The academic effects upon the individual student due to transferring can be highly negative. Absent great uniformity in the curricula of all public schools in the state, placement of transfer students can really be a tricky proposition due to differences in course sequencing/content and subject area instructional models, for example. Such distinctions become magnified in switches between public and private and even between the latter.

They should of made it legal to transfer midseason to complete the chaos that will ensue.

Approved by a Senate panel ≠ state law.

Imagine if we had state lawmakers making these types of comments:
Lawmakers pushing the measure say it rightly gives parents more say in their children's educations and allows parents who cannot move more school options for their kids.

Well I am guessing the better schools will be "full" for the non athletes who apply.

Understood, but it might be a good thing if kids can escape their failing local school to access better opportunity.

My first thought would be we would have a bunch of private schools closing. Parents would send their kids to good public schools and save on the tuition. Also athletes could be recruited like privates and this would also devastate the private enrollment.

I would say over half the parents in Mt. Greenwood would send their kids to public schools in the suburbs if something like this was ever passed in Illinois.

The reverse commute for the entire city would be overwhelming.

How far out would they go, considering: 1.some nearby suburbs might not be all that demographically and 2. for many it may pull them way past a tolerable distance from the station. Lyons, Lemont, Sandburg or would they hit the LWs and DuPage?

Think about it before making a statement like that. Where in the suburbs would all those MG kids go? Ike? Richards? Oak Lawn? Hillcrest? Stagg? Reavis? Bremen? Doubtful. Or do you think they would all just waltz right into Sandburg or LWE and be welcomed with open arms? Doubly doubtful. I do believe the stipulation was that there had to be room in the school for the kids. Full schools would not have to accept more than they can handle. MG Parents wouldn't be the only ones looking to get their kids into a better school in the burbs. Hell, I guarantee you would find kids from the burbs, not just MG or other parts of the city, looking for better opportunities.

At least this would stop all of the complaining about Chicago Phillips "transfers" and all the public/private debate.

Those kids would be welcomed with open arms into all those schools mentioned except LWE and Sandburg. If you are a stud athlete, there will always be room to be found.

All this law will do is more racially segregate a school system that is currently greatly segregated.

Yes those largely SSC schools would no doubt welcome an influx of Cajetan and Christina alums, but I have a feeling those schools are not Lilly enough for the likes of some MGites, perhaps not b/c of blacks but perhaps significant hispanic and arab populations.
