Metcalf would be on my short list. With the money and facilities Iowa has he could get better recruits that we have gotten recently. Add in Spencer, Kemerer, and some guys from outside Iowa City. Kick the tires on Gable Steveson and see it there is any interest. Trent Hidlay is a young talent with a great personality. Ramos would come back to Iowa City I'm sure. The list of possibilities is long.

tom and terry know how to coach. They are elite coaches.
I’m sorry, what evidence do you have of this?

Put another way-if they were bad coaches, how would the team be different from today? Or alternatively, if there was no coaching in the room whatsoever, how would the results be different?

- He’s arguably the best USA freestyler of all time.
- Very personable, good with media
- Resonates with todays wrestlers
- Hates PSU and has a hunger to win
- Runs his own club similar albeit not at the same size as DT

He might be the last guy out there( whose available) who has the tools and pedigree to get us back in title conversations
He certainly wouldn't break the tradition of poor scrambling skills.

It’s unfortunate that history records arguably the greatest wrestler ever to wear a singlet competing for Iowa State. That certainly doesn’t help our cause. Now he is at Penn State getting all of our prized recruits.
Dan Gable is in the stands at Carver.

If the goal is to beat PSU, why should we have Nolf as our HC when they didn’t see the need for him as 3rd assistant. Gotta think bigger.
I don't know if that's totally accurate. Only so many coaching spots available, and Nolf obviously had other plans with Athletes Ocean in TX. That gives him valuable coaching-type experience. And he is an absolute master technician with a monster wrestling IQ. Watching some of his interviews, he will analyze tiny details in matches or matchups that I never even thought about. And he is just a standup sportsman and genuinely likeable guy.

He expressed interest in being a D1 coach recently on Flo. I'd take Nolf in a heartbeat if change is coming. Doesn't have the high-level freestyle accolades, but that doesn't always translate to a good coach. I think he has all the right ingredients to be a fantastic coach.

I am generally an idiot, but if I had to put together a new staff, it would be Askren HC for at least the near term, with Nolf, Kem, Dake, and/or Spencer as assistants, one of whom could rise to be the next HC when the time comes.

They’ve had years to implement the changes you’re talking about, and they never did. At this point, that window has closed.

Comparing Iowa to Nebraska football is absurd and just another weak excuse to keep this circus going. If Beth has a chance to land someone like Dake, Burroughs, Nolf, or Cunningham, you take it immediately and never look back.
Has a chance? Any of these guys would love to be making what Brands does and leading Iowa Wrestling, IMO.

Askren can't even go to his kids wrestling tournament out of fear of contracting something there and dying and you guys think he's an option to be a college coach. Hell, he needs to take special precautions to meet for a session with one of his club kids and you think he can travel all over the country coaching. Come on guys.... throw out realistic names if you're going to do it.

You are taking this personally and you shouldn't be. This is a big move. What moves the program forward and you are focused on that culture sucks yet all the best kids want to go there. Nolf is man enough on his own to bring his own twist to a head coaching job. In my opinion the best overall wrestler i ever watched at psu in terms of scrambling and creativity. The man loves to wrestle and he loves teaching it even more just saying

I actually agree with you on this. Plus Nolf has been a part of the current PSU dynasty and knows the ins and outs of their sucess. Scrambling is a huge problem at Iowa and is what the current landscape has become in college wrestling and Nolf can absolutely fix that in the Iowa room.

3 "must haves" for the next head coach -
1. Strong national name recognition due to recent high level success (last 10 years).
2. Solid freestyle background and dedication to having a strong rtc.
3. Genuinely WANTS the job. We don't need to twist someone's arm or just throw a huge bag of cash at someone who isn't sure they want to be a head coach. This needs to be an "all in" deal bc that's what is going to take to close the gap.

I'm concerned about JB and Dake on #3 and a little on Nolf with #2.

I'd add 4. Willing to accept having an assistant coach with ties to the program, that could be Kemerer, or if a first time head coach wants to bring in Barry Davis as a mentor/asst., just for examples

Maybe just add Will Lewan to the staff to help perfect the current wrestling style.
Need a scrambling expert on staff.

I mentioned that last night and the response is he hasn't proved anything as a coach lol.
He wouldn't be my number one choice but he's a damn good coach. He made Campbell relevent and is doing a great job at Navy, hell they almost beat Lehigh today.

I'm open for anything that puts Jason Nolf as whatever semblance of coach that he says he wants to be for the Hawkeyes. I have the utmost respect for him when it comes to knowing the sport, its applications and change in the modern day evolution, training, culture, etc. Just a downright impressive young man in every regard. I would be over the moon with him in the Hawkeye program.

Your right, why would you want a guy with a stellar career, ties to the state with the best talent and still fairly young. You are definitely better off now, in fact please stay as you are.
So what has he done as a head coach in his 10+ yrs? Do current hs kids even know who he is?

I believe one of your starters and the only one to win was coached by that guy. Check out his past Campbell kids. He did pretty well with a program that started with nothing.

I get it but at the end of the day a coach needs to be able to hire his own assistants regardless of where they wrestled. I personally don't care where they're from as long as they're world class coaches. They'll be Hawkeyes coaching Hawkeyes, that's what matters.

I have struggled a long time about how Tom sounds and what he says when interviewed. Something doesn’t seem genuine or authentic. I don’t get that he believes what he says himself. He no longer has the fire inside him that he once had.

Okie St should be a perfect example of what can happen when you turn the page on a regime that had success but was getting stale. New blood, new faces and excitement, recruits coming galore. Okie st might not take down psu right now but I’d bet my left nut on them doing it before Iowa at this point.
Legendary coach John Smith had his hand-picked successor lined up, but as soon as DT got upset at OTT trials their donors and admin said it's now or never to land this guy...and they did it. They saw the writing on the wall and made a tough choice while we sat back and watched it happen while throwing more money at transfers in hopes of covering up more recruiting deficiencies.

I think it’s about 90-10, but there are some loud voices in the 10 group.
Brands' aren't the best staff in the state. I don't understand why Schwab is not considered more here. Give him more money for NIL deals and he develops talent from within and see what happens. To me, this is so obvious. The big names aren't coming to Iowa. No Dake, Burroughs, or Nolf.
