Fun read from McMurphy. Basically, if Navy wins the American on Saturday, the final College Football Rankings would have to be delayed till December 10 ... less than a week before the first bowl games. Calamity ensues.

Also Go Navy. Beat Temple ... then Army.

They were talking about this the other night. I look at it this way. If Navy and Western Michigan both win this weekend, and Western Michigan is ranked ahead of Navy at that point, I don't know how a Navy win over 6-5 Army would propel them above Western Michigan a week later. I think is what we will see happen. If both teams win this weekend, the committee will say that they discussed at length how a Navy win over Army would effect the rankings and the decision was made that there is zero chance Navy would surpass Western Michigan and they will unveil the bowls.

Now, here is the big issue. If Western Michigan somehow loses this weekend, then it REALLY will screw everything up, especially if Navy gets beat a week later by Army. If that was to happen, I wonder who would get the Cotton Bowl bid? Would they give it to a Navy squad coming off a loss to Army? Would they give it to a 10-3 WKU squad? Could get interesting if things go wacky.

Would love to see a Navy - WKU match up .
Navy might be a little much for WKU though

I was speaking of WKU making the Cotton Bowl as the highest ranked non Power 5 conference champion. They would play a Power 5 team then. Highly unlikely but a possibility.

No Navy is NOT holding the entire bowl system hostage. A large number of bowl are not impacted by who goes to the Cotton Bowl, including the playoffs , Sugar bowl, etc.

All of my post below is wrong and stupid.

This could have an effect on Kentucky's bowl prep.

If western Michigan loses, they are out of the running for the cotton bowl.
The spot would be navy's temporarily but not guaranteed.
There's a very good chance that louisville (maybe Oklahoma/Oklahoma state loser) would be backup to the cotton if navy were to lose to army.

If louisville is potential to the cotton, everybody in the acc would need to slide up one spot in bowl hierarchy. Now our gator bowl opponent is up in the air for one week.

From my understanding, the highest ranked non Power 5 conference champion goes to the Cotton. UL would not be an option.

IF you had read the article you would comprehend that they weren't talking about the ENTIRE bowl system, only those bowls that deal with the teams mentioned.

Remembering back to the days of only 4 bowl games, one of which was the Cotton Bowl, it's kind of sad how the Cotton Bowl has dropped in clout, reputation, etc. No offense intended to Navy, etc.

Makes me wonder how that happened over the years.

The demise of the Southwest Conference was the biggest problem. Once the SWC folded they no longer had a tie in to a major conference champion.

Where is Troy ranked as far as non P5 teams? Haven't kept up with them the last couple weeks but do they still stand a shot at the Cotton Bowl?

The Cotton Bowl situation was not unique. The entire bowl system has had to adjust to growth and changes in the P5. There are so many bowls now that nearly every P5 team with a .500 record gets a postseason invitation. But the biggest change has been the influence of big time media money in refocusing the bowl system on the college football playoffs.

I don't think it has really dropped as it is one of the NYD 6 Bowls and host one of the semi final games on a rotating basis. Normally the highest ranked conference champion from the group of 5 would go to the Fiest Biwl but can't this year cause it has a semi final game.

And that the Cotton Bowl is no longer played at the Cotton Bowl - it's played in Arlington.

But there is a game still played at the Cotton Bowl - and Zaxby's is the sponsor.

You are correct. The group of 5 does get an automatic berth now. I was thinking they had to have a team ranked so high. This shouldn't affect us at all.
