Anyone know if the new turf will be real grass or another synthetic? Real I hope.

I recall a rumor a couple of years ago they were going to go with the same style synthetic turf used at the Citrus Bowl. No clue if that is true or the plan though.

Teams have gone back to natural grass before, but that was with the original "astro turf" was being used. But lots of schools and rec departments all over the country are changing to the surface being used today. I know 2-3 guys here who are in the business of installing it and they stay busy. Now it has spread over to recruit departments. It looks good regardless of weather and appears to be a good plying surface. Biggest negative is it gets hot.

Seems like some of that heat could be abated. It's caused by the black rubber pellets embedded in it. If they could find a way to make those pellets white or tan or something more akin to sand color it would help immensely.

I like Natural grass, but by the end of the season they look like trash. the middle third becomes a mud pit. Our field used to turn brown before the end of the season when it got cold and the grass went dormant. That was back in the earlier days of Commonwealth Stadium. I don't know what the players prefer to play on or which is ultimately safer. I just hope we don't get that turf that looks shiny on TV.

Rubber pellets are black as most of this is recycled tires. So to move to white/tan pellets is doable but is going to increase costs I am sure....but what advantage does tan pellets have over black pellets?

Black absorbs the heat a lot more. Lighter colors reflect the heat. It might raise costs some, but there is a myriad recycled material used in playgrounds all over that is all sorts of colors. so it's feasible.

I agree on the black rubber chips. I could be wrong on this but think it is recycled tires. I know they use that to resurface tracks.

My only request is that the TINY UK emblem at mid-field be enlarged DRAMATICALLY!!!

It seems like it’s the smallest in all of college football and looks PITIFUL!!!

I would love to see an outline of Kentucky around a UK emblem that went from 45 to 45!!!
Agree it looks ridiculous- I think our field was really showing the pellets not as bad as Paycor but still pretty bad. Not sure about the two tone field every five yards either
I think we are only school in SEC with that look
No doubt we will take the cheapest path

I need some bleach to get that image out of my head.
All fans, including you, will be required to wear this. Resistance is futile.

One of my teammates at UK, who owns the sport field company, is installing it. He installed the first one also.

Believe we’re getting the same turf that’s on the field at the Citrus Bowl. Also, we’re in an area where it’s difficult to have natural grass. To cold for Bermuda to make it through the season and to warm for ryegrass and other cold weather grasses. Good friend of mine is a golf course superintendent and talked about the same thing.

The lighter colors work! When I was at Tulsa, they replaced the field going into my freshman year but with a bit of a twist. It had zero black rubber bits in the field as filler. The entire thing was cork and the teeny tiny silica balls. So the field, in day time, had a dark golden sweeping hue that looked like they had sprinkled gold dust.

Like all turf, it sucks for injuries! Like on cuts, there's no give like on a natural grass field. But it makes you feel like your flying a million miles an hour. But it does one thing incredibly well, and that's keep the temperature down. Cork doesn't absorb heat like black rubber does. When we went to UTEP, my feet like they were melting on the turf there.

I guess it's a duplicate of the current turf, else we would have heard about it being different by now.

You're right! I think you have to ask permission to use a colored field correct? It's been so long, I was much more invested in this knowledge when i was high school LOL.

I can't remember who has it, but someone has a red field and it is so bright it hurts my eyes to watch a game on it.

Eastern Washington! The inferno!

Central Arkansas has an alternating purple and silver field. Eastern Michigan is just GRAY. The entire field. Threw me for a loop when I watched it on TV. I thought color processing on my TV went bad!

Coastal Carolina has the teal field.

It's amazing to me how many high schools are going to turf. I heard it can be anywhere from $500,000 - $1,500,000. Where are these high schools getting that kind of money? I read where around 100 KY schools have turf fields now compared to around 120 that has grass.

I think Boise owns the rights to the smurf turf. They wouldn't just give that up easily. Would have hated to play there, when I still was, if they wearing their all blues.
Here's a cool list of stadiums that have non-traditional field colors.

They should. Money should be allotted for it. those fields at most high schools get used for Soccer and field hockey on top of football, and many have to use their fields for practice as well. They get far more wear than a college field. Schools like Male HS and other public schools have trash fields that are downright dangerous at times, especially in bad weather. When my son was doing marching band competitions he would tell me how bad some of those fields were to march on, much less play sports on. When they came around to doing the state competitions, they would divide it up to host schools with turf fields.

I think Lexington Catholic was one of the first in Kentucky.
