You are seeing more and more people start talking that maybe being independent in football is the way to go. Chip Kelly made this point as has some prominent sports writers.

For almost two decades, people have kept claiming ND is going to have to give up their independence in football but as it stands now, maybe the question now to ask is when do all these football schools break away from conferences, leaving that structure to basketball and the Olympic sports?
If there is a separation among schools in the SEC/B10/Notre Dame, then some of those schools could be an independent. Independence probably won't work below that level, as there isn't a solid basis for a school negotiating for their own TV/broadcast agreements.

Independence could be subject to change again if there is a change in how schools are selected for the playoff -- moving away from conference champions to the 12 "best" schools. But schools have to create a schedule with adequate SOS to achieve this goal too -- and the larger players have either never been independent or haven't been for at least 30 years.

PSU could pull it off, but hard to see other schools that are perenially top 20/25 schools making it work.

Doubt PSU could make being independent work now, they seen the writing on wall years ago and realized being independent was not going to be financially worthwhile for them.
Most outside the tri state area that don't have a connection to PSU aren't fans and have other programs they support.

The imitation Irish are an exception to that rule.
Unaffiliated college football fans gravitate toward Notre Dame fan-hood , if they aren't intreasted in the local college football program, especial those that attended a catholic high school , but didn't attend college or their collage wasn't a FBS one

It would be just like Texas and OU to the SEC. They’re getting a full share right off the bat next year. ESPN isn’t paying more to the SEC though, just making Texas and OU whole.

Long term it’s still a good move for the SEC just like ND would be for the B10.
I would hope that the NFL has learned about hiring college coaches after the Urban Meyer, Greg Schiano, Bobby Petrino, Chip Kelly, and Kliff Kingsbury debacles.

PSU might, as they have a solid foothold in the #1 and #4 DMA markets.

Otherwise you need national appeal, and even BYU has given up independence. No one really has it outside of Notre Dame.

I agree. College football has changed a lot and the media around it has changed, too. Notre Dame just isn't that big of a deal anymore, not like they used to be anyway. And they seem unlikely to break into the upper echelons.

Remember old Knute and Ara?

They have basically been Michigan since. Except they have more than .5 titles in 78 years

I don’t see that all. No B1G or SEC is going to go independent because they will be making more than ND’s next NBC contract and have no need.

How many schools outside of those two conferences, and who couldn’t get into one of those two conferences if available, would make sense as an independent?

It wasn’t really everyone being “independent” Kelly was talking about. He was just using the term loosely.

He was just saying football should be split from the the other sports as “independent” and the other sports should be more geographically sensible. So that was just a loose analogy to ND with football separated from the other sports.

Doug Pederson was the coach when the Eagles won the Super Bowl. Barry Switzer gets an asterisk. He won with the team Johnson built and eventually put it in a ditch. Carroll was an NFL guy. Before USC, he was one of the better DCs in the league before head coaching stints with the Jets and Patriots. Would agree about Johnson, Vermeil, and Harbaugh, though Harbaugh's long playing career makes him an NFL guy.

No one mentioned Pederson . He wasn’t college coach

I wonder if Notre Dame is upset that the ACC didn't take Cal and Stanford after asking them to.
Notre Dame is obligated to play 5 ACC football programs every year while their other programs are part if the ACC , but only played 4 in 2022, will play 6 in 2023.
I wonder if ND will try for just 4 games on order to play either Cal or Stanford to help them out ,if they don't find a good landing spot

Why should any school be able to make so many of their own rules? The Yankees don't. It's a special kind of arrogance.
