The boogeyman “injury factor” is goofy AF. Most of these guys are wrestling 12 months out of the year. But this is the event to be avoided. <Insert air wank>
Hilarious. You nailed it, except for our staff laughing at Ryan. I feel sorry for Ryan. I suspect our staff does too. His team has this opportunity to participate is this great event. They are super excited and ready to do their best. Wrestling fans everywhere will be tuning in to follow the action. That was just Ryan being Ryan. It is something he can't help. If an articulated dumbed assed statement is needed for an occasion, Ryan is an obvious first choice.
With my Ryan take aside, it is still not an outrageous statement. Penn State's absence is very noticeable, and the reason is Cael did not believe attending was in Penn State's interest. At the end of the day, what is best for Penn State wrestling is waaay more important than Tom Ryan's feelings.
I guarantee the staff has made fun of Tom and his whiney assed ramblings, in private of course but they have collectively laughed out loud at his verbal silliness.
That's the thing. Do the national duals really grow the sport?? As CS said, creating an event is great but does it really serve the purpose they claim it does??
I agree with the idea that the current championship tournament is better at growing the sport. National duals automatically limit the exposure to 16 teams. That's telling the other 60 or so D1 programs they're not important enough to play with the big boys. I think it's fun to follow a wrester from Edinboro, for example, and see how far he goes in the tournament. If he earns All-American honors, it's good for him and the Edinboro program. In a national duals format, neither he nor Edinboro would get a mention.
That would still happen at the NCAA tournament though the individual tournament would remain the same it would just be an individual tournament and AAs still given but with no team champion.
what takes away from it is you get into a situation like football... early losses don't count...as muchOne small thing just popped into my head. Say you made the lone championship a dual one. You’d potentially get coaches making decisions to bump guys from their “natural” weight to get specific matchups like they occasionally do in tightly contested duals. Without an individual championship that dynamic could get kinda weird.
It would be in mid December that's the sweet spot for itExactly. While any team championship will always be dominated by the big programs, The current tournament gives the smaller programs a chance to shine with an All-American or even the occasional champ.
I'm not in favor of anything that takes away from the current championship format. If you want to make the Dual Tournament for the team championship, when are you going to have it? If you put it anywhere but at the end of the season, it devalues any of the dual meets that come after the Dual tourney. If you place it at the end of the dual season, you're adding yet another meatgrinder on top of the conference & national tournaments.
I think the heavier thinkers in here have never been in the backups could win it all camp.Mock PSU lineup if they did send backups/guys not on u23 team to this (not breaking RS)
125: Desmond
133: Garcia
141: Perry/Nasdeo
149: Pierce
157: Sealey
165: Beckett
174/184: Henckel/Asher
197: Mirasola
285: Cochran
This isn't a team that could win it, but I also don't think it would be necessarily be the worst team in the current tournament.
Does Ryan know the second phase of the “National Duels” is scheduled for Friday the 13th, February 2026???
Also, as we see at PIAA Duals every year: buckets of forfeits. One small thing just popped into my head. Say you made the lone championship a dual one. Great pointAlso, as we see at PIAA Duals every year: buckets of forfeits.
Because once you've clinched this round, keep the rest of the team fresh for the next round.
Incentives matter. A concept lost on the national duals advocates.
Call me out by name next time.I think the heavier thinkers in here have never been in the backups could win it all camp.
That’s fair.Call me out by name next time.
That lineup gets a heck of a lot saltier if you wave the magic “redshirt stays intact” wand though.Mock PSU lineup if they did send backups/guys not on u23 team to this (not breaking RS)

Vs. Iowa I think we’d lose on bonus. That lineup gets a heck of a lot saltier if you wave the magic “redshirt stays intact” wand though.
If you're letting Kasak back in at 157, then I think you'd see Sealey bump up to 165. Not that it makes much difference, as Cali probably bonuses him, too, but maybe L4 instead of L5.Vs. Iowa I think we’d lose on bonus.

In the case of a mid December National Duals, would the winning team be considered the 2025 championship team? Is there any sport that contests a season (yearly) championship any other time but end of season? It would be in mid December that's the sweet spot for it
Yeah, but we don't understand. It is a special logic. In the case of a mid December National Duals, would the winning team be considered the 2025 championship team? Is there any sport that contests a season (yearly) championship any other time but end of season?
We already have matches against 6 of the 16 team field.
Agreed, and in theory a team 'could' win a with only 4 match bonus wins and 6 losses in a dual format. Hardly an indicator for the real strength of the team. That's one of my points as well, although probably last on my list.
I also feel that the current tournament structure is a better measure of team championship as the talent pool is much deeper than just the selected few teams in a dual tournament.
It doesn't make sense to have any "National Championship" tournament anywhere but the end of the end of the season. No other NCAA sport is conducted this way.It would be in mid December that's the sweet spot for it
Ah, got it. I am proud to say I did not even read Tan tom's remarks. He was referring to Tan Tom’s remarks, not Cael’s.![]()
The champ will still come from the tournament. They want to change things to duals but that's been the plan for years and they've not been able to do it yet.In the case of a mid December National Duals, would the winning team be considered the 2025 championship team? I don't agree with changing anything and hope the NCAA tournament stays the team champ and that never changes. I was saying it's the best time for the current event and not mid November. But they're sticking with November again next yearIt doesn't make sense to have any "National Championship" tournament anywhere but the end of the end of the season. No other NCAA sport is conducted this way.
The closest examples would be Nascar, professional golf, and professional tennis. None of these are team sports.
This. 100%.What is laughable is that all these coaches “WANT” PSU at the duals. They “WANT” PSU there to grow the sport. But do they REALLY want us there? Like Cael said, “we’re pretty good at duals.” They might not like it when they get what they wish for and we go home with all the gold one of these days. Me thinks they don’t really want us there, they just want to grandstand after the fact.
Exactly SRATH. It’s why I’ve always felt this is a waste of time. Why should our guys keep wrestling the same kids three and four and five times in the same season, ridiculous. There’s nothing for us to gain in that model and really nothing for the competition to gain if they keep racking up losses to usWe already have matches against 6 of the 16 team field.
Oh it's on. I apologize to everyone ahead of time.@johnstownsteel
its wrasslin time… time to get active

My mid December sweet spot I was meaning for next year is my opinion. But I have since found out next year the Duals will be around the same date next year
