What do you recommend?
  • Sleep Number?
  • TempurPedic (not a fan, personally)
  • Something else?
Anybody ever negotiate on the sale?
The original purple bed is the best bed I've ever slept on. Quasi-firm (but with the newer models you can get a thicker honeycomb gel pad that will soften it to your liking), complete support, absolutely zero motion transfer to the other side. I would definitely get it again.

How much ‘stuff’ is in between you and the honeycomb?

Do you need a bed or a mattress? If it's a bed, I would recommend this "Ladies Man" model.

The purple honeycomb itself is 2" thick and there's a thin-ish (i.e. not a pillow-top type) mattress cover on top of it. The honeycomb lies on top of two separate layers of support foam, making the entire mattress -- cover and all -- prolly 9-10" thick.

Added bonus: Purple mattresses come with a free pair of magic underwear since they are made in Utah by Mormons.

We looked at several beds locally and really liked some of the Tempurpedics. However, we thought they were very overpriced. I did a little research online and ordered a memory foam mattress from Select- a-Bed that fit the same firmness profile of the Tempurpedic we liked. It turned out to be a great decision. It was half the price and it has been an extremely good mattress. It was exactly what we wanted. If I buy another mattress, I will do the same thing.

I looked at Tempurpedic but wasn't willing to pay that much for foam. I did gamble on a cheap Zinus memory foam and it is the best bargain I've ever bought. I have the green tea mattress but would like to try the cloud after reading reviews. I also bought their platform and it is really rigid, quiet, and easy to set up.

Weird question, but can you feel the honeycomb?

Not really. I mean you can feel the honeycomb cushioning changing positioning as you roll on it, but it's not unpleasant or odd at all.

Final bonus: they give you a 90 (maybe it's 100) day guarantee, and if you don't like it they will send someone to take it away for you and give a full refund, no questions asked. From everything I researched online, it literally was a no-hassle return.

Cool. I just didn't want to wake up looking like I spooned a bee's home all night.

-mattress stores are turrible....overpriced and crappy service. Shady losers who cant quite make it to the big leagues (used car sales...door to door knife sales)

-costco ftw. 1/2 the cost twice the service...lifetime warranty.

Not sure why you aren't a fan of TempurPedic. I'd never had one until a year ago. We needed a new bed, and wanted the automatic adjustable option because my wife and I both work a lot of hours and like to veg-out watching TV at night.

It was expensive and I felt like I was over-paying, but I can honestly say it was one of the best purchases I've made in a long while. My wife and I both had back pain that has gone away. We've found an angle to sleep at that we both prefer -- not pure horizontal, elevated slightly -- and watching movies from bed is better than from our living room now that the kids are in college and it is just us.

Sleep Number was absolutely terrible. It was 8 or 9 years ago, but it was nothing but a couple of air mattresses with a skinny layer of fabric on top. Think of pool floats from the 70s and 80s. That coarse material with sharp edges. If any of the stuff on top wore down, that's what you would feel. I'm sure they've gotten better since, but still.

Tempurpedic Cloud ever since. Best mattress ever, but if I didn't get 60% off at the time, I don't know I would say that. It's starting to break down now, and 60% off = no warranty.

Anybody have one of those Sleep Number's?

Edit: the list price for the King model I want is $7K. [roll]

I have one that i bought 3 years ago and paid $5500 for. It’s ok but definitely not worth $5500. Only benefit really is the ability for two people to sleep in the same bed with different firmness preferences. Like another poster indicates it really is just two blow up mattresses as I watched the crew put mine together.

There are some mattresses you can get online from places like tuft and needle that I have heard good things about that has 100% money back guarantee. King I believe is only around $1500 if that. Many other stores like them as well that offer mattresses in a box. Best to google that and check out reviews.

How about a good mattress for someone with lots of back issues? I tried a memory foam mattress but I am a hot sleeper and the foam made me feel like I was overheating. Plus we keep the house kind of cool and it made the foam feel a lot harder than it was in the showroom. I am guessing the foam softens as it heats up.

I hate inner spring mattresses because of the pressure points they hit on my screwed up back. I mostly have used an inner spring with a thin memory foam topper (4") in the past but it just doesn't work for me anymore. Do those Purple mattresses make you hot when you sleep? Do they also give you good support, but not real firm to sleep on? I don't want to feel like I am sleeping in quicksand as I sink down into it or feel like I am sleeping on the floor.

Has anyone ever tried a Casper mattress?

I'm sort of intrigued by what I read about the Casper and the Purple.

I had a waterbed as a kid. I remember being pissed when my parents got rid of it

You can still get them. A few years ago, I went into a hot tub store trying to see if they had a part that would work with a pump I had for our pool (rubber washer) and while in there I saw 3 different waterbeds. I think one was a regular one, one was semi waveless, and the last one was waveless. I thought about giving one a try since the pricing was much better than a lot of mattresses out there. I figured it would at least keep you from getting really hot when you slept.

I never did get one because my wife thinks we should have a mattress for a while before replacing it and she sleeps fine on ours. Our old one was probably 5 or 6 years old still back then. I tend to sleep more on the couch these days. Hurts a lot less on my back than the bed does. I still have to move around a lot on it. My back doesn't like being in the same position for long periods.

Sounds like a lot if good tech's so far. I have nearly unanimously heard that Sleepnumber is bad. So I would avoid that.

Everyone has a different body shape, hence different needs in a mattress. There's a reason why most manufacturers will let you try a mattress for a month or so.

You need to determine your body shape, then find a mattress that will conform to your shape and keep your spine in neutral.

Same for the pillow.....

My last two mattresses have been ordered online, are foam, cost like $6-700, and are fantastic. Anything spent much above and beyond that is simply overmarketed, useless **** targeted at fat, uneducated dopes. It’s the same set who has to ask the general manager at Walgreens to open up the security vault for him to purchase the disposable razors with 9 blades, a kick stand, a Diesel engine, hydraulics, and stainless steel handle.

Tuft & Needle, I believe. Good luck.

I'm limited on mattress knowledge but am happy to share what I know. And what I do know is that the mattress store next to Oxmoor Mall closed recently (within the last 2 years or so) and is now a Navy Recruiting Center. And what that means is that there is one less mattress store in the Greater St Matthews area along the Shelbyville Rd. corridor in Metro...dropping the total number of mattress stores in that area to approximately 73.

Bought the Sapira from Leesa. It's their upgraded model, which is a hybrid(uses springs and foam). Purchased in July and really happy with it so far. Firm but forgiving. Paid around $1,300.
