Ugh.

Penn State Football with the 2nd worst (ahead of only Maryland) among Big Ten programs in latest NCAA Academic Progress Scores.

Keep in mind, the NCAA methodology is a very lagging indicator - ie, while it is just now published, it is a measure of prior several years, not a measure of this year's performance (And they certainly are not the be-all and end-all as a metric. How is it calculated? Link here: Academic Progress Rate Explained - NCAA.org ).
But it is sad, nonetheless.

One can probably expect that this is largely influenced by PSU having so many student-athletes transferring out of the school - without a degree - in recent years.

Men's Basketball finished 3rd worst (ahead of Illinois and Maryland)

On the plus side:
On the Men's side, Ice Hockey scored well - as did Field Hockey, Softball, Golf, Gymnastics, and Lacrosse on the Women's side.

**** the NCAA...they have no rules, they don't do sh*t, and now they have a bullcrap Progress Report! How did UNC and their fake classes make out???

Thank you for posting this.
With the constant barrage of news and rants about NIL and Xfers and Media deals and recruiting wars and facilities wars and the quest for championships that I subject myself to via BWI and its posters, even an old timer like me sometimes has to remind myself that there is still a greater purpose (theoretically) to college athletics for the athletes than just winning games.

I can only hope the athletes themselves understand that better than we fans do sometimes.

This report is flawed, no doubt. (e.g. why do kids who transfer out get counted? Why not leave that metric out entirely, given the xfer tidal wave of recent years?).
Still, it does show a comparison vs peer institutions, and I want us to be at or near the top in all competitive things, on and off the field.

PSU is an awesome academic school… the NCAA should write this report on toilet paper… so I could give it its proper use!

Good point - what progress could Storm Duck have completed before transferring out.

Looks like up until 2010-2011, PSU football was consistently number 2 through 4 in the Big. Since then, they've been up and down. In 2018-2019, they beat 10 teams in the Big. The year before, they beat 8 teams. Michigan has been up and down too.

This metric is weird. It doesn't mean what I thought it did. The most possible points is 1000. If a player remains at a school and is academically eligible, the team doesn't lose points. If a player stays at a school but is ineligible, the team loses points. If players transfer out but are academically eligible, the team loses points. If players leave the school and are academically ineligible, the team loses more points. It seems the most important metric is that the team stays above 930 points to remain eligible for championships.

You are probably correct. But the report should still be written on toilet paper! I seriously could not give a sh*t what they have to say.

Not sure about that. I read something many years ago that Joe had some high school prospects do some reading before he decided to offer them a scholarship. One of the reasons I respected Joe as a coach.

Does it really matter anymore? “College”
football is now a professional sport and it is becoming more and more like the NFL with each passing day. It seems to be headed towards players not even having to attend school and only being paid to represent a particular school on the football field. Most of the players don’t even care about academics nor do they likely care about the school for which they play - they only care about getting into the NFL. As Murray Rothbard once said, all stereotypes are true and none has likely been more true than that of the dumb jock, especially the football player. It wouldn’t be a bad thing if big time “college” football (and basketball) went the way of the dodo bird.
