It says a lot about Phillips and the NU admin that they were able to get the head coach of the 2x Men's D-I VB Champion to come to NU.

I don't know if it's BTN money, the We Will capital campaign, or for other reasons, but NU seems to be investing across more sports than I can ever remember. I hope the goal is to become the Stanford of the Midwest, and have strong championship-contending teams for both men and women, across the spectrum. Another great step towards it.

Yeah, I mentioned it on the football board, but Jim has really brought in excellent coaches in many sports since he arrived. Women's soccer really stands out, as does field hockey. We struggled mightily before the current coaches. Women's basketball is another one where the two previous coaches had driven the programs into the ground and Phillips hired the right person to resurrect it. So there's a lot of precedent for Phillips identifying the best coach for a women's program at NU and remaking it.

I read somewhere else that 5 coaches have turned over in the past year. That's quite a makeover; 20%, I would guess?

Our last AD became President of the Pack. I wonder where Phillips will end up if he ever leaves? Would certainly leave the athletic department in better shape than Murphy did.

And Murphy did a pretty good job so improving off of that is an accomplishment

Big Ten Commissioner or even NCAA President. He's held in very high regard.

Well... I guess, but I feel Murphy bringing in Beth Combs was such a terrible move that it makes me wonder if he got lucky with lacrosse and football. Some people (Feli Monosyllabic) would say that Murphy was lazy in promoting Fitzgerald. Women's soccer was left to languish, too, and eventually suffered a hazing scandal.

If men's basketball makes the NCAA tourney and if baseball does the same in the next decade, my god, Jim Phillips deserves all of our worship.

I guess I thought he had been here longer than he was and had been involved in a couple other hires. But since he was only here from 2003-07, he was not involved in many of the more important hires like Walker and BC.

Yeah, his hiring record was mixed and he probably should have fired some coaches that he didn't. He seemed to employ more of a "stay the course unless the wheels completely fall off" management style than Phillips, who is very competitive and wants results.
