Not much buzz anywhere

Is Franz Wagner the only first rounder out of Big Ten?

Yup. NBA draft hasn't been great for the Big Ten last couple of years.

Last year Jalen Smith went 1st round to Phoenix (and couldn't get on the court in the finals).
This year Wagner and maybe Ayo.

Big Ten just isn't getting high impact freshman that translate to early 1st round picks.

1st interesting pick.
GSW @ 7.

Do they go more "immediate impact" to help next year or take a flyer and go safe @ 14?

1st round over.
Another lackluster 1st round for the Big Ten.
Wagner at 8 is only player picked.
Ayo drops to the 2nd round.

It's very weird seeing so many freshman from every other major conference, meanwhile the last 2 Big Ten Freshman Of The Year didn't even stay in the draft.

This is exactly why this conference is overrated and why it has gone 20 years or so not winning an NCAA title. It doesn't produce a heavy volume of nba players. I don;t understand why our fan base thinks this is a strong conference year after year. It's not.

Weiskamp is a good smart player...nice pickup by Spurs......he'll have a career like Huerter - solid player for Hawks.

Will Garza be drafted?

2021 Final Four MOP: Jared Butler (Junior) - 40th overall pick
2021 Player of the Year: Luka Garza (Luka Garza) - 52nd overall pick

Please reread this post next time you want to comment that "(insert productive college upperclassmen) is a guaranteed 1st round pick."

A lot of 2nd rounders from the Big Ten.

Garza
Ayo
Wieskamp
Livers
Wiggins
Banton

Banton clearly a surprise. Aaron Henry not getting picked is surprising too, his game seemed to be what NBA guys love, my opinion he’s the better version of Banton.

The NBA has a LOT of older players who are 10+ years in the league. The talent that comes out of HS and performs at a high level in college, still means very little. You have to be a smart, team-oriented and willing defender to stick.

Aaron Henry (Michigan State)
DJ Carton (Ohio State/Marquette)
Duane Washington Jr (Ohio State)
Eugene Omoyuri (RU/Oregon)
Mac McClung (GTown/Texas Tech)
Jose Alvarado (Georgia Tech)
McKinley Wright (Colorado)

All good, productive players, but as often as people think players are NBA bound, there's a backlog of veterans, that are just taking up salary cap space.

Of those guys I'm only surprised Henry and maybe Wright wasn't drafted.

I wasn’t surprised Banton got drafted because I had no clue who he was.

they had 2 guys hog the ball and got better when one quit. Now we know why

That is one big list of guys who were not drafted. I think a lot of them as usual might be sorry they didn't stay in college but best of luck to all of them. It is so hard at this time to make the NBA.

Dalano Banton is everything NBA scouts want... until you watch him actually play a game. I remember all the buzz he got when he transferred from WKU to Nebraska. OMG a 6'9" guy who can handle the ball and pass! Meanwhile I'm looking at his WKU numbers and wondering what the hell I'm missing. Then he suited for Nebraska and I realized I wasn't missing anything.

This guy won't be confused for Ray Allen.

Maybe he is a poor man's Ben Simmons who hasn't figured out yet he shouldn't be shooting.

60 total picks

SEC 12
B1G 7
BIG 12 7
ACC 7
Pac 12 4
Big East 4
WCC 3
Others 16 (overseas, G League etc)

Hard to argue that there's not quality players in quality leagues.

you could just as easily say, wow the Big Ten annually has outstanding performances in the NCAA tourney based on teams in the Final Four, total wins, winning percentage, teams in the Sweet 16, etc.

The Big Ten is appropriately rated highly on an annual basis because it has very good basketball teams. The Big Ten has lacked a little bit in terms of getting those top 10/20 recruits that were often taking money under the table to go to places like Kentucky and Duke and being 1 and done.

NIL and G League changing how the talent flows nationally right now.

Signed after, not drafted
Worth noting (maybe?) that the Mavs didn’t actually have any draft picks so anyone they picked up would have been as an undrafted free agent. Still a very steep hill for Eugene to climb to reach any type of meaningful minutes.

I won't comment on quality players in quality leagues.

But just looking at the 1st round shows a drastic difference between high level NBA Talent among the conferences.
Note - NBA talent doesn't necessarily mean college talent.

30 picks:
SEC: 7
PAC-12: 4
ACC: 4
Big-12: 3
International: 3
G-League Ignite: 2
WCC: 2
Big 10: 1
Big East: 1
AAC: 1
A-10: 1
Patriot League: 1

Considering the Big 10 also had one 1st round pick in 2020, I would assume the breakdown would be similar.

I think there's 2 different paths that impact college basketball fans.

Winning games via recruiting and coaching.

Winning recruiting battles based on Pro/NBA potential and athletic ability.

Right now, the B1G is winning it's share of basketball games at a high rate, but is rarely capturing the free-wheeling 1 or 2 and done types of the SEC or ACC (Florida State specifically).

Pace of play and style of play is more easily translated in the SEC or ACC because of the pace they usually play at, mixed with the higher caliber athletes. I believe there will eventually be a market-correction, so to speak......as teams figure out the defense and 3 point shooting isn't the entire league, and players get back to the more traditional 2 pointer and becoming a complete player, things will change.

It would be interesting to see how many players actually stick on rosters over the last 4 to 5 years, as the B1G has improved.

I also think the head to head matchups are critical and the B1G took a large step back in the NCAAs, after a few steps forward in the 3 prior years. I feel like the 2nd rounders out of this year's draft, have a very good chance to stick for a few years in the NBA. I like Weiskamp, Livers, Garza and Aaron Wiggins to be around for 4 to 5 years. I have no idea how to grasp Banton and Wagner will be a 10 year pro, because he's efficient as a shooter.

Dousumu is the wild card, landing with the Bulls. Being in state and at home, could be a boom or distraction.

Watched Garza get some playing time tonight. Did OK, really hustled and did the little things.

Also, in case you guys missed it Eugene made his NBA debut, 6 pts.

Remember watch Eugene as a freshman. Amazing. Him being an NBA player is mind blowing . I think him leaving was ridiculous, but he gave it everything he had when playing here.

Eugene is in the NBA? How is that possible?

his success is one of the most incredible things I’ve seen in basketball. A guy that was a project/lightly recruited as a freshmen improves dramatically every year and finds his way onto an nba roster. Also, it’s not like he’s this physical specimen that just needed some time to blossom. Average athlete (relatively speaking), but incredibly hard working, nose for the ball and very savvy.
