--Brown thought his communication and creative department did a good job with Mother’s Day. It’s been nine weeks since the last team activity, but they’ve maintained a consistent approach with this. It’s health and wellness, routine and schedule and accountability. They’re encouraging them to do workouts and position work but that obviously can’t be monitored. The last two weeks have been tougher than the previous six and the players really need something to look forward to like a date. It was a tough day for the staff last week with the cuts. The partnership with Jeremy Darlow is one he is excited about and is getting in front of the issues with the NLI. They will be releasing details with the fifth quarter program to help develop student athletes outside of football. He continues to be cautiously optimistic about playing football this fall and they are waiting for the direction of the Big 12 Conference and the football oversight committee to provide guidelines. They have been preparing for the return of the players so when that does happen they’ll be ready for it with procedures and guidelines in place.
--It’s important they play during this fiscal year. It’s not up to him to figure out the pros and cons. I think the country needs something to look forward to, but he has tried to stay educated.
--Players just need something to look forward to. They want some direction on when they’d play and the longer, they wait to decide the more information they will have. That May 31 date is how they are currently operating.
--Brown got said that they got some relief from the NCAA and if guys have a proof of graduation, they can join team meetings and position meetings. They might be a little further ahead from a mental standpoint because of that but physically they will miss things.
--Brown hasn’t been near the construction area for the past two weeks, but it has been a positive that they’ve gotten more work done. The next phase is something they are getting ahead on and they’ve began the process on the video board as well. They’re on schedule right now, maybe even slightly ahead of where they would be.
--A lot of planning that goes into a potential return. Getting best practices from the medical people and they’re going to try to put those into play. It starts with testing and that’s something they are working through this week. The testing piece is where it all starts.
--Until May 31, when it comes to official visitors it will be dead for June, but he can understand the argument through July. They’re not getting into the details and making plans until they know what the rules are on the official visitors. They initially were going to have a huge recruiting weekend in June but they won’t have that now because they don’t want to waste time.
--Brown said his mindset is up and down with this and it’s hard to plan for anything because you don’t know what is next. It’s typically so structured and planned so it’s hard to answer questions because you really don’t know what will happen next. There is some zoom fatigue and it’s hard to tell what is enough or what is too much. It’s impossible to try to tell right now. The guys want to play football.
--There needs to be things that can bring people together and unifies people and gives them something to loom forward to. They must do it smart and within the guidelines but it’s huge to bring it back. Brown misses being able to watch NBA basketball and other athletics. He loves that aspect with his family and athletics in general will be huge for the country.
--Brown has been looking for mental health issues with his players and has kept his antenna up when there are signs. He wants to get a good picture of how they are doing as people. He wants to make sure they are safe and well and in tune with how things are going given all the different circumstances.
--Troy was an Adidas school and that’s how Brown was able to connect with Jeremy Darlow because he was the brand representative with them at the time. He read the book he wrote and then he read his second book, which was the lead into what he does now with the educational aspect of it all. He wrote a forward in that book and he’s had a lot of conversations with him about branding. They offer the service, but it is completely player driven and can benefit them during and after their playing career.
--Brown said they’ve tried in their normal recruiting to hold the line that if they haven’t been on campus it’s probably not in the best interest to commit but if this goes longer, they have to change their thinking. Graduate transfers won’t have that choice, so they must make decisions without visiting.
--The focus is education right now but once they get clear direction with the rules on name, image and likeness they’ll move onto the next piece of it.
--Brown said it’s the right thing to do to invite the alumni to be around the program. They built the tradition so it’s important to welcome them back. There are always certain things you can’t do but the former players helped to build this program and have a vested interest in it so they should be welcomed back and it’s something they are going to continue to grow. They are trying to build those relationships and a lot of former players have been great with this. They’ve had calls and several of them in position meetings on zoom and the players want to give back to the athletes.
--All the return to play models has a window for a lot of medical stuff. Whether it’s being tested or the normal type of testing they do. There could be a stress test where people are because there are unknowns and people must get ready in a short window.
