Mark Stoops will hire Cincinnati DB's coach Steve Clinkscale and it could be finalized as early as Tuesday. He is a Youngstown native, Vince Marrow's cousin, and knows Stoops well. He's been a top priority in this search for some time.

Heavy recruiting ties to Detroit, Mich. (particularly Cass Tech) and Pittsburgh/Western PA.

i read was promoted to DC last month? why would he pass up that kind of promotion for a lateral move (positional coaching wise, not conference wise)

Half the coaches from Cincinnati or FSU.
For an SEC team we are loading up on ACC / Big East coaches.

Florida State would finish top 5 in the SEC every year. I would say we are damn lucky to have coaches that came from one of the top programs in the country. Cincy is not an SEC caliber program but they have done well and the coaches we have taken from them fill specific needs that we have. BTW, where did UT get their head coach from?

Now I agree with you that if we could take coaches away from Bama and LSU that would be the better option but......that ain't gonna happen.

I like the hire, no complaints here. If he can pull a few a year out of Detroit and Pittsburgh to go along with our recruiting efforts in Ohio, Florida and Georgia that would be huge. I like that we are starting to expand the foot print. Now we have got to start winning some games!

Hard to believe he'd beat out Harba & Dan-t.

Harbaugh would only be getting the high tier recruits from there. Michigan is a national recruiting power.

Dantonio, we'd have to see about.

This newest hire is a positive for our staff. Mark has done a good job keeping our staff at high level for recruiting and coaching. Yet, this doesn't create a blip on the SEC landscape in terms of winning more than we lose.

Until we get past 5-7 and into bowls does anyone even turn a glance toward Lexington. However, beat Auburn, UT, Texas A&M, Georgia, LSU, Alabama, Ole Miss, Florida, MSU and lately a resurgent Arkansas and we will get a look. Taking down South Carolina, Mizzou and Vanderbilt elicits yawns.

This is what we face building our program. And, this why it will take 6-7 years minimum to reach a level we haven't enjoyed in decades.

Looks like a good addition. The defensive side
needs coaches that can elevate these guys to s higher level. Also I hope having this much experience will help with ingame adjustments.

You can't judge what kind of coach a guy is by where you hired him from. Brian Van Gorder was Richt's first DC and he came from Western Illinois. He may have been Richt's best hire over his 15 years. Then he hired 2 guys from the NFL, Grantham's defenses were awful, and hiring Schottenheimer got a head coach fired who averaged nearly 10 wins a year. So just because he didn't come from a P5 school doesn't mean he can't coach, he just needed the opportunity to coach P5 ball and Stoops is giving that to him.

Flint has the water disaster, not Detroit. The source for Detroit's water is Lake Huron and very high quality. Actually, Flint bought the Lake Huron water from the Detroit system for many years with no issues. The "emergency manager" appointed by the governor, however, ordered the switch to the Flint River (ostensibly to save money but other, more political reasons are coming to light).

Yeah I meant to say Flint originally too. When I quoted him. Too late.

MI talent is way down from years ago. Writing off its top talent & net trying to beat off another good in-state program for those remaining doesn't seem like much of a winning strategy to me. In that scenario, I'd rather go south.

I agree with you, but I don't understand why it's that way. Weather, economy or whatever, it just seems like they don't get the participation in football that schools in the south get. Is it because BB is favored up north?

According to this, he was only making $170K at UC. Seems to be a solid hire. Clinkscale: http://247sports.com/Coach/Steven-Clinkscale-1161

From what I read, Clinkscale was being promoted to DC at Cincy. Gran made $375k at DC there, which is what I would expect he would get in that range. Ansley made $275k as a DB coach, which I expect this would be in the range. Still not sure why he would pass on a coordinator position with more money (if these numbers are right), to stay as a position coach. Maybe he has a longer term goal. Either way, sounds like a good guy to have on staff.

Well you need to consider the programs that heavily recruit Georgia, vs the programs that heavily recruit Michigan.

Michigan is a national recruiter, so that benefits UK recruiting in Michigan. Michigan State recruits Michigan, but they recruit Ohio too, and we get a large wealth of talent from Ohio. The list of schools that recruit Michigan isn't huge, and it allows UK to offer the opportunity to play in the SEC to players up north who normally go unrecruited by other SEC schools due to the wealth of talent in the south.
Meanwhile, every single SEC program recruits Georgia, so we'll very, very rarely get top shelf talent down there. There are a couple of instances, but it's rare, just due to the number of SEC programs that offer players in Georgia.
I would rather take 2nd tier Michigan talent than 5th tier Georgia talent, and I'm not saying to ignore Georgia entirely, that would be silly, but the staff isn't doing that because Buh is recruiting Georgia, and the DMV. I'm just saying, expand your reach a bit and get the better talent that's available to you, and that might be in Michigan for us.

Use the SEC brand to recruit in places where it isn't commonly seen.

Lots of southern migration in light of heavy manufacturing downturn and automation.

I think this is pretty hard to determine. Michigan in 2016 had just 9 guys that were 4 or 5 star talent (according to rankings). On the other hand, Georgia had 33. 2015 was an even bigger margin as Michigan had just 5 recruits that were 4 star + talent while Georgia had 34. In 2014 Michigan had 4 while Georgia had 30.

I don't know what you really consider each tier, but UK recruiting Georgia probably has a better shot at one of 30+ 4 star recruits than it does 1 of 5. Further, UK probably has a better chance at landing one of the 45 remaining 3 star recruits from Georgia compared to the remaining 15-30 from Michigan.

It looks to me like the strategy may be to try to be the Northern Most SEC school. Drag guys from the north to the south instead of vice versa.

If it helps you get into Cass Tech it's worth a shot.

Stoops wants position coaches that are on a coordinator path. This fits that desire. Looks like a really positive get.
