Would not surprise me to see East and the Bears play in the western regional final. I think both teams will be that good and I do follow this conference and these two teams close and have for several years. Talent level on both teams to play very deep In the playoffs. I look for a very big year out of gosnell, boaz, smith, Edwards and ray from east , should be the best team out of pilot mtn since the Griggs era , imho . Bears are loaded at the skill positions. New qb will have weapons all over the field. Time will tell. But there is a lot of hype behind both this year. Time will tell .

East Surry & Mount Airy will both be very good. East Surry will have a new look but it should be a good look and not predictable as they have been. Mount Airy will have the stud that can take a game over offensively or defensively. How are numbers at Mount Airy? This is the most East has had consistently at workouts in a long time, and the kids are really buying in and excited, it’s a new era. Has anyone heard anything on North Stokes?

I truly hope for the kids and the school that N. Stokes can field a team, someone else posted earlier they thought their numbers were not good.

My concern about Mount Airy is how they will transition from one good coach to another. I think they will be really good and will make a decent playoff run. MA should win the conference.

East Surry also had a coaching change so I don't know what will happen this year. It's hard to replace a coaching legend and it's even worse when parents whine and got the legend fired.

South Stokes, WSP, and Bishop McGuinness will be fighting for 3rd. None of these teams will pose a threat come playoff time.

North Stokes just doesn't have the bodies or the commitment to the football program. A few years ago they forfeited some games so let's see what happens this year.

Mt. Airy will be very talented. Coach Atkins, while an option coach, is not afraid to air the ball out. And with Greene I know he and his staff will find creative ways to get him the ball. My Airy lost their QB and heard through the grapevine they lost their other stud receiver, #22, to transfer. Will certainly be an interesting summer and season start for the Bears.

East Surry returns a lot as well, along with a new coach. Same bot as MA minus the 4* receiver.

Numbers are good In the granite city, lots of excitement surrounding new coach, added new offensive coordinator as well. From what I understand he is good at getting kids out of the hallways and on the field. Numbers have been good in the weight room , averaging between 17 to 23 or so in the weight room consistently. Back field will be special, Added transfer who I look to be an immediate playmaker in the slot and out of the backfield, I look for him to have a huge year . , lost rosseir to transfer. We all know what they have out wide. I look for Greene to get a lot more touches this year. Talent is there , coaching staff intact , gonna be fun watching a new look and watching the players and coaching staff gel. Should be nasty late November. Looking forward to watching the cards as well. I look forward watching them as this there best team since the Griggs era. Rumor has it the cards will be in the spread , much different look from the diamont era

Thunderstruck, I’m hearing he came from Wilkes central , but was the offensive coordinator at Shelby Crest back when they were winning state championships . Just seen where they had another opening, assuming this is where Wilmoth left. Most of staff is intact, only two departures are wilmoth to east Wilkes and Mitch Martin. Strong staff with a lot of talent, looks to be the makings of something special

The Compton guy that was the girls bball coach at Central? I think he was from Shelby and I heard he had resigned at Central.

I think he resigned to move to a new location because his wife got a job somewhere else, could it be MA?

MA has a better program hands down to WC..If all the athletes at WC would get out of the hallways and on the field..then it would be a totally different story.

I do still believe that EW will give ES fits on opening day. Jk kind of left some things on the table at the end of the season..and pretty much didn't coach up and lost all the motivation that he had gained during the season...hence the team went from 9-0 to 9-3..and the only team that was truly better than them was Wilkes Central out of those last 3 losses.

I agree Illuminati...it's crazy how Starmount isn't in that spot anymore...who would've thought that would ever happen!!

I don’t understand with the talent East Wilkes and Wilkes Central have had, they’ve only seen recent success. Granted I’veonly been in the area for a handful of years - it seems like both those schools should both be some of the areas best year after year.

EW always had the tendency to underachieve..until their most recent successes under Jk. ....Grissom led Elkin teams constantly outcoached and outplayed Ew even when EW had superior athletes..and Starmount was simply Starmount and was head and shoulders above everyone in the area in small ball for years.

Gonna be an interesting year to say the least , I hear Compton was brought in cause of his experience with the spread. Haven’t heard nothing but great things about him. Bears are loaded with skill this year. Gonna be fun following the cards of pilot to. They have the athletes to make a lot of noise. Both teams could roll in to Wallace Shelton at the end of the year undefeated. It will a must see game imo. Both should run deep in the playoffs. I could see the Bears playing in the ship again with what they have. Time will tell. 6 weeks out and can’t wait. What’s the word coming out of everybody’s 7 on 7’s . How’s everyone looking so far?

West Stokes lost to both of them last year as well. There is always a lot of hype coming out of King, but they rarely play to their potential for an entire season.

I here west is gonna be good. Looking forward to seeing the Stanley kid run the ball, transfer from north stokes , set out his sophomore year. I think he has the talent to put up big numbers at west. Little brother was a dominant player last year in middle school. Dad was a very good running back for the bears back in the early 90s

West return the whole backfield. Replacing some defense may be a problem. They had East Surry beat last year and fumbled running out the clock. Looking forward to see the Stanley kid play. Does he play defense?

I wish Mt Airy , West Stokes, North Surry, and East Surry were in the same conference. Both conferences are weak for most sports

1A/2A conferences suck. Elkin, East Wilkes, Alleghany, Starmount, Mount Airy, and East Surry need to be in a conference.

That would be a great conference as far as natural rivalries go, but I don’t know where North Stokes, WSPA, Bishop, and this new charter school in Kernersville would go so the NCHSAA would never let that happen.

North Stokes, South Stokes, Bishop, and Prep. Haven't heard of the new charter school in Kville, but Cornerstone Academy in Greensboro needs a conference, so put them in there.

Cornerstone Academy was the school I was talking about. I imagine that in a few years Millenium Charter Academy will join as well. There is no way the NCHSAA will leave WS Prep and Bishop our of a conference that East Surry & Mount Airy go to.

What’s happened to Starmount? Talk about a fall from grace. How are they looming this season? There’s no way they will stay down for that long.

Starmount’s numbers are not the same as 4 years ago. I could see them finishing as high as 4th or as low as 7th in conference. Great area but not an easy place to win at right now.

Don’t see the MVC 1A/2A changing unless the state forces it. The 1A schools from that conference have been very adamant during the past realignments that they’d rather be in a 1A/2A split with the Wilkes schools than in a straight 1A conference with Mt.Airy and East Surry.

Elkin identifies more with Yadkin & Wilkes Co more so then Surry Co. because they only a few miles from both Yadkin & Wilkes Co. lines and the largest shoppers from those county lines .They probably draw more shoppers from those two counties then Surry Co. If I remember correctly Surry County schools had a vote maybe in the 1990s to make the County one school system and Elkin may have been the only hold out so we have 2 city schools and 3 county schools in Surry Co. If that is not correct someone may remember it different.

I, like many, think MA is the team to beat in the northwest. They have a ton of talent at the skill positions. It’ll be interesting to see how the coaching styles/schemes are implemented with the schools experiencing coaching changes (MA, EW, ES, Starmount). Wilkes Central should still be the team to beat in the MVC but EW and Starmount should make some noise. ES could also have the talent to make a run at MA - they should give them their toughest test during the regular season.
