--Brown said that sophomore cornerback Nicktroy Fortune’s mother passed away Thursday morning. He is one of the finest young men in the program and will be out as long as he needs. Brown hopes everybody will be thinking about him and his family during this difficult time.
--Dr. Gordon Gee coming out and speaking to the team was right on the mark. Today, the Mountaineers were in the stadium and they wanted to be able to perform on Saturday. Players have the rest of the day and tomorrow off, but they worked on all situation today such as red zone, two minute, etc. They didn’t tackle today and aren’t sure when, but they got some good work in with the rain.
--Brown said that Alec Sinkfield continues to stand out at running back and has handled the layoff well by putting on weight. He is making guys miss in space and Brown is excited about. Parker Moorer, a redshirt freshman offensive lineman as well as redshirt senior Chase Behrndt played well today with high effort. Offensive lineman Mike Brown was solid today, but they need him to be more consistent. Wide receiver Sam James made some big plays today. Defensive lineman Darius Stills has high expectations and he really showed out today and made plays. Tykee Smith is one of the upper-echelon players and had two interceptions today and continues to grow. Scottie Young had his first real team action and made some nice plays and was always around the football. Dreshun Miller was the best cover guy they had today, and he showed up in the run game.
--Brown is excited that they are staying the course and he believes that they need to play if it can be done in a safe manner. He believes in the safety protocols they’ve been going through and as they continue to get those negative test results back it shows they are doing the right thing. The challenge will be once other students return to town, but they already know that.
--It’s to be determined by the NCAA if Scottie Young will get a waiver. He’s a proven player in the Pac-12 and coach Addae coached him at Arizona and he hasn’t disappointed. He gets himself in good body position to make plays.
--Brown says next time we get together we’ll talk about the transfers in-depth. There are some that they’re waiting on some paperwork for now, which means they can’t be discussed. But that should clear itself up soon and he’ll also have information on players applying for waivers as well.
--Brown thinks they are doing more teaching and evaluation in terms of situational football. He won’t know until they get into an all-team environment to see what it looks like.
--Today Brown was the center judge and Gerad Parker called the plays. The receivers are showing some real progress and they had a lot of time to spend growing.
--Brown believes there has been some positive things come out of the split squad. Working the split squad, everybody has been getting a lot of reps and they are getting one on one coaching. They have a longer time to get ready to play and that means more coaching. It has been a benefit for those young offensive linemen. Those guys are going to get a lot of reps and going against good people. There are some negatives too because it’s harder to evaluate because it isn’t best on best.
--Sam James is a speed wide receiver that can run and take the top off, Ali Jennings has great body control and can use his body. Sean Ryan and Bryce Wheaton are longer guys that can catch the ball down the field and Winston Wright can make you miss with good initial burst.
--Brown believes most of the additions have to do with need and they are low on scholarships. They’re trying to get the grades right in each room. They lose a lot of safeties in that room next year and if Scottie Young redshirts, he can be a safety next year. They have some holes as far as years. They have very few seniors in this class, but they are trying to even up from a lot of position rooms.
--Tyler Sumpter is primarily a punter and Bryce Brand is a bandit. He is a guy that is going to help us. Jairo Faverus is playing some spear after being mostly at cornerback in the spring.
--Brown loves Sean Martin and Zach Frazier and they love the game of football. Really good teammates and he is excited about them.
--Brown said that the energy doesn’t have to be manufactured when there are media or scouts there. As coaches they are not having to start those guys in those instances because players like to perform and showcase what they can do. This time they aren’t playing as much loud music and there isn’t anybody that isn’t a university employee that’s out there, so it’s harder. Players miss media out there.
