Well that didn't last long. I heard they never even hit in practice. Rumor, but if true I'm good with it.

Would be fantastic bit doubt it will happen. Understand there was too much bad blood between Chip and the school board when he left. But if Chip did take over then - YES Virginia there is a Santa Claus!

Highschool football is almost ALL coaching. The Jimmys and the Joes help but a well coached team can be competitive and win a lot even without a Mike Hughes. There are dips in talent but I can almost guarantee there is talent in New Bern.

When Joe Miller retired as coach of New Hanover they had one decent year before the coaching carousel started. I am ashamed to bring it up but we went like 3 years without a win. Athletes didn’t disappear
- coaching did.

There is an old saying “luck follows speed” but is should be “speed follows coaching”. Want to make a 4.4 guy look slow, fail on scheming and discipline. Don’t make adustments and you will see the 4.4 speed chasing people down from behind.

I put this out before with no response, but a quote I attribute to Jack Holley (2nd hand) High school football is 80% coaching, 10% finding a kicker that can make an extra point every now and then and 10% ?????- I can’t remember the last 10%. If someone does help me out.

New Hanover had some really good teams a few years ago that may have been title contenders had not New Bern been on their run. You’d think I would be enjoying their pain but I am not - I feel for them. We need them back in the eastern mix.

I met a few of the NB guys at K38 in Wilmington before a game several years ago. Cool guys, they just prefered black and red over black and orange.

Good luck with your search.

100% on

Curlings was the man at New Bern. He had an incredible staff too. I'm good with getting those guys back! LOL

I'm not sure we will ever get that kind of coach again due to Craven county's crap pay scale and lack of a touchdown club to subsidize.

I think there is a lot of truth to this statement. At looking and the ups and down of my school (North Davidson), the coaching changes often took what was the same level of talent to completely different levels of success.

I totally agree. I saw all those bad NH teams. They may have been the worse 4A program in the state for a few years and there’s no question they had athletes and good players. I have also seen NB every year since their last title however many times were at the annual scrimmage with Hoggard. NB talent level is down but it is hard to imagine they have dropped as much as they have. The talent level isn’t that low. After NB hammered Hoggard in 2014 I posted how well coached NB was because I didn’t feel they had anything really special outside Hughes. Now Hughes was clearly a man among boys on that field but he single handily beat a good team because the NB staff knew what they had to do to win and they did.
NB is feeling the pressure because they need to get their guy and get him now. With the powerhouse down the road reaping the benefits of a down NB program. I think the east is always better when NB is in the mix.

Whoever the New Coach is, needs to have a plan for engagement of the community and it’s stakeholders. Also, must demand certain things from the Administrators. You can talk about the pay and the Athletes. New Bern has won 3 state championships since 07 and played for 6 since 01. The well is not dry.

Announcement will be made on Friday. I have my speculation but, I do not want to spoil it for this person and their family.
