Over time I'm becoming more and more amazed that so many people waste so much time on political stuff, left, right or center. I had cable for years and consumed CNN, MSNBC and Fox News. Then I got sick of the cable company and got rid of cable and guess what? I didn't miss those channels.
Now during football season I get Sling TV, which has ESPN and ESPN2 and also CNN (but no MSNBC or Fox News). And so when I had Sling TV this pas fall I watched CNN. As you watch it over time you can feel yourself getting more and more sucked in. But if you pay close attention you notice that what you're getting isn't really that useful.
It comes down to a combination of two things. First of all, in terms of media and entertainment and news, etc, we have basically a limitless amount of content. Secondly, the people producing all the content are constantly trying to get you to consume more and more of it. When you put these together you can easily end up spending more and more time consuming media that is less and less important.
This doesn't apply only to political media. I love watching the NFL and playing fantasy football. Because the NFL is so popular there is a ton of media around it. And I find myself getting more and more sucked in. And then eventually it dawns on me, why am I reading 50 pieces about things like whether the Denver Broncos left guard will retire or instead come back for another season? It easily devolves into pointless minutiae.
Meanwhile, since we have so much information at our disposal these days there are a thousand other interesting subject areas that you don't even scratch the surface of. And it's all because the people selling you the contents sucks you into their little niche and you spend all your time there. If you really do just like that little niche then fine but I think much more often it's a case of people unconsciously getting sucked in.
