I’ll give him a chance. Got to be honest, I was hoping for someone who had proven success as a DC at a P4 school

I remember 22-23 years ago being on this board and bitching about this no-name LB coach from the Packers we just hired to be DC. He had never even been a DC!!! That turned out Ok.

Granted I trust Franks football mind over Matt. I don’t trust Matt with much of anything. But Have to hope for the best.

Hoping he hired a guy who he believes can lead the defense and not a guy he believes he can lead to lead the defense.

San Diego State played a joke of a schedule of this year, so hard to judge. The best team they played was probably Washington State and they got blown out. Also got blown out by Hawaii. Otherwise they did not give up many points in the rest of their games, but again the competition level was very bad.

Well, yeah…They’re in the Mountain West. Can only play the teams on your schedule.

SDSU was a good, tough team - especially at home - but their identity comes from their head coach, not their DC

pretty underwhelming hire if this is our guy

Unlike the OL coach who I think is a great acquisition

SDSU's defense did improve dramatically this year compared to the year before. Though Aurich was on staff the year before as defensive ends coach. He took over as DC this year and the defense was much better.

Ill say this I had the unfortunate pleasure of betting on a lot of their games. Sdsu won most of their games because of the defense and then their run game would seal it. Take that for what u will.

Is it really a home run hire? I guess I really don’t know. Don’t know much about him. Maybe this as sarcasm?
I like him a lot.

Probably like the Toledo guy better, but Rhule 2 days in a row now went after guys who were statistically dominant at their sides of the ball.

As a Wyoming alum, I watched a fair amount of MWC football. SDSU was a fringe playoff team due to their defense.

Year 2 of their head coach

year 2 is when pretty much all good coaches make a big jump

(Sorry to the Rhule apologists)

Statistically his D at SDSU is very close to what Vince did at Toledo this year. Toledo did not play against any good offenses. Im curious as to how SDSU opponents offenses compare to Toledos.

You would’ve said the same thing about Cignetti…I’ll trust the process until it’s proven inadequate. Like the fact he appears to be an energetic, hungry, young dude. I‘ll reserve judgment.

.

It's Why I laugh when I hear all the Cignetti glazing. I absolutely think he's a great coach NOW. But the same guys glazing him and shitting on what we have would've been absolutely livid had we hired Cignetti. In most cases if you don't know it's best to STFU until you do lol. That's what I'll do here ...

Look at this way, there is no hype or false high expectations that fans can create with this hire. Figure it out guys, no proven big name coach was going to come here.
I’m not sure who people thought we were going to get. I would have liked a guy with P4 experience but that doesn’t guarantee success. Pelini was a big name hire for LSU his second go round and his defense was awful.

At least we can pretend he's a rising star. Butler was a DC over a decade ago and begged for another chance but no one but Rhule would give it to him.
Maybe it’s not Rhule. Maybe it’s us. You know”Nebraska. It’s not for everyone”.

As usual. Spot on. Defense is defense. If he made his unit that much better in the league he played in, he’s probably pretty good.

So what's ur thoughts? Is he any good? I have no clue and won't attempt to act like I do lol

They were a good tough team that ran the **** out of the ball

all stuff his boss set out to do identity wise and pretty much the exact opposite of what we’ve been under Rhule

Hard to judge him on his own and coming into a kind of “something has to give” situation

For those who don’t like the “bend but don’t break” D will love this guy. What I have read is he is very aggressive with blitzing and it is high risk and all in type D. Reminds me of a former D coordinator named Kevin Cosgrove. He just would blitz relentlessly but if you guessed right you burned him badly.

Where are those who thought we needed someone with B1G or equal experience. He has one year as a DC and not even close to B1G level teams. Could be an interesting year. Hope for the best.

So u really can't say because you don't necessarily think it was HIM that deserves the credit for SDSU?

Curious what you thought about the Tony White hire initially also?

Tony always made sure the run was covered and the DBs occasionally got toasted. The DBs will be better next year than what Tony had. I think NU’s corner play should be really solid. Guthrie and Hartzog are returning starters.

Correct.

I didn’t know much about white so I didn’t post an opinion. Was def sad to see Rhule run him out of town, though.

I like his trajectory and track record at his prior stops altho it's a relative small sample. He's improved the defense at each stop, sometimes dramatically.

While at Nebraska, Cosgrove’s defense broke many times a game. I wish you hadn’t compared the new man to him. Now I have a sinking feeling. Sometimes I still wonder if Callahan had gone a different direction at DC how things might have gone for him here.

Maybe the new guy can bring a LB who rocks volleyball shorts.

I don't know what to think about this hire other than Rhule wanted someone to come in quickly and coach up the defense for the bowl game and give the young players some reps. The bowl game will tell us a lot about these hires.

Oklahoma.

Company I work for donates quite a bit to Wyoming's energy program so we end up with tickets to a decent number of their games and zip over on the company jet
Those landings can be harrowing
