Stoops wants position coaches that are on a coordinator path. This fits that desire. Looks like a really positive get.

Absolutely. 4 of the 5 defensive coaches on the staff (Stoops included) have held defensive coordinator positions previously. Knowledge is power. Use it.

I thought that he might be a serious target, but I figured that since he was an Ohio guy, with no (or limited) southern recruiting ties, that the staff might go in another direction. The obviously have Ohio well covered, after all. However, after finding out how well the MI & western PA recruits like him, he sounds like a home run hire. Glad to have him on board.

That is extremely impressive! Definitely have the the X's & O's well covered.

Also, he adds another former Special Teams Coordinator to the staff. It looks like all 3 phases (O, D & ST) have both been upgraded in the X's & O's department & in the recruiting department as well. That also is extremely impressive!!

Well you need to consider the programs that heavily recruit Georgia, vs the programs that heavily recruit Michigan.

Michigan is a national recruiter, so that benefits UK recruiting in Michigan. Michigan State recruits Michigan, but they recruit Ohio too, and we get a large wealth of talent from Ohio. The list of schools that recruit Michigan isn't huge, and it allows UK to offer the opportunity to play in the SEC to players up north who normally go unrecruited by other SEC schools due to the wealth of talent in the south.
Meanwhile, every single SEC program recruits Georgia, so we'll very, very rarely get top shelf talent down there. There are a couple of instances, but it's rare, just due to the number of SEC programs that offer players in Georgia.
I would rather take 2nd tier Michigan talent than 5th tier Georgia talent, and I'm not saying to ignore Georgia entirely, that would be silly, but the staff isn't doing that because Buh is recruiting Georgia, and the DMV. I'm just saying, expand your reach a bit and get the better talent that's available to you, and that might be in Michigan for us.

Use the SEC brand to recruit in places where it isn't commonly seen.
You miss the point. There isn't enough talent left over in MI after MI & MSU skim the cream to make it worth much effort. OH is a much different case with just one P5 school, bigger population, greater HS FB emphasis, our HC's deep roots there, and being closer to KY. Also, I don't think the GA talent Stoops has taken is 5th tier there nor do I think that's what he's pursuing today. Net, I'm saying, I don't think greater emphasis on MI is likely to be fruitful/worth the effort.
