Being rumored on X that this is the guy. No idea if true. If true , going with an ECU coach feels like a bit of a lazy hire. I’m sure he’d be an improvement over Shula.

It would be a good hire. If he is not here he will be somewhere else besides ECU next year. We need to make a move quick. He won't be available much longer.

Bio looks ok. Maybe the best we could get. I'm sure he's an upgrade. Going with coach from ECU doesn't give the feel that we looked far and wide.

For those saying he's a good get... Why do you think this? What's his resume? Body of work?
This is going to be a big undertaking, rebuild, install.
I'm hoping we hire someone with experience taking a joke of an offense and turning it into something that works. And doing it on their own, not under an "offensive minded head coach" because let's be honest, we don't have that.
We should expect a top level OC, no different than GA or FL would.

He'll probably only be here a year. Like Beamer.

He runs a Briles style offense so I definitely like that. Multiple sets , inventive running game, and vertical passing game. We could definitely do worse.
Why go for a guy imitating a system, why not just go for the real thing? Kendal Briles is over at TCU, same place we stole our AD from. Donati has experience with him having hired him, his offense is one of the top tier offenses in the majority of categories across the nation. Offer him a few million and convince him that Beamer will let him run the show 100%.

His results as OC.

If it is him, this is a big change of direction for Beamer, going from defensive-oriented to offensive-oriented. I'm sure his initial inclination was to copy his old man and stress defense first. Remember Frank had Bud Foster, thus was more defense-oriented. But with next season being "produce or be gone" for Shane, I think he felt he had to change. That's just a guess on my part. I hope it works.

Baker's offenses are "pass first". One might think that would put our own defense at a disadvantage because of the tendency for the offense to not run down the clock, stay on the field for a good bit of time, I would point out that East Carolina's defense ranks 51st in the nation, which is good. Thus, this can work.

What’s -anyone’s- body of work? What have you done for me lately most likely. Anyone can be nit picked, and someone ‘better’ in the eyes of the beholder is always available, but maybe not gettable realistically. If you do manage to get a diamond, he gets snatched quickly re Brad Scott’s early years.

This guys ‘resume’:
10in total offense
31st in scoring offense
20th in 3rd down conversion
16th in passing offense
47th in rushing offense

Better than dead last in every category.

Hell if you want to go that route, papa Briles just got back into college football.

I'm not putting the guy down, I'm looking for a quality discussion on why he might or might not fit.
Your follow up statistics are good points.

Recruiting ''SEC Level players'' hasn't worked very well in a typical SEC offense at SC.
Something different might surprise you and others.
They questioned Steve Spurrier's fun and gun as well until they didn't.

Good we need to move quickly and lock someone in
I guess I'm ok with it (as if it matters what I think). I was initially a bit blah since he's just from ECU, so it doesn't give the impression that we stretched our search very far, but maybe we just got lucky that a good one is just up the road.

If he turned down a HC offer from UAB, do you think he would entertain a OC position here? Seems like that would be a ton of risk on his part.
Not arguing with you - just throwing this out there for consideration....

The way you handle this situation of "no one any good would want to come here while Beamer is on the hot-seat" - talk....

Probably correct. How do you fix it? You go after a "tweener" that you think would make a good HC and in private, quietly assure them that should Beamer fail, they will be the next HC. Hell, you could even put it in writing with a non-disclosure agreement. I know "trust" is a big issue so put it in writing with the stipulation that anything made public about the "deal" would make it null and void. Also, throw in a boat load of money. Problem solved.

2 birds, one stone. That's how I would do it. Probably illegal. Lol.

Using Lane Kiffin as a comparison seems like folly.

I dont think he was really comparing anything to Kiffin. I read hus post as meaning we don't know if a team that looked good this year, may look horrible next year with all the roster changes.

Teams are much more fluid now, and hard to judge prior to portal season.

Treachery is not exactly a good working relationship; no way that could be kept on the down low.

But one has to give Kiffen credit for working the portal, and not just offensive players.

I know this is a little off topic, but Shane initially did better with the portal than current. We sent some good players to the NFL last season.

The upside is this can be turned around more quickly than pre-portal/NIL days.

'Twould be our luck that Golding jumps in and hires Baker back to Ole Miss as OC and they light it up next year and Beamer promotes Furrey while White takes the Coastal job and Beamer promotes Collins.

Either him or the Bell kid at Pittsburgh. Both would be great OC hires. Would finally put me at ease that the HC has hired a competent, relevant OC after jumping up and down since 2021. If you don't hire a guy in that vein of offense, you can't be competitive present day.
