Wonder if the OU transfer or the kid another poster posted about enrolling in Jan are 2 of the 17 our coaches have evaluated? If they have looked at those two QBs and have settled on liking this guy better then he must be pretty good.

I like this Johnson kid, hope his grades are in order. It's great the new guys are shaking the bushes for QB prospects. To be realistic, Johnson is the probably the top prospect on their QB board who has shown mutual interest in UK. There are probably other QBs they might like better who just don't have the same level of interest in UK. All that being said, if the coaching staff likes this young man, that's good enough for me. I will trust their judgment and experience in evaluating talent until they give me reasons not to.

I'm not sure Johnson is a true duel threat QB. He looks like he throws pretty well and runs OK. Guys like Dobbs and Jackson are run first guys who can throw a little. Johnson looks like a throw first guy who can run a little. Like I said, if he can help UK win I'm all in.

ZOMGGZ I KNO RITE?!!!?! HE NEED 2 RUN 4.17 FORTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously though, he does look faster than 4.78 (which is listed on his Hudl). He looks faster than Towles, who was fast enough. Towles just didn't have scrambling instincts it seems. Johnson looks pretty calm in the pocket, and he can take off quick enough without sacrificing form and footwork.
Let's be fair and honest here...4.8 for a guy 6.3 195 is slow especially in the sec

It is, but I suppose it's a moot point. Seen earlier today that JRow said in a HoB post that he runs around a 4.5

I figured he looked faster than 4.78, guess I was right.

How many coaches would be satisfied with that slim cast? Barker has potential, but is still learning and has not yet consistently played to that potential, not close. Hoak is a true frosh. Mattingly is a walk on whose rep has grown dramatically with some fans since Phillips departed, but ... Really?

2 scholly QBs is a recipe for current and future disaster.
CC...ck out the Stats of the walk-on rs sophomore at wsu this year...impressive

At UK, we better have coaches who can see the 4 star potential in a player rated 2 stars. Real evaluation is required to grab good players who are overlooked by others. Either you trust our new coaches or you do not.
Caveman...so far I haven't seen anything pleasing to the eye, have you? I will be at EVERY game UK plays next year, but I'm now in a "missouri" mode...

17 sounds like a big number but there are a bunch of QBs out there, both HS and JUCO, who could be available. Article also mentioned they may have looked at QBs committed elsewhere. One would think they at least inquired about Austin Kendall since his brother WAS a UK walk-on...

IIRC he left a while back during the season.

This, a true dual threat QB is going to have a more balanced passing/rushing stat sheet. Though Johnson's stats indicate he is a viable threat because all of his games show positive yardage rushing even after the sacks are factored in. Just not real huge rushing numbers. So I like to think he will be a solid backup that will push Barker and also be a situational type player maybe in a wildcat formation where you have a true passing threat out of it.

There are some legitimate concerns raised here, but wouldn't you think that our new OC and QB coach have thought about them also, and they think he is about the best we can do at this point IF he is the one they bring in?

And for Christ sake, if he gets here and is trying hard and doing his best and still isn't pulling all the games out of the fire for us I for one would appreciate it if you wouldn't act like he stole your lunch money for the last 20 years.
No doubt, our new coaches have thought it over. Justin Rowland says they looked at 17 quarterbacks and picked Johnson. What we don't know is, who were the other 16? At this point, most quarterbacks are already committed, or leaning somewhere else. Apparently, Cincinnati wasn't in on any high profile quarterbacks either. So we know they like Johnson best, but we don't know who else is available. Johnson has offers from Hawaii, Eastern Michigan, Arkansas State, Lamar, Morgan State. I don't care about stars, especially for a juco. I remember another juco named Steve Johnson who also didn't have a big rep, and he plays in the NFL now. But the offer sheet means something. So signing Johnson would not change the fact that Stoops and Gran are depending on Drew Barker. Everything we know about Barker's background and offer sheet coming out of high school still says he has more SEC upside than Johnson. How long might it take Barker to reach his potential? He was awful in November, so he probably won't become a world beater overnight. Can Drew stay healthy playing behind Kentucky's offensive line? I figure they want Steve Johnson for injury insurance and a facsimile of competition. But to be fair to Johnson, Randall Cobb was listed with a 4.8 40 time coming out of high school. There is sprint speed, and there is football speed. For all we know, Johnson could have been timed inaccurately. I figure Gran and Stoops will sink or swim at Kentucky on the basis of decisions like this. So if Gran wants Johnson, I will wait and see how it works out.

I kind of figured it would turn out that way after Austin didn't choose us. I bet Ryan would've gotten a scholly if Austin picked us.

Perfectly reasonable that Hinshaw has "evaluated" 17 QBs. I'm sure he was doing that all year at Cincy. Despite his numbers, Johnson is not on anyones "Top Juco" lists, at least that I could find. Digging this deep for a QB suggests that they want another QB for insurance purposes if nothing else. For that matter, if they can get involved with any done and 1 guys it would not surprise me if they do so. Heck, CBP recruited about 19 QBs to start off his second run at UofL and I think he inherited a bit stronger QB roster than does Hinshaw.

Given the fact that Barker is still very much an unproven commodity the QB situation at UK is downright scary. Personally, I'm inclined to think this late in the year QB scramble is due almost exclusively to Phillips' unexpected transfer leaving I believe only 2 scholarship QBs on the roster for 2016. And 1 of those guys is a true FR.

Peace

Johnsons quote about having a good arm and being a pocket passer along with being able to run it tell me he's not a true read option QB.
Nothing wrong with that, let's just consider him a good option for now.

Just for reference, a 4.78 40 puts him exactly in the middle of the 13 QB's invited to the NFL combine. This is not a bad speed (if accurate) for a throw first dual threat QB. Only 3 QB's ran in the 4.5's, Marcus Mariota at 4.52 (the fastest), Nick Marshall, and Blake Sims. Johnson looks more than fast enough to be a threat. He looks to have a little wiggle as well.

Your "19 QBs estimate might be a little low, but it does illustrate that a state University does operate under a different set of rules than a city college.

The QB for a few Super Bowl winners lately is supposed to have a 5.2 forty.

But then I don't think anyone has accused him of being a dual threat QB.

Doesn't Ohio State have a q-back that is leaving? Cardale Jones I think...What is the story with him?

If Johnson is as good as his numbers say then he isn't coming to sit behind a qb who hasn't proven anything. He's coming to play from day one.

Sure, but not on this one given the limited options they've been dealt.
