If he was in Stillwater this past weekend and was "shopping" around then he clearly isn't happy with his current situation. He either did this because he wants to leave and or wanted some leverage to negotiate. What did Ryan do to make things right? Did they just pay him off to stay? That doesn't help the situation if the kid wants to wrestle IMO.

Which is exactly why a player (at a top 5 program) that shops around should be dropped. This is at best toxic to the culture right? I may be very “get off my lawn” with this take but I just wouldn’t want a kid to be doing this during season. Off season with the current rules I’m gonna just look the other way because it’s here now but mid season is a bad look.

I definitely isn’t good. I would expect the NCAA to address some of these problems pretty soon. You will see some of the big money this year, but it isn’t sustainable, especially programs that are throwing huge cash at athletes that don’t pan out.

I agree. If Ryan had balls, he would have taken the temporary hit by releasing Welsh for the long term gain in clarity for the entire team. Ryan looks weak here.

IMO it’s like if an employee comes to you and says “Hey I’ve got a job offer from X, and they’re going to pay me Y. If you can’t match or exceed that, I’m out.”

Doesn’t matter whether you stay or go in that moment. As soon as you say it you’ve started a clock on your time there because it’s known you’re looking for an exit and aren’t bought in. May be a month, may be a year or two. Either way, tick tick tick.

BINGO. Management 101. Anyone who talks about leaving is already mentally gone. I would think someone of Ryan's age would already know that. You don't negotiate with terrorists. Welsh is a terrorist in Ryan's program. No bueno.

Lmao not even close. I meant I wouldn’t have said anything about the welsh thing on here until he tweeted. If it was just mineo talking I wouldn’t have blasted welsh or Ohio state for how this looked, but since welsh tweeted, confirming it, it’s fair to talk crap about how this looked imo.

It's a new generation of athlete. and just like in real-life - asking for more money doesn't mean your "checked out"

Unless you just completely HATE your job/position/company - most people would elect to stay at their current place of employment if they were given more money - when offered more at another place.

only if you give it to them. Why doesn't Cael have this problem? Maybe TanTom isn't "communicating" well. Welsh thinks he has been lied to. Bouzakis thinks he has been lied to. I see a trend.

Simple... No one else can afford to tell a kid/national finalist to kick rocks. Carl - by force of the number of high level recruits he has coming in and the fact that he's the only winning both multiple individual and team natty titles can tell any one kid to kick rocks.

and you yourself know that Carl was one signature/one firing away from leaving PSU. That "flirtation" sure hasn't damaged his motivation, passion and love for all things PSU wrestling.

I know that issue seems like it's the same as Welsh, but it isn't. Cael was highlighting a problem within the institution, namely the AD. Other coaches had the same issue but didn't have the gravatis of Cael Sanderson. Cael was not trying to enrich himself but to protect his program. Hopefully you and others can see the different between that and Rocco Welsh trying to gain personal advantage.

This is pretty similar though. Cael is home at Iowa State, and he leaves them for a better offer at Penn. St. Iowa State probably has questioned his loyalty over the years. Cael is all about winning and he will do what it takes to win even if it is questionable. Every University has to weigh their situation and decide what's best for them in regard to paying wrestlers. Ohio State did with Rocco what they thought was best for them. Easy to stick with your ethics when you have lapped the field. I remember early what Cael would do to win by bringing in a very questionable transfer.

As for the bolded, Cael did the right thing. He refused any attempt at a ISU counter offer. I can respect that. He got paid very handsomely by PSU but it wasn't about the money. He wanted a school that shared his vision. Time has proved him right.

As for Andrew Long, I think every coach is allowed a mulligan as long as it isn't repeated. Many coaches think they can change a person but don't realize that the change has to come from within. I am sure Scott Moore at Lock Haven did great things for Chance but it was Chance that changed his trajectory. Some make it. Some don't.

This two week break is rough!

Let me preface this with 1) I am not advocating for "poaching" kids from smaller programs. 2) It would be much better for our sport to spread out the wealth. 3) I hate the NIL era.

With that being said, you have to assume studs at smaller schools will be interested to see what their value is in the portal. Here is a list of top15 kids (intermat) from "smaller" programs that may want to test the market (as much as I wish it wasn't this way, let's not play stupid). Year listed is current, not next years.

125
no one stuck out

133
#2 Zeth Romney - SO Cal Poly
#6 Braxton Brown - JR Maryland
#7 Tyler Knox - FR Stanford
#9 Nasir Bailey - SO UALR (I think he would've left last year If he was going to but still worth the list IMO)

141
no one stuck out

149
#8 Ethan Stiles - FR OrSt

157
no one stuck out

165
#7 Will Miller - JR App St
UR Alex Facundo - SO PSU

174
#4 Lorenzo Norman - FR Stanford (slightly hopeful more than realistic)
#6 Garrett Thompson - JR Ohio

184
no one stuck out

197
#2 AJ Ferrari - JR UCSB (obviously not for us)
#10 Mac Stout - SO Pitt

285
#4 Isaac Trumble - JR NCSU (hopeful maybe)
UR Nathan Taylor - JR Lehigh (med RS)
UR Taye Ghadiali - SR Campbell (med RS)

I'm not saying do this but let's go get these guys 🤣🤣. Thought most here were against that. My guess is that they will change their tune real fast or they will make and excuse for it when it happens. Also most kids go to Stanford for the education and wouldn't leave until they got a degree. You definitely missed a 157 Cardenas not sure when he will graduate from Stanford but he showed up to the Salute in Iowa by himself when his team was at Midlands 🤷

Cardenas still has 2 years I believe would be a nice pickup for the hawks.

Yes he will have 2 years. But I'm not sure when he will graduate from Stanford if he's gonna be done in 3 1/2 or 4 years. I'm not sure he will leave before he graduates but who knows

Outside of Norman and Trumble, I did not imply we should "go get these guys" at all. As stated by my preface, I do not love the portal/NIL era, but I am also on the side that says it's here and you have to use it. I'm just bored on my day off and digging into random wrestling topics. Just interested in who could be in the portal and this was my way of looking at possibles.

I was just busting balls 🤣🤣. Either you get with the times or get left behind. It would be like running a company still using a pen and paper while others have laptops you would be a ****** company soon unless you adapt

There is a difference between kids who seek out change / know they are leaving and kids being incentivized to enter the portal. You know that too.

Like Hamiti right 🤣. He wanted change so it was ok that Oklahoma st people contacted him prior to NCAA and he left NCAA for Stillwater and was there on Sunday and entered the portal Monday. That's ok in Stillwater. But if done in Iowa City it's so bad. And FYI Iowa has never had anyone leave NCAA and go straight to Iowa City. That's the 1st and only time that's even happened. Don't let the hate cloud your judgement

If you know so much about the situation then fully break it down for everyone. What was the first convo? It damn sure wasn’t our coaches or our collective. Just because he knew where he was going before the window doesn’t mean we pulled him out. You act like these kids aren’t friends and they don’t talk.

And you bring Dean up everytime as your “gotcha” moment while caping for Bob and TnT. It’s strange how everyone agrees but Iowa

First contact matters.
