On HR they are listing the weights they have gone the longest without a champ. Made me curious for OSU. I was surprised that we have not had a champ at 125. The last lowest weight champ was Moore at 118 in 1999, Guerrero won the same year at 126. The next year they adopted the current weights. Also at HWT the last champ that started at OSU was Jimmy Jackson in 1978. Mocco in 2005 was the last at OSU. Wow, while looking this up I realized we haven't had a 141 either, Fried at 142 in 1994 was the last in that range.
The other weights go as follows:
133: Oliver
149: Oliver
157: AD
165: AD
174: Perry
184: Rosholt
197: Rosholt

OSUMatfan, You could be correct as the top three at this weight were seniors. Lavion Mayes, of Missouri, Kevin Jack NC State, Chris Mecate ODU are the top returning competition for Heil along with Anthony Ashnault and Joey Ward.

I think the toughest will be Brewer bumping up.

I thought Brewer was staying at 133 and Lavon Mayes was moving up to 149. I think I read that on the USA Wrestling site which is 100% accurate. Apparently Mayes had trouble making 141 and I think Applegate was saying that Brewer has not trouble making 133.

Pardon my ignorance on Joey Ward as I am not familiar with him. It seems to me that Ashnault lost to Dean in the round of 8 match on Friday night, but was injured in the match and defaulted all the way to 8th place. Ashnault will be tough and Mecate did defeat Dean in the quarter finals, but finished below him anyway.

My gut feeling is Dean probably got a whole lot of confidence out of the NCAA tournament and will turn it on this year. Hopefully Crutchmer will do the same at 174.

Now I must research Joey Ward!

Warren is not pulling the weight and Brewer is and my understanding is that Brewer was out of several matches last year not only due to his injury but also due to having to pull too much to get to 133.

When Brewer was on FRL he hinted that he was moving up. The main reason he was seeded so low was from missing so many matches due to missing weight.

That and getting stuck by Hall from Iowa State if I remember correctly. Moving up to 141 might be a little tough on Brewer. He manhandled everybody at the NCAA's at 133 and I doubt he does that at 141 when he may be a little smaller than others.

If he moves up that gives us a little better chance of getting someone on the podium at 133 and I think Dean and Brewer would be a great match.

Mecate looked very strong against Heil even though he only won by one point it seemed like he was in control. I think a little confidence for Dean will do a lot.

We will have a "chance" to be in the title picture you would think at 141, 149, 165, 174 and HWT. 149 and HWT being the most remote and you could toss in a homer view and say 125 and 157 would have also have shot to be in the conversation.

I am thinking that Collica has a very good chance to win it all at 149. He has defeated the former champion in freestyle (Tsirtsis) Last years champion Houdeshelt and the runner up Habat have graduated. He also beat Sorenson who took 4th in freestyle. Those Freestyle matches were pretty dominating and I do not think either of those guys are especially good mat wrestlers so I think his chances are as good as anybody at 149.

You are probably right. He really came on at the end of the year as an undersized 157 and looked very good this offseason. He has the pedigree to be in the mix for sure.

Maybe I am overly optimistic about this team, but I see four guys (141,149,165, & 174) that could very well contend for the title, two others that could be there with some upsets or leaps in performance (125 & HWT). If Marsteller belongs at 157 he should be very tough and should be a high AA. Our undersized 133 pounder last year made it to the round of 12, and Boyd lost his elimination match to a fairly high placing AA. When you have that kind of quality in the room we might even see a big jump in performance at 197 as well. Easily our best potential since our string of four championships.

I know Collica wrestled up two weights from the previous year, but he did bulk up a bunch, and probably was a legit 149 pounder wrestling at 157.

If he has to go down from 157 to 149, any chance that ends up being a bigger pull than we're thinking right now? I'm sure he's going to bulk up again this summer (and needs to). I'd imagine he's probably going to be a legit 157 pounder come fall.

Very little chance Micco as the plan is to have him at 149 and Marsteller at 157. Of course, everything is subject to change but why would you have two All-American prospects going after each other at 157?

He was at 154 at universities and he did not look any bigger than tsirtsis or sorenson. I think he will handle the cut well.

My bad...wasn't trying to imply he'd actually BE a 157 pounder this year, just that he'd have the size of a legitimate 157 pounder and therefore possibly a difficult pull to 149.

April, glad to hear he's closer to weight than I thought he might be.
