I remember this play specifically because I said out loud, “they only have 3 DL” and laughed. That’s not necessarily on #5. Butler put his players in a bad situation.
There was another situation just like that. Huge space between only three linemen and Iowa was inside the 10. They scored a couple TDs with guys running untouched through massive holes. Plus it doesn't help having a LB playing with only one hand.

This defense was built to defend USC. Eight guys at 220 pounds or less on the field at all times. But we still can't beat passing spread teams and get absolutely manhandled against physical offenses.

We only had 3 defensive lineman last year…and you guys couldn’t do anything on offense. The scheme is fine if you have the guys to run it. We didn’t. The coaches never made a change to give us a chance. Very disappointing.

Fourth string QB last year pry had something to do with it. 😉

But I’m not talking in general. I’m talking at the three yard line against a team that runs the ball and has a 240 lb QB that’s rushed for a TD in every game this season. That’s bad play calling.

It was our base system. Teams don’t change their front game to game or in game very often. We ran a 3-3-5 last year and it shut down the run against most everyone. We ran the same system this year and we didn’t have the guys for it to work. The issue wasn’t play calling. It was our chosen system with our current personnel. There’s a difference. Our defense from last year would have been just fine yesterday vs Iowa. Your qb wasn’t the difference yesterday. We’ve had the same problem all year regardless of who the qb was

I’m well aware it’s your base system. Butler had 4 guys on the line of scrimmage on a 2nd and 3 with 1:32 left in the half just after that. But 2nd and goal from the 3 you have 3 guys on the LOS and 4 LBs starting on the goal line? Thats not gonna win, my friend.

I also understand you’re getting hung up on me specifying DL and maybe I should have just said guys on the line of scrimmage. My fault for the confusion.

Count me as someone that doesn't understand why Butler didn't change up the defensive front after the Michigan game. Ty Rob and Hutmacher both required double teams and that gave us a lot of options defensively. Not to be unkind but RVP in particular is just not good enough to play in the Big 10. He gets driven around 1-1 and is too slow to present a threat to all but the slowest QBs.

Nebraska still doesn't understand Big 10 football after all this time .

EVERYBODY has heavy short yardage and goal line defensive packages which usually means bringing in an extra DT or TWO.

My two cents worth, butler is still coaching like he’s in the nfl, he needs to adjust college is different especially with the liberal stance on holding by the oline

I agree. This system is a terrible fit in the Big 10. It would probably be ok in the Big 12, but the Big 10 is too much of a trenches game.

Well, to be fair, our head coach hasn't ever been around the Big 10 (nor does he ever reference his experience at a Big 10 school) prior to coming here.

Given that, you can't really expect him to understand what it takes to compete in this conference.

Can anybody explain why, after having a number of running QB's torch us, that Butler does not put a spy on the QB? He did in the second half of the UCLA game after we got burned a few times in the first half and it worked. I mean, this should not be that hard.

Ty was an absolute beast last year. Nash was tough inside as well. But I thought we were really pushing our luck by leaning on those two as much as we did last year. We succeeded in stopping the run despite the scheme we were running. Ty and Nash would have been ever better in the middle of a 4-3.

I think he did some against iowa. Took the spy out of position on a RB TD run.
