Compliance, billionaires, blah blah blah. That has nothing to do with getting a takedown.

tom and terry know how to coach. They are elite coaches. Their loyalties could unfortunately be their coaching career demise.

The issue is their approach, as it clearly is not getting through to the wrestlers and they have assistants that can’t carry forward their approach either.

The short term answer is change of assistants, relook at the diet/strength program and overhaul of HWC. Address those things and the situation will get better and you’ll fill all those empty seats last night.

get rid of tom and you guys will be Nebraska football and probably not have the donor support in the aftermath.

They’ve had years to implement the changes you’re talking about, and they never did. At this point, that window has closed.

Comparing Iowa to Nebraska football is absurd and just another weak excuse to keep this circus going. If Beth has a chance to land someone like Dake, Burroughs, Nolf, or Cunningham, you take it immediately and never look back.

Okie St should be a perfect example of what can happen when you turn the page on a regime that had success but was getting stale. New blood, new faces and excitement, recruits coming galore. Okie st might not take down psu right now but I’d bet my left nut on them doing it before Iowa at this point.

The dream for me would be Dake as the next head coach. Idk who he’d bring in as a staff but nolf, kemdawg, and Diakomihalis would be a great staff. I know he was close with Yianni at Cornell and idk what his relationship with Nolf was being the same weight but that staff could get us back in the mix quickly. I’ve loved the brands brothers but it’s time for a change

I like Dake but as a coach he as a lof to learn he chaces more kids away than stay. He is more like the Brands than you guys realize.

Even Rob Koll had to let him go when at Cornell and said Kyle has a lot to learn about coaching.

So maybe we all should just relax on Dake
I was under the impression that Dake left Cornell to go to the nlwc rather than Cornell letting him go.

I’ll play. I mean it’s only a matter of time and that time feels near.

The same names continue to be thrown around with no clear cut agreement among fans. Here’s how I see it:

Dake - as good as DT was, Dake was better. Top 3 collegiate goat. Innovative. Technician. I think the draw for Dake is taking over the rival program to osu and starting a new chapter of Dake vs Taylor. I could see him bring in Cornell and psu guys. Good blend of both styles and implement somewhat of an unorthodox training method.

Burroughs - post-collegiate goat. Personable. Effective communicator. Motivator. Will draw attention by his words and personality, similar to Brands, but in a more likable, embracing, non-intimidating way. Great with the media. Admin will love him. Community will too and connecting with the Bobs of the world - vitally important in today’s NIL world. Probably brings a style more in line with Iowa style. No idea who he brings in as assistants but will make more of a difference on the style we see on the mat. I think the draw for Burroughs is the spotlight at Wrestletown USA where he’ll shine, be the guy that takes down psu and unseat Cael, and rekindle rivalry with DT and be the guy that takes down psu before Taylor does.

Askren - one of the best innovators. Experienced coach and highly effective translating skills, tactics, adjustments to his wrestlers. Kids love him, respond to him, and trust his insight. Good leader of boys but not men IMO. I think he could be wildly successful with a program like WI but doesn’t feel like a good fit for Iowa. Risky. The community and NIL is a big part of the equation and not sure Iowa would embrace him.

Nolf - maybe too young and not ready for a top perennial program but will get there. Same could have been said for Gable in his day. He’s just solid in every aspect you want in a person and Coach. I get not wanting a psu guy but he doesn’t come off as a Cael minion like DT does. Nolf is different. His style is a blend of psu, Iowa, and Askren. He would undoubtedly put a fun product on the mat and like Cael, get his kids to wrestle free and relaxed without the pressure and stress you can tell they ultimately feel under Brands.

Excellent analysis and write up. Nailed it on every guy.

It should also be a perfect example to Tom and Terry on how to handle this. Recognize the time is now and step aside voluntarily so it doesn’t blow up the entire program by forcing current guys to feel the need to pick a side out of loyalty.

John Smith crushed that part of it and it made the transition 10x better for everyone involved.

I think that left nut of yours is pretty safe

What, specifically, do you mean when you say they “know how to coach” or that they are “elite coaches”?

Seems like most of the time people just mean they’re friends with or devotees of Tom and Terry when they say these things. When pressed, they say things like “we’re still the 2nd best program overall if you average our NCAA finishes over the past x years” without factoring that it might not require elite coaching to put Iowa in the top 2-3 because we’re literally WrestleTown, USA.

When there’s only a few Ferraris on the track, don’t you think it’s pretty disingenuous to hang your hat on averaging top 3 placement?

A Ferrari raced a Camry and the Ferrari won. Which car has the better driver? Tough to know.

But when two essentially equal Ferraris race and one of them wins 32-3 at the other Ferrari’s home track, we kinda know. Especially when the winning Ferrari was a Camry until they got the driver.

Coaches get fired when the fan base gets apathetic. Brands is on borrowed time.
This. There is a feeling in the air that this might be it. Very similar to last season with Fran. It’s almost impossible to come back from that. The only thing different about wrestling is they still sell out.

The number of fans who seem to think that this is just how it is and nothing can be done to fix it is insane

The new wrestling facility was supposed to improve everything, including results on the mat.

So much for that; which means a change is needed.

You are correct.
Remember there is a difference between competing and coaching.
The question is if Dake is the answer why was Cornell left in the hands of Grey.

Cornell still getting top recruits might not win it all but they are always in the conversation of top 5 as an IVY League.

If Arnold, Ayala, Ferrari, Kueter were in the Penn State room, would they be wrestling like we saw yesterday? If the answer is no, some kind of change is warranted and I don’t see how anyone can argue otherwise

This is an interesting thought. It never crossed my mind, but you are absolutely right.

If you are looking for a new culture and premium wrestling skills along with getting the best recruits then its Nolf. There is no other wrestler that is emulized more in the usa today then Nolf. Go to any junior tournament and watch who kids are trying to be its Nolf.

If the goal is to beat PSU, why should we have Nolf as our HC when they didn’t see the need for him as 3rd assistant. Gotta think bigger.
Who would you be thinking? Could try Cunningham but I don’t see him leaving. Seems like there’s some questions on Dake as a coach, but I don’t know whether there’s merit to that or not

JB
- He’s arguably the best USA freestyler of all time.
- Very personable, good with media
- Resonates with todays wrestlers
- Hates PSU and has a hunger to win
- Runs his own club similar albeit not at the same size as DT

He might be the last guy out there( whose available) who has the tools and pedigree to get us back in title conversations
