My limited experience with self propelled mowers has been they become really heavy push mowers after only a few seasons because something breaks in the drivetrain.
I guess your mileage may vary. I don't think I've ever had a drivetrain go out on me, and self-propelled is all I've ever had.

I bought one of those craftsman movers with the Honda engines off craigslist. For 5 years of me knowing nothing about engines it's been fantastic. I have not just used, but abused this thing and it just keeps coming back for more. Started up for me for the first mow yesterday and ran perfectly.

Only issue I've had with it was when I hit a stump and snapped off a part underneath. That set me back like $120 at the mower repair shop but after the guy tuned it up it sounded and ran like new.

Sometimes you can't put a price on having a tool or a machine that just works right every time you need it. Your time and peace of mind have value.

Get yourself an old Toro and mow like a pimp.
