Ok, that's fine if you want to make the coaching tree argument. But I was responding to the statement "we should have never hired a coach who hadn't won a tourney game." That's a silly statement because there have been several coaches who had little to no tourney success before being hired by a higher tier program and then having said success.
If Pope hadn’t of been a captain for one of our best teams, it’s fair to say he wouldn’t have had a chance at getting this job. Look at his resume before coaching here.

Oats turned us down, Bruce Pearl literally just retired from the sport, Drew turned us down.

That leaves me Tommy Lloyd and Beard. I like both of those choices but Beard has recently been fired, you know Mitch isn't going for that. And Lloyd is at Arizona, which probably has as much resources as we do with half of the pressure. No real reason for him to make the move.

I don't think choosing someone over Pope would have been as easy as people like to think.
When did Oats turn us down, when was he offered and do you have proof of either?

Pass and Jack coach, is 6-5 against UK, 1 final four, 2 elite 8s, 5 SEC championships in 5 years. Pretty damn good.
Yeah…. Right. The one that rejected an offer before one was even made. He’s just another no defense Bennie ball boy that’s got lucky. Tolerates criminals on his club. Real loser, just not quite in Pearls scum class.

Uh sure, he was never offered the job and the AD put out a statement, for recruiting. Calipari recruited Tyreke Evans, after he drove his cousin to kill a man. You still rode for him for 15 years. Ride or die matter of fact.

This guy would kill it at UK, here's an article about him and UK last year.

Just before UConn and Purdue tipped off in the national championship on April 8, Oats and Alabama's Athletic Director, Greg Byrne, released a joint statement announcing Oats would remain in Tuscaloosa and not pursue the Kentucky job.

Oats did mention to Davis, however, that there was some consideration to making the move within the SEC.

"To be even in the conversation -- I mean, the job was never offered to me. It's not -- it didn't get to that point at all," Oats said. "But there was a lot of speculation circulating around the country for a day -- or part of a day there -- that maybe I'd be in the mix. I actually thought about it."

"I think we've got a chance to win a national championship at Alabama, and I think it would mean a lot more winning one here than maybe it would be winning one somewhere where they've won with lots of different coaches over a period of time. It's almost expected at a place like Kentucky. If you don't make the Final Four, they're gonna -- you had a disappointing year, to be honest with you. John Calipari is a pretty good coach. He's won a lot of games. He's won everywhere he's been, and they weren't happy. I mean, he won a national championship. But you expect a Final Four -- which I don't mind. I wouldn't mind having that pressure, to be honest with you. I just think there's part of me that would actually enjoy that to a point because I put a lot of pressure on myself, anyways.

This guy would dominate here. Why he was never offered I have no idea. He has no title and is hungry for one. Already made the final four. 5 SEC titles, 2 elite 8s. How was this not the hire last spring?

100%, we should offer him whatever it takes to get him here if Pope doesn’t right the ship.

His Bama buyout was like 16 million or something, IIRC. That's likely why we never contacted.
I think you misread what Oats said.
I mean, the job was never offered to me. It's not -- it didn't get to that point at all
I am reading this as there were at least 1 discussion - maybe his agent, maybe him personally - it just did not get to the point of an offer.

I don't think I am missing anything. Nothing from his comment implies there was any discussion. You would have to simply read into and make the assumption that there was.

Pretty sure we would need Bama's permission to even speak to him regarding the job, and I have seen nothing that indicates that happened.

Maybe we put put feelers to gauge his interest in leaving Bama, but I highly doubt any substantive talks were had.

Scott Drew and Chris Beard don't really do it for me. I will fully admit that at the time Pope was hired, and maybe even still.. I'd prefer Pope just to see what he can become at a place like Kentucky. His ceiling is higher than both Scott and Beard IMO.

It really seems that Mitch has to go before we can ever get back to being a threat. Has to be done. We won't hire Oats or anyone that has done anything negative in their entire lives..
Putting your own personal beliefs and convictions above what's best for the university is asinine. Mitch needs to go and run a private religious school's athletic department and let the big boys handle things.

You just slurp up that LOD drool. You go on thinking nonsense. Go sit in your pumpkin patch and be really sincere. He ain’t coming. One huge reason…there is no job to come to. Poor baby. It will be ok.

The AD put out a statement for recruiting. Barnhart never looked the dude's way.

And it’s because of the murder that happened, and the fact he continued to play the kid that brought the gun to the crime scene.

I’d take Oats in a heartbeat *IF* Pope doesn’t work out. I’m just telling yall why he didn’t get a look from Mitch.

No way Barnhart even considered oats with the shooting that took place. Know a few guys with road in, said it never happened. Barnhart isn’t going to call a coach in a situation like that. It’s not going to happen.

Oats pulled a Barnes when he knew he wasn’t being looked at. Coaches do this all the time.

Oats would take the UK job immediately most likely. Alabama basketball isn’t even 3rd fiddle in the state. People don’t realize just how powerful the UK job is. “He’s got no pressure”. Exactly. Cal didn’t either. They don’t LIKE THAT. They thrive off pressure. They want it. They want fame, most of the time.

If Mark doesn’t work Mitch isn’t calling the next shot similar to how the Gillispie move stopped him from avoiding Calipari. If Mark doesn’t make it, the buyout isn’t huge anymore, and he’s not been in any trouble since the one off issue at bama. He will be called and he will take it, unless he really wants to coach Michigan state when Izzo hangs it up for whatever reason being he’s connected there and all.

My fear is Self hangs it up and they go after Oats or Beard. Both would kill it with the right brand. Meanwhile we’ve got Mitch Barnhart over here being Mitch Barnhart.

Still in this with Pope. Let’s see what happens. The leash is shorter now, however.

Much like Gillispie, if mark doesn’t work the program will immediately get a protection hire. Barnhart will either be forced, or like happened with Calipari, he will remove himself and step aside to a large degree. Barnhart believes in principles as he sees it. He wasn’t going to have Calipari stain his reputation as a clean AD and so he sat in but didn’t make the call. Barnhart said if Calipari goes south, he didn’t make the hire, so he’s not responsible.

There are some extremely influential men that will tell them who they’re going to hire if this doesn’t work. One thing about Kentucky that’s been since my grandfather was young, is threats to the program can only go so far. This is the states crown jewel, it means more to this state than most teams in any state. If Mark doesn’t work a move will immediate be made to fix the problem. It won’t be another ho him Barnhart hire. And the notion some have that this job isn’t sought isn’t true. Hurley just won back to back obviously he didn’t want to step it in. But Oats will take it most likely, or another big gun. I go to a lot of games away and there is nowhere like the “pro” big business atmosphere of UK up close. It’s just most people don’t really understand that so we get a lot of bad takes about the subject.

I’ve said this for years. SEC sports is corrupt and dirty. If you don’t like that or want to be a part of it then go to a small private Christian college or something. You can’t be an AD of an SEC program unless you’re willing to do what it takes. And what it takes is DIRTY.

Mitch is a hatchet man. He’s establishment. He’s here to keep the Athletic Department free of issues so the university can run its land lord operation. With this board and pres winning has always been secondary. Need Kentucky men in charge that care about the program.
