well I'm hoping someone else gets to the Winners Circle next week. Nothing at all against SVG but just to mix things up a little. I've had a hunch that Kyle Busch is going to break his slump on a Road Course. He ran a heck of a race today but was spun out and had a speeding penalty. I think Larson and Byron will be hard to beat next week.

Regarding SVG on Road Courses he's still been pretty darn good imo. Won Mexico City this year and 2nd The Glen last year. Xfinity wins at Portland, Sonoma and Watkins Glen.

Im sure most folks are ready to get back to an Oval, we've got Dover in 2 weeks, but Sonoma may be my favorite race of the year. Unpopular opinion i know ✌️

It was nice to see this race playout without weather on the street course. I don't mind rain on a road course once in a while for a change of pace, and see the different strategies come in to play. I hated to see McDowell have mechanical issues that ruined his day. He was fast out there early on. There is definitely some ongoing tension between those two that seems to reach a boiling point on road and street courses over the years. Some rivalries brewing this summer with Bowman/Bubba, and Stenhouse/Hocevar. Looking forward to Sonoma next weekend! Who do you think is the favorite there? I would love to see #5 go back to victory lane again. Trackhouse has some good drivers in their organization for road racing. SVG, Chastain and Suarez even have road course wins for them, and the development driver Zilisch. It would have been cool to see Trackhouse field the #87 for him today.

Chicago and Mexico City are considered street courses. He’s 3/4 on wins thus far. Outside of either venue for road courses he’s not won a Cup race.

I think Larson is due and Byron is always tough on the Road Courses even though he's had a run of bad luck. Those are the two i would expect to be at the top. Pit strategy always plays a big role at Sonoma so that can always mix things up. McDowell is always in the mix at Road Courses and I think he could have won yesterday but man that was brutal bad luck.

I'm with you I would like to have seen Zilisch entered yesterday, especially since he will likely be moved into the 99 next year. Chastain seems due to breakthrough on a Road Course soon.

It would be really cool if there were a group of Road Course Ringers but it seems like those days are done for now.

Those road course ringers back in the day were exciting to see come in and give these smaller teams a chance for a good finish who would not otherwise run up front. It was fun to watch Juan Pablo Montoya come back last year at Watkins Glen. I saw the entry list for Sonoma, no Zilisch again. Penske would field a 4th entry part-time for Cindric at these road courses before we went full-time in the Cup Series.

Man that's a lot to unpack there. Why do you think Chicagoland failed the first go around?
I also thought Auto Club/Fontana always had ook racing. It probably would have been better to keep them at one race a year. I believe it's completely gone now.

So in summary next year Nascar MIGHT race at:
Chicagoland (oval)
Chicago Street Course. Contract is up but Nascar has an option for 2 more years.
San Diego (Street Course)
Mexico City (Road Course) - Nascar under contract for 2 more years but reading between tge lines it seems up in the air
Montreal (Road Course) since Nascar wants to go to Canada. Is this the only option North of the border?

I went over and looked at the entry list and it looked the same as if they were racing at Homestead or Pocono. No surprises. I miss tge days of having a Boris Said, Max Pappas, Ron Fellows, Scot Pruett..etc..

Im with you in that i have no clue why Trackhouse wouldn't enter Zilisch and let him get more experience and exposure. Makes no sense.

Xfinity entries are equally as normal. I think 60 something Boris raced Sonoma in Xfinity last year. No such luck this year. Seems like they could at least find some random Aussie Supercar Driver or something lol.

That was fun to see Boris said race at COTA a few years ago, and that Sonoma race last year you mentioned with HMS giving him a good opportunity in the #17. It was a blast from the past seeing him and JPM in 2024. The emphasis on playoff points, along with NASCAR’s rule that drivers won’t receive a waiver for missing a race unless it’s due to something beyond their control, has definitely limited opportunities for traditional road course ringers. Fewer open slots than in years before to race their way in. Many of the younger drivers are much more proficient in road racing these days than the older generation was.

The Open Exemption Provisional would allow for one of those guys to come in if a team wanted to field an entry without a charter for them. They do not get points if they use the OEP. If teams can get the sponsorship and bring an expert road racer like Montoya or Jenson Button for a Top 10-15, run a clean race, then it is worth it IMO for R&D purposes and sponsorship visibility. If I were RWR, I wouldn't hesitate bringing in Button for a race as they have done in the past and Cody Ware sit out. Knowing how Zilisch just ran the Cup Race at Atlanta, his road racing experience would have likely increased his odds for a better finish for the select Cup races on his schedule. I assume they are trying to get him more experience on the ovals, especially if he does go Cup racing full-time in 2026. Katharine Legge with her road racing background had a respectable run last week. After spinning out, to come back and finish 19th in Live Fast Motorsports equipment is decent all things considered.

I read back then about the declining attendance and NASCAR wanting to change up the schedule to get away from so many of the cookie-cutter tracks for reasons Chicagoland was dropped. A San Diego street course may be the way to go for this form of racing if NASCAR continues with street courses. Changes up the schedule and back in the California market. We were fortunate the weather held off this past weekend. San Diego good weather year-round. The plans to turn California into a short track have stalled. Destroyed a fine racetrack, didn't finish the job, and this is what is looks like now. Auto Club ruins : r/NASCAR They have a few different options for venues in Canada if they expand there in the Cup Series. NASCAR has some history with the Xfinity Series racing at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal. Also, they used to Truck Series ran at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park not too long ago.

Thanks man. Appreciate your perspective. I remember going to San Diego for vacation 7-8 years ago. It was in August. I flew out of Austin and it was 104 degrees. Landed in San Diego it was 66. I felt like I was going to freeze to death 🙃 . There are a bunch of sunny days and picturesque locations so maybe it would be ok. I'm still not sure Street Racing is the best option but I guess we'll see.

Its honestly depressing as hell to think that Auto Club went from This... 4 wide!

I completely forgot about the new rules which make it much more difficult to field a different driver for select races. I bet some of the drivers hate driving the Road Courses so it sure would be nice if Teams could bring in a "pinch hitter" for a race.

You're right about the younger drivers. They seem much more prepared for Road Courses than in the past. I still put the over/under for Hocevar Spins at 4 for this weekend though 😅

I can imagine with that near 40-degree difference, 66 degrees did feel like a cool, fall day compared to Austin, TX. 66 degrees in SD for the drivers sounds like a good racing temperature. I thought the temps in Mexico for June were going to be an issue with drivers getting heat exhaustion, but it sounds like more were impacted by dehydration in Chicago and Pocono. Thank you for those photos and that clip from the last race. It is fitting that Kyle Busch's first win with RCR comes in the last race there. It's depressing seeing those warehouses go up in its place. Makes it impossible to ever reverse course and rebuild the track back the way it was. Much like the old Riverside track and Texas World Speedway which had a roval course on its layout. I've seen Auto Club Speedway used in movies and TV shows. Hamlin and Keselowski are saying NASCAR has too many road courses. NASCAR wants to try new things and expand in different locations. Will be interesting to see how this unfolds over the course of the next few years.

So I went down the YouTube Rabbit Hole watching videos about abandoned Race Tracks. Are there any tracks still standing that have had a Cup Race in the last 10 years or so and don't now besides Chicagoland and Kentucky? It seems Kentucky Speedway is hopeless at this point.

I used to live in Houston and remember seeing the Texas World Speedway driving into College Station. Honestly I had no idea what it was until you mentioned it. Did Nascar's support of Texas Motor Speedway kill Texas World?

I guess the number of Road Courses is the million dollar question right now. Taking a look at this year's schedule you have 4 Road Course, 1 Street Race and 1 Roval. The Roval anywhere needs to go. Nobody likes it and it feels manufactured. I'm cool with the Street Races going away. While esthetically pleasing their just not that practical for Nascar. Sonoma has to stay but should be moved to early in the year. I don't think old school fans would hate it as much if it wasn't in the middle of summer. Watkins Glen has to stay. COTA is a unique experience that does bring new fans to the sport. Plus I go every year so it stays. Then I'd like to see a 4th race rotate. Road America, Montreal wherever but keep it out of the summer. Save those dates for the more traditional tracks.

I completely get and respect the opinion of Denny and Brad. Those guys were probably born on a short track. Ovals either dirt or asphalt are in there blood. Those guys are two of the elder statesman of the driver pool. I wish more drivers would speak about it (they probably do). I'd be curious what a Chase Elliott, William Byron, Austin Cindric etc would say.

If you're a Kyle Busch fan I still feel like he's going to break his losing streak on a Road course this year. Just seems like he's due.

The Charlotte Roval needs to go back to the oval race in the fall and never take off the Crown Jewel Brickyard 400 again for their roval. The idea of the street course was cool at first, but we saw how initially the downside to this style of racing. The first two being shortened due to weather which would have had the race finishing late, and they don't have the lights to keep going into the darkness. The city's event permit ends on Sunday night. Chicago has to reopen roads, remove barriers, and return the area to normal city traffic and public access for Monday morning. Not to mention, what you said Sunday about the passing zones, tight corners, walls everywhere. The track is a joke. Road courses offer runoff areas which are more forgiving for driver mistakes.

I think you hit on something there about the timing of the road courses by visiting them at an appropriate time for the weather and potentially increase the chances of road racing bring well-received. Space it out throughout the year. You go 14 weeks, basically all spring in the 1st half without a road course between COTA and Mexico. NASCAR likes to start the year in warmer tracks, they may want to race at Sonoma, Mexico early on like they do COTA and the Daytona roval in Feb 2021 during the pandemic. Richmond losing a 2nd date is the one that bothered me the most with its history. However, if it were to be replaced for an older track like Rockingham back on the schedule, I'd be okay with that.

June 2025 Drone Footage of Auto Club Speedway

Hocevar visiting Chicagoland

Thank you for those videos. It is clear from that; Chicagoland could use a little weed killer and continuing to mow their infield grass. Then, racing could come back there soon. I remember Harvick winning the inaugural race there on my birthday in 2001. I can see NASCAR coming back here to stay in the Chicago market if the street course ends. The Auto Club Speedway one gives a much better view of what is going on there, and their reasoning behind it is sad. Seems like NASCAR had no interest in maintaining the track or fighting for it. It showed Irwindale getting demolished. Also, the old Riverside & Ontario tracks were demolished too. Left the Coliseum for Bowman Gray which is a good move. California has so many options/events going for people to do, it appears they aren't as starved for racing as other places are. It is unfortunate what happened to TWS. They experienced a decline in attendance, underwent multiple ownership changes, and the owners ultimately didn’t find it justifiable to invest in resurfacing the track with the lack of revenue it was bringing in. TWS did not have the modern infrastructure needed to keep up with high-profile track built during NASCAR’s rise in popularity. Like you said, Kentucky/Chicagoland are the only two ovals in the last 10 years that still stand. They also did one at Road America a couple of years ago. Places like Kentucky before they were on the Cup schedule, and TWS were good testing tracks when NASCAR had unlimited testing allowed on tracks that weren't on the current Cup schedule.

If you have Peacock, on Lost Speedways, Dale Jr. visits some abandoned Texas tracks that you may be interested in these episodes. He did one on TWS.

NASCAR needs to start listening to feedback from their older drivers, like they did when Dale Sr. was still around. The vast majority of fans and veteran drivers do not want that many road courses. That is roughly 20 percent of the entire NASCAR schedule. If NASCAR wants road racing in the sport so badly, they should create a division like the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour for these events. I doubt it would be a success. You cannot mold the fan base and old school drivers into something you want them to be when there is a lack of interest as a whole. So many of them are brought up running quarter midgets, sprint cars, and late models. Even kids today like Harvick and Busch's sons. It is apparent that California does not care about racing nearly as much as NASCAR is trying to force themselves into a market that is not hungry for it, based on so many tracks getting torn down.

No matter what NASCAR ends up doing, someone will always be unhappy about the schedule. Whether it is the driver or fans. Rovals, road courses, dirt racing, or pack racing at Atlanta. They will never appease everyone.

Good info thanks. I'll definitely check out the Lost Speedways. Honestly, I've lived in the San Antonio Metro Area since 2015 and had no clue there even was a San Antonio Speedway. Researched and found out it succeeded the Pan American Speedway that closed in 1978.

Before I moved to Texas I was working for a Company out of Cincinnati that had a secondary sponsorship of a car running in the Nascar Slim Jim Series. Driver was named Spanks Overbeck. I have no idea how I remember all of that but one day they were doing Time Testing at Kentucky Speedway and we set up a Hospitality tent on Pit Road. Good times and exactly what you were talking about.

I could see how TMS was the beginning of the end for TWS. I've been to TMS for Nascar three times and it's a great facility. Im not the biggest fan of the racing there but it has a good following and the event is fun.

Found a couple of cool videos of/about the San Antonio tracks
